Published in the summer of 1988, these stills of Sridevi, shot by her favourite photographer Rakesh Shreshta, are most remembered for their cameo appearance in Chandni (released a year later in Sept 1989).
Originally published in the now defunct Star & Style, June 17-30 edition, the demand for film magazines were so high, 24 editions came out a year! Now, nearly all film magazines are circling the drain.
The internet - access to free information and images of stars led by Instagram - has killed off more film magazines and tabloids than any threat by star and celebrity who went after the press accusing them of 'yellow journalism.'
Sridevi's FAKE pic trending on Instagram |
While the beast of printed gossip and speculation died, another monster grew - fake news being spread by anonymous hosts on the net. Be it on YouTube, Instagram, or in India, viral images and bytes spread on WhatsApp.
Some stars have gone after fake news spreaders, famously Akshay Kumar and the Bachchans, however as one head gets sliced off, others pop up.
We try to ensure that fake news (and fake pics!) about Sridevi is eradicated or proven false as soon as possible but it's a battle of bot versus bot. In the insane rush for first-to-publish, eyeballs and clickbait, its hard to fight artificial intelligence and natural stupidity on a daily basis.
How does one police the spread of fake news? Hopefully real fans of Sridevi will keep up faith.
