Sridevi repeats role, look and success of Devatha (1982) in Tohfa (1984)

Sridevi always said it was boring to re-do movies in other languages as the spontaneity was lost (she famously said the same of Sadma!) but she went through the rigmarole for the sake of the producer. Ah. Dedication. 

Fortunately for her, many of the yarns spun into box-office gold - hence the "Madras factory" featuring Jeetendra Sridevi/Jaya Prada/Rekha/Bhanupriya kept churning... until the movies stopped making returns. Though producers lamented in print there was no "forula" for box-office success, there in fact was. Regional films box-office was indicative of how a film would do nationally. Casting changed according to who was popular when and where. Sridevi was universally liked - a capable actress and a notable beauty.
