After the utter failure of Madame Tussauds Singapore to try and recreate the likeness of Sridevi, an unveiling that was met by stunned silence by the family and utter dismay by most Sridevi fans (above ad hoc poll created on social media), we were reminded by fans that there's an even worse Sridevi-inspired caricature/marionette/doll/what-dafaq-attempt at creating her likeness. That other infamy goes to Adlabs Imagica, the theme park situated in Khopoli where you can find the Mr India ride - where you'll find the most mind-boggling-awful figurine of what-supposed-to-be Sridevi.
To share in the ignominy, an Anil Kapoor likeness right next to that that's equally cringe-worthy.
One of the kinder twitterati tried to pacify the disappointed fans by writing, well, its harder to recreate the likeness of someone when the actor is no more. Well, that excuse doesn't hold water. Marilyn Monroe died decades ago and her handcrafted doppelganger looks fabulously realistic. As with many celebrities and icons who died eras before the museum came to being, there are many remarkable efforts out there created by gifted artisans.
Most western actors, when they've appeared on The Graham Norton show for example, have said they'd rather not have their likeness/figurines/statues done while they are alive - or long gone. Nine times out of ten, there's an eerie creepiness or risible result. Nothing lives up to the reality of a famed star.
Of course we understand the love fans have for their favourite celebrities and icons but, truth-be-told, there needs to be a clear demarcation between kind fandom and volatile fanaticism.
How about we just leave Sridevi alone in peace, keep her in fond memory for eternity?!
