Vinod Khanna and Sridevi: Rare pic from Pathar ke Insan

Vinod Khanna and Sridevi: Rare pic from Pathar ke Insan

A reluctant husband being seduced by the glamorous wife - its a popular Bollywood trope - the original was Main ka karun Raam, Mujhe Budhha Mil Gaya... from Sangam. A glamorously costumed Vyjanthimala trying to seduce her shy husband, played by Raj Kapoor.

Sridevi went on to repeat the trope in not one but two films; first in the middling Ram Avtar, in the song Nigode mardon ka... And then again in Pathar ke Insan, with Chodh chala Raahon Main Kyun...

Similar scenarios played out with comical flare - in over the top costumes, makeup  and feathers!

That's the trouble with formulaic cinema; when one thing succeeds, the industry asks stars to do the same thing again, and again... Think of all the rain songs Sridevi has had to do, the comical numbers, the dancing gypsy on the road, Rekha's endless parade of mujras [I tried to make a comprehensive list of Rekha's dances - a decade later, I still haven't finished the list!], the heroine dancing in the villain's den... Farrrrr too many to list, the industry has run on familiar patterns for far too long - and never seems to learn its lessons that repetition is attrition; it negates the original idea!

Sridevi in Pathar Ke Insan (1990): The blue chiffon sari

Sridevi on the sets of Pathar Ke Insan (1990), working yet another blue-chiffon sari. Sri looked so great in the movie. Pity the film wasn't so great...

The movie was brought up in conversation the other day as Tanisa Mukherjee spoke highly of Sridevi's performance in the movie - a film made by her father Shomu Mukherjee!

BTW the silver jewellery, the blue chiffon sari... its very similar look and styling to Sridevi's iconic Kate nahin katthe song...

Sridevi

Sridevi in Pathar ke Insan. A dreadful mess of a movie. But Sridevi looks glorious in it. Kajol and Tanishaa mentioned how much they loved the movie - but... mostly as their father made the film.

Post Chandni and Chaalbaaz, there were several missteps and wrong film choices... but by the time Sridevi self-corrected, the crown had been passed on.

Sridevi and Vinod Khanna in Pathar Ke Insan (1990)

Sridevi and Vinod Khanna in Pathar Ke Insan (1990)

Released just weeks after the runaway success of Chandni, great expectations were, however, not met when the film opened.

Sridevi and Vinod Khanna in Pathar ke Insan (1991): Gorgeous Sri in the flop film

Released on 15 January 1991, a few months after Chandni (also with Sridevi and Vinod Khanna), there was such high expectation from Pathar ke Insan, but it all came crashing down as the story went a bit wayward as it had as many plots as it did plot holes. Sridevi dances and looks a dream throughout, but nothing could save this from tanking.

Oh well.

In the early years, Sridevi (like other stars) was batting a high range of hits doing a huge number of films, averaging a dozen films a year (in multiple languages). The "hardest working actress" of Indian cinema rarely took a break and she was a methodical, and perhaps over burdened, but she always showed such grace and ease, her exhaustion didn't vocalise into excuses. She rarely missed work. Except when you look for erratic patterns away from the norm... you'll find them; the number of times she's mentioned that she's worked through a fever and ill health (most famously with a fever in Mr.India, in Gumrah, in Chaalbaaz, her fall during Aasman se Gira etc). The fainting spells have been recorded too but observers didn't take note, after all, she was human and fallible, prone to ill-health and fatigue like the rest of us--but her persistence and zealous work ethic was second to none. Note how quickly she returned to work after personal tragedy (her father's passing and later her mother's). When she finally took a proper break from movies, after Judaai, to raise her children, she earned her self-imposed hiatus.

This current absence has been... traumatic. I think several fans have suffered PTSD and its coming out in bat-shit conspiracy theories to lay blame on someone other than fate. Yes, we've read all the allegations and seen the YouTube clips - if the Indian penal code hadn't been so backed up, several people would be facing defamation and libel.

Sridevi's death anniversary coming up in a few days. The gut-punch hasn't healed.

Sridevi, Saeed Jaffrey and Poonam Dhillon on the sets of Pathar ke Insan

Sridevi, Saeed Jaffrey and Poonam Dhillon on the sets of Pathar ke Insan

Today - 8th January - is the birth anniversary of the British-Indian actor Saeed Jaffrey. A wonderful actor equally adept at drama as he was in comedy.

He was brilliant in Shatranj ke Khiladi and there are several British TV shows and films he was great in - but his comedy in Chaalbaaz with Sridevi remains a personal fav.

This still from the (awful) film Pathar ke Insan. Released early in 1990, the movie is studded with late 80s fashion!

Well, at least all three look good here.

Sridevi dancing up a storm in Pathar Ke Insan

Sridevi dancing up a storm in Pathar Ke Insan in 1990.

The famed red costume, a variation on the traditioanl amrapali, was photographed often. Another song and dance routine choreographed by Sridevi's favourite, Saroj Khan.

Sridevi in Pathar Ke Insan (1990)

Such an awful movie that Sridevi looked sooooo good in.

Many have wrongly credited this image and look as that of Garajna  - even we had it credited as such in an earlier post, but since then has been corrected. A keen fan pointed out its a look from Pathar Ke Insan and sent us the exact point when Sridevi wears this dress! Incredible.

There are many online who, when corrected, implode and then explode with expletives. We are happy to be the most accurate page on Sridevi bar none with the aid of avid Sridevi fans  - and fans of accuracy, authenticity, truth without prejudice.

Sridevi's stunning dance in Pathar Ke Insan (1990)

Sridevi's stunning dance in Pathar Ke Insan (1990) Poonam Dhillon acted as Sridevi's sister in the movie - the two stars have appeared in half a dozen films together often as friends, sisters, colleagues...

Sridevi and Vinod Khanna in Pathar Ke Insan (1990)

Directed by Shomu Mukherjee (Kajol's father), there's little to say about the film... apart from Sridevi looked gorgeous in it and her dances in the movie are incredible.

Vinod Khanna and Sridevi: 1989 photoshoot for print

Publicity shots for the film Pathar Ke Insan (1990) - which ended up being a cover shoot for Star & Style in the early 90s.

Looking for clearer scans of this shoot with gorgeous Sridevi and Vinod Khanna.

Sridevi loved this look so much she used the blue salwaar in the photoshoot and in a key scene in Pathar ke Insan.

Sridevi and Jackie Shroff on the sets of Pathar Ke Insan (1990): Sridevi in white: Goddess

Sridevi looking so stunning in white - as usual - on the sets of Pathar Ke Insaan. With her least frequent co-star in the 80s, Jackie Shroff.
