Jaya Prada, Sridevi and Rajesh Khanna on the sets of Maqsad

Jaya Prada, Sridevi and Rajesh Khanna on the sets of Maqsad

Two people Sridevi didn't thoroughly enjoy working with... the mercurial and temperamental former superstar Rajesh Khanna, while clinging on to his fast fading stardom.... and the famously feuding Jaya Prada.

Sridevi just held her own, with her signature grace and tall statuesque diva-dom.

Maqsad: The all-star cast: Sridevi, Rajesh Khanna, Jaya Prada and Jaya Prada

Released on May 4, 1984, Maqsad (The Motive) is an action-drama film directed by K. Bapaiah and produced by D. Rama Naidu (Suresh Productions), Remake of the 1983 Telugu film Mundadugu.

Shot in less than 40 days, out of the Madras movie factory, the remake was an instant hit. Today, it's only remembered for Sridevi and Jaya Prada's epic dance off. While watching Dola re dola re, in Devdas, you don't know who to look at - Aishwarya Rai or Madhuri Dixit; its deja vu for us. While watching the song and dance routine of Naagraja, you don't know who to look at - the learned dancer Jaya Prada, or the naturally gifted Sridevi. Both aced it Jaya Prada's poise and perfection, Sridevi's grace and fluid movements. Sridevi towered over short Jaya, but Jaya Prada's face was flawless back then...

80s superstars line up; Jaya Prada, Jeetendra, Rajesh Khanna and Sridevi

Outside the sets of the hit film Maqsad. A movie with little to speak of other than it is the usual 80s masala potboiler. The only thing worth revisiting is the epic dance off between the famous feuding Telugu superstars, Jaya Prada and Sridevi.

We have a hundred pics from the set in the archive - scroll away.

Rajesh Khanna and Sridevi in Nazrana: Remembering Rajesh Khanna on his birth anniversary today!

Rajesh Khanna and Sridevi in Nazrana.  The on-set pics that were on many tabloid covers in the 1980s!

Remembering the first Indian superstar, Rajesh Khanna, who was born on December 29, 1942, in Amritsar, India!

Sridevi worked with him in four films, ALL were hits. Not sure she enjoyed the experience tho'... he had a famously mercurial temperament. And was always, always late on set, keeping the punctual south Indian superstar... waiting! When she became 'the' top star of her time, she stopped working with him altogether.

Ah but que sera sera. Let's remember Rajesh Khanna for the phenomenon that he was. His successes, the music in his films, his range and variety. Sure he failed on occasion, but we remember the triumphs more, don't we?

Rajesh Khanna spoke well about Sridevi, but not as gushingly as his ex-wife Dimple Kapadia or daughter Twinkle Khanna or son-in-law Akshay Kumar did. All mega fans of Sridevi!

Jaya Prada, Rajesh Khanna and Sridevi

On the sets of Maqsad, Jaya Prada, Rajesh Khanna and Sridevi.

Funnily enough, Sridevi had an ambivalent relationship with both - but it didn't translate on screen.

Sridevi and Rajesh Khanna in Maqsad

Sridevi with Rajesh Khanna in Maqsad. During the making of the film, Sridevi had just turned 20 and Rajesh Khanna was 42! There are some interviews out there where she said she was always unsure of working with Kakaji as his famous temperament was... well, temperamental! It didn't translate too badly on screen as, believe it or not, all their films together were successful at the box-office!

Rajesh Khanna and Sridevi in Masterji (1985)

Rajesh Khanna, 43, and Sridevi, 22, in Masterji (1985).

Social mores have changed irrevocably, back then, Sridevi was lambasted in print for the controversial film with her senior co-star, her outfits, the innuendo and well, especially in Tamil and Telugu magazines, it was deemed unbecoming of their biggest star to shed a sari for success in the foreign soil of Bombay (then!).

In a classic case of nothing succeeds like success, the film (temporarily!) revived the career of flaying Rajesh Khanna as it raked in big bucks, becoming the 12th biggest hit of 1985. Sridevi's career was on a steady incline in the early 80s and no slings and arrows of critics could harpoon her ballooning career.

She did however cease any and every revealing shot after the disapproval of her mother Rajeshwari, the only opinion that mattered to her.

Sridevi's controversial film with Rajesh Khanna; the blockbuster Masterji

Sridevi's controversial film with Rajesh Khanna; the blockbuster Masterji

Remembering Kakaji today - on his death anniversary. By the end, Rajesh Khanna had turned so philosophical about his meteoric rise to superstardom and the tragic Grecian fall to infamy (I mean Jaanleva Black Blood his penultimate film, was just a mere indication of how far he had come down from the zenith of national craze and fame to the nadir of cringe)... Bollywood is not for the meek or the weak. It's a daily battle - we appreciate any actor for their longevity more than their success.

When you see the film now, it's so tame compared to what stars of today wear, but back in 1985, Sridevi received maximum flak for her role in Masterji. So much so, she turned the wheels of her career to another direction; major acting parts, double roles, title roles, above the banner star-vehicles, earning the tag; the biggest female superstar of India. Ever. In a way, she took the constructive criticism on the chin, but had her head held high, never looking back.

Three women and a big baby: Sridevi, Jaya Prada, Padmini Kolhapure with Rajesh Khanna

Three women and a big baby: Sridevi, Jaya Prada, Padmini Kolhapure with Rajesh Khanna on the sets of Naya Kadam

Released on 5 October 1984, today is the 38th anniversary of the hit film.

At some point or another, many actresses have spoken about how temperamental and mercurial Rajesh Khanna was. Hmm.

The tenth biggest hit of 1984.

Rajesh Khanna and Sridevi on the sets of Maqsad (1984): TBT: Throwback Tuesday!

Rajesh Khanna and Sridevi on the sets of Maqsad (1984): TBT: Throwback Tuesday!

Despite their two decade + age gap, they were a powerful duo at the box-office; all their movies were successful. Not particularly liked by the critics, the high octane melodrama of the 1980s, the often direct lifts of Tamil/Telugu hits succeeded across Indian screens. Their legacy lives on.

38 years of Maqsad: Sridevi, Jaya Prada, Rajesh Khanna and Jeetendra's 80s Bollywood hit

38 years of Maqsad: Sridevi, Jaya Prada, Rajesh Khanna and Jeetendra's 80s Bollywood hit

The ONLY thing really memorable about the film is the epic Sridevi and Jaya Prada dance-off. Otherwise, just regular Madras masala movie fare...

TBT: The Cold Turkeys of 1985: Bollywood Box-office Report

The Cold Turkeys
1985

Countless movies bombed during the year leaving no trace behind. Despite media hype that preceded them, and the screaming banners.

Among them, Rajesh Khanna's home spun Alag Alag, Gulshan Rai's much-touted Yudh, Yash Chopra's love story Faasle, K Raghavendra Rao's disastrous Masterji Even the South Indian movie moghuls seemed to have lost their touch - each of their films left the box-office cold. Stone cold.

Shows, if nothing else, that the audiences are no longer fooled by formulae junk.

Notes;

Lol, above excerpt would be relevant even today. Clearly, history repeats itself.

At the time of publication of the article, it didn't look like Masterji was doing well, but in the final tally, Masterji was not a flop - but considered the 12th biggest hit of the year. It was a slow but steady earner for producers.

However, despite its success, Sridevi regretted doing the film and the flak she got for it.

Sridevi's most controversial Hindi film was released 36 years ago: Once Upon a Time in Bollywood: Masterji

Released 36 years ago today, the Rajesh Khanna - Sridevi Hindi film Masterji was a big box office hit (in fact the 12th biggest hit of 1985), but the bad press that Sridevi got for it, changed the course of her career. Sridevi stopped doing roles with revealing outfits, overt sexuality, double entendre dialogues and famously glared at choreographers if they suggested dance steps or movements beyond her comfort zone. She also stopped working with the notoriously moody and mercurial superstar Rajesh Khanna.

Sridevi's naiveite was visible when she expressed genuine shock and surprise at the flak she received by the media - and when the film was released with an "Adult" certificate, Sri, famous for having a large fan base of young people, was stunned. It was one of the few times Sridevi dismissed the film from her long list of box-office hits and never discussed the movie again. She also let her displeasure be known to the producers and makers for the way it was shot, the choreography, the suggestive dances and so on.

Sridevi's no was a firm no, in the past she famously went along to get along. Never creating a scene or obstruction while shooting a film. In a way, it helped Sridevi understand her own power as she set the rules then on, never kowtowing to intimidating producers, directors or co-stars.

Compared to the social mores of today, the film is tame, would barely raise an eye-brow, but back in the mid 1980s, Bollywood was a different minefield; some great films flopped  (Jaag Utha Insaan) while unexpected ones - like this and every film she did with Khanna - rocked the box-office.
