Venkatesh with Sridevi: Just one superhit film together!

While moviegoers often assumed the duo had a long history on screen, Venkatesh and the legendary Sridevi appeared together in just one film! That sole collaboration yielded a landmark of 1990s cinema: Ram Gopal Varma’s 1991 neo-noir-comedy road thriller Kshana Kshanam.

Playing Chandu, an endearing pickpocket thrust into an adventure alongside Sridevi’s naive Satya, Venkatesh created an effortless comic and romantic dynamic on screen. The movie was a massive commercial hit and earned a enduring cult following, making it their undisputed biggest success together.

Despite Sridevi having established her stardom years earlier after starting out as a child prodigy, Venkatesh was actually the older of the two. With Sridevi born three years after Venky, the profound respect Venkatesh held for his co-star became evident following her sudden demise in February 2018.

Paying tribute to her artistry and character, Venkatesh shared: "As her co-star in Kshana Kshanam, every expression of hers still remains etched in my mind. Although she achieved fame and popularity at a very young age, she always remained humble and graceful. Her exemplary career is an inspiration for every newcomer wanting to be a part of the industry."

Though limited to a single feature, their brief pairing remains one of the most vibrant and remembered chapters in Telugu film history.

Have seen the movie several times and Sridevi simply dazzles in the movie.

Venkatesh and Sridevi in Kshana Kshanam

Released on October 9, 1991, Ram Gopal Varma’s Kshana Kshanam arrived as a slick, genre-bending breath of fresh air. Though it opened to a modest box office response, strong word-of-mouth catapulted the film into a certified commercial hit within weeks of its run, cementing its status as a cult classic of South Indian cinema.

At the time of filming in 1990–1991, the principal cast brought a youthful dynamic to the screen. Sridevi was around 27 years old, already at the zenith of her stardom across Indian cinema. Her co-star Venkatesh Daggubati was roughly 30, bringing an effortless, grounded charm, while Paresh Rawal, who played the iconic antagonist Nayyar, was in his mid-30s.

What makes Kshana Kshanam stand out in film history is how it dismantled traditional tropes for both action capers and leading ladies. Sridevi’s character, Satya, is not a passive damsel in distress nor an untouchable glamour queen. She is a bewildered, everyday middle-class woman unexpectedly swept into a high-stakes robbery plot. Sridevi leaned into pure physical comedy, immaculate facial expressions, and neurotic vulnerability, turning panic into comedic gold. Her performance won her the Filmfare Award for Best Actress - Telugu and the Nandi Special Jury Award. Winning a major acting accolade for a breezy road-caper was almost unheard of in an era dominated by high-pitched melodramas and intense dramatic roles. Sridevi proved that comic timing, nuanced reactions, and lighthearted caper storytelling required as much artistic precision as heavy drama.

Supported by M.M. Keeravani’s memorable soundtrack - most notably the soothing classic "Jaamu Rathiri" - and RGV’s stylised visual direction, Kshana Kshanam remains a forever fan favourite, showing how a superstar could redefine comedy without losing an inch of magic.

Beautiful Sridevi in the Telugu hit Kshana Kshanam

Released on 9 October 1991, the Telugu hit Kshana Kshanam is one of Sridevi's better films.

The movie won five state Nandi Awards, including Best Direction, Best Screenplay, and a Filmfare Award for Best Actress – Telugu to Sridevi. Varma later remade Kshana Kshanam in Hindi as Daud, but opted for Urmila and Sanjay Dutt to lead the film.

A hit in Telugu that gave Sridevi two awards--Filmfare south and Nandi award--for her take as a damsel in distress in this comic caper, Sri looked smashing in several scenes.

Happy Birthday Venkatesh! Telugu Superstar turns 61 today!

Sridevi's Telugu co-star Venkatesh turns 61 today. Happy Birthday to South Indian superstar.

Sridevi and Venkatesh acted in Kshana Kshanam. The movie was a major success and Sridevi went on to win two awards for the film, Filmfare Best Actress Telugu and the Nandi award.

Venky was three years older than Sridevi and the two looked so good together on screen - wonder why they only did one film together when they were such a successful pair and got along so well -

We have rich archive of images of Venkatesh with Sridevi here.

Rarely do comedies reward their stars with Best Actress trophies - but then Sridevi was no ordinary actress. Sridevi picked up a fine collection of awards for her gentle, comedic take as a hapless, if not helpless, girl on the run from the mafia. She's so cute in the film.
