Sridevi's comedy in Roop Ki Rani Choron Ka Raja (1993): Anil Kapoor and Sridevi's comedic timing

As a typical pot boiler action, comedy, caper, drama, musical (good lord the movie had a bit of everything didn't it?), in theory, Roop Ki Rani Choron Ka Raja [RKRCKR] had everything going for it.

Except coherence. Too much money spent on everything (costumes! locations!! action! the train robbery scene!) but a logical narrative.

Roop Ki Rani Choron Ka Raja was famous in the early 1990s as the most expensive Hindi film made in the history of Bollywood - at the time. The movie had the most lavish premiere in  memory - and yet, as Anil Kapoor famously said in print, even on opening night, they knew, they had a clunker in their hands.

It was the lackluster direction, a meandering script, an all over-the-place screenplay that finally sealed its fate and the film. One of the most anticipated epics of its time, tumbled so badly, it became one of the biggest flops of all-time in the history of Bollywood.

And the reviews that followed... Yikes! India Today, The Times of India and other publications killed the film upon arrival - but saved the only kind words for the leading lady, the awesome Sridevi.

Sridevi is the best part of the film, with her comic antics and rockin' dance numbers, she got all the praise. Especially in an amazing comic scene where she performs as a loud and crying Tamilian accusing the leading man of stealing her necklace. She performs with an ease and such comedic brilliance that's... quite frankly, by now, expected of her! She simply shines.

See the film just for this awesome part, where Sridevi acts as the 'dukhiyari Madrasi'. It's too, too good.
