Released with little to no fanfare, Harmesh Malhotra's Heer Ranjha was released on 4 September 1992... according to Wikipedia, but "Released on August 5, 1992" according to Tips (which released the music!). 

Either way, the film was no great shakes that we have to be fastidious about about details. There are a few things that stand out, one or two songs and Sridevi's dances and costumes, the popularity of the film astounds me as it definitely has a cult following - especially for those fond of the fable.

Released on 4 September 1992, 33 years ago, this oft told tale hit the big screen... and almost immediately tanked at the box-office. 

Harmesh Malhotra's lucky box-office streak with Sridevi (he worked with her more than any other actress) ended with this costume drama. Though Nagina was the only blockbuster made by Malhotra, Banjaran was a surprise hit, Nigahein more than recovered its high budget, but nothing could save Heer Ranjha which released at the same time as three other films with the exact same plot!

Released on 8 May 1992, there was no bigger film in the 90s than Khuda Gawah -- a movie meant to be seen ONLY on the BIG screen.  We have so many features and images from the film in the archive here.

The premiere was phenomenal - god bless Lehrein Retro for this clip - but its so odd that there isn't a SINGLE shot of Sridevi at her own film's premiere!!! WHY? What happened. Of course we know she was there - there are dozens of photos (like the two above) -- as Sridevi attended the event with her mother. She was on stage with her co-stars, choreographer Saroj Khan and so on. Perhaps she didn't sign off on the release with Lehrein? If anyone knows, kindly let us know below.

Sridevi and Amitabh Bachchan on the sets of Khuda Gawah (1992). Released on 8 May 1992, there was no bigger movie released that year, if not decade. Everything about it was so grand. 

By the 90s, Sridevi stood tall next to Big B; and she held her own in every scene. The two were so magical in parts of the movie... The smile scene, their reunion, the title song, this dance off... Just the greatest actors and superstars, beyond compare.

Gorgeous cognac eyed Sridevi. Yes, we know they are her lenses, but Sri looks great here.

This gold feather cover shoot and issue - one of the few I don't have but desperately want. This special edition with Sridevi on the cover sold for Rs 18 back in Dec 1992. Now the same edition sells for Rs16,513.78 on ebay! 

Sridevi is the Gold standard in soooo many ways.
