Sridevi and Jeetendra in Jaani Dost (1983)

Sridevi and Jeetendra in Jaani Dost (1983).

Released on 27 May 1983, this film with heavy hitters Dharmendra, Jeetendra, Parveen Babi and newcomer to Bollywood, 20-year-old Sridevi.

By the time of the film's release, Himmatwala had already stormed the screens a few months before, so when Sridevi pops up in her song, the whistles were loud and clear; there's a new cine-queen in town.

Considering the scale and cast of the film, the movie wasn't considered a hit back then, but when you look at the numbers, it just about broke even. As the Telugu version Adavi Simhalu was a hit, the makers were not at a financial loss.

In this blog, I'm noting down box-office results often as it really is "show" "business", movies have to break even at the bare minimum. The economics of movie making is a (faulty) science of its own, and as history has repeatedly proved, its not about looks or talent, but results. You can have a lengthy career as long as audiences turn up at the cinema.

Sridevi with Parveen Babi in Jaani Dost

Born on April 4, Parveen Babi was a 'beauty queen' (if you remember the song?!). Today is her birth anniversary and she's truly an icon of Indian cinema who changed the restricted box that pigeon holed leading ladies in.

She was modern, fearless, wore contemporary fashion, was no damsel in distress, she showed agency, sexual liberation and, female empowerment without standing on a soapbox. Her western-wear and flair was attainable (Zeenat Aman did something similar but Z's body was perfection--impossible to replicate!).

Its hard to believe Sridevi and Parveen Babi crossed paths as they were icons of different eras and Parveen was a decade older, but they worked briefly in one film together, Jaani Dost, paired with Dharmendra and Jeetendra respectively.

While it was common to pit one actress after another (still is!), the two got along famously. Sridevi was just stepping into Bollywood and, tragically, Parveen was stepping out due to mental health issues and self-sabotaging paranoia brought on by her then undiagnosed schizophrenia. Later it came to light all that ailed and failed her, and she died in such tragic circumstances.

But let's remember Parveen Babi as the gorgeous and glamorous icon that she was.

Parveen Babi with Sridevi in Jaani Dost (1983)

Parveen Babi, 29, with Sridevi, 19, in Jaani Dost (1983)

Hindi cinema icons. It was Sridevi's first year of success in Bollywood and Parveen was already a top leading lady. While the media flamed the fires of cat fights among actresses, these two lading ladies were immune to the gossip and got along well. Both spoke kindly of the other, Parveen broke the mold of what a Hindi film heroine was, Sridevi was that rare, raw talent from the South who blazed her own way too.

Both appeared in the multi-star cast big budget melodrama Jaani Dost, Parveen was Dharmendra's co-star and Sridevi was Jeetendra's.

Jeetendra and Sridevi in Jaani Dost (1983): 40th anniversary of a Jeetendra and Sridevi, Dharmendra and Parveen Babi smash

Following the massive success of their first film together, Himmatwala, Sridevi and Jeetendra went on to do Jaani Dost, Justice Chaudhary and Mawaali, all released within months of each other in1983. Directed by the "Manmohan Desai of the South," K. Raghavendra Rao, Sridevi appeared in 24 films made by him in her unparalleled career.

A mass entertainer, Jaani Dost was successful in key centres, despite a tepid response from film reviewers. 40 years on, upon reflection, well, the movie has a few great songs and Sridevi looks like a doll. Its nice to see Parveen Babi looking ultra glamorous before things went off kilter for her. The songs are great fun - and of course there's the monkey!

A trained chimp from the US was brought on for key comedic scenes and paid more than most heroines; a whopping Rs 5 lakh! A huge amount in those days (hell, still a huge amount!). Here's a key reference, most heroines were paid between Rs2-4 lakh in the early 1980s.

Sridevi of course famously was the highest paid Indian actress of her time.

Jeetendra and Sridevi rock out in Jaani Dost (1983)

Released 40 years ago today, we're remembering the all-star cast of the film Jaani Dost led by Dharmendra, Jeetendra, Parveen Babi and newcomer to Bollywood, a 20-year-old Sridevi.

Jaani Dost was made in two versions; one in Hindi and the other in Telugu as Adavi Simhalu. Both Sridevi and Jaya Pradha were signed as the heroines in each film - but a few things went awry in production.

Ramesh Sippy (Jeetendra's brother-in-law, not the director of Sholay) was the film's distributor in Bombay (pre-Mumbai!). He suggested they drop one of the heroines because having two Telugu heroines in the film would make it look like too much of a South Indian film, not a Bollywood musical. But who gets cut and replaced in the film? They decided to retain Jaya Prada due to her being familiar with the Hindi audience after the smash hit Sargam, while Sridevi was a new face with a Hindi flop behind her (Solva Saawan). Having worked with Sridevi in Himmatwala, Jeetendra and director K. Raghavendra Rao (a long standing patron of Sridevi who worked with her in 24 films since her childhood), insisted Sridevi stay. The distributors argued that Sridevi could not speak a word of Hindi and it was Jaya who should stay.

As fate would have it, Jaya Prada was removed and Rekha was signed! Jaya Prada of course hit out at her loss of remuneration and spoke to the press about unprofessionalism in Bollywood. Meanwhile, it what would have been a first for Hindi audiences to see Rekha and Sridevi together on the big screen came to naught; legend has it, Rekha was thrown out of the film due to her bad behaviour and unprofessionalism towards director Dasari Narayan Rao on the sets of Asha Jyoti (1981). Eventually Parveen Babi was signed - which then became one of the last films she appeared in before leaving Bollywood.

Those days of Jeetendra, Kader Khan, Shakti Kapoor were staples in Hindi remakes of South Indian films. Jaani Dost followed Himmatwala (the biggest hit of 1983), after that came Justice Chaudhary and then Mawaali in the same year. All three films were directed by the "Manmohan Desai of the south", K. Raghavendra Rao. They weren't great cinema per se, but money-makers who put the 'business' in show-biz.

Upon re-watch, the film isn't much - but Sridevi is hella cute in the movie. And then there's the monkey.

The producer hired a chimp named Lulu from Texas. Her trainer Mike came along with her to India as Lulu would only listen to his every word and command. Lulu charged Rs5 lakhs for the film - a whopping amount when lead actors of Bollywood made anywhere between Rs1-2 lakhs! Leading ladies made even less!! The conversation about pay parity wasn't even a notion back then.

Sridevi's kiss for Parveen Babi: April 4, Birth anniversary of a 70s Screen Icon, the complex Parveen Babi

Sridevi's kiss for Parveen Babi, in the film Jaani Dost (1983)

April 4, Birth anniversary of a 70s Screen Icon, the complex Parveen Babi.

Sridevi and Parveen acted in one film together, the only time the 70s and 80s icons met on screen. And the two shared a warm rapport - when Parveen went on her tell-all interview tour later in life, she only had kind things to say about Sridevi. But then Sri had few rifts with her co-stars.

Parveen's personal trauma and tragedy has been written about too much, and at mostly in unflattering light - we'd like to remember her during the best of her days. Glamorous, gorgeous, gifted, a fashion icon, a brave actor and a fearless one who brought modern complexity to the role of leading lady, instead of the usual, 'Nahin mujhe bachao', damsel in distress trope, while waiting for the hero to rescue her.

Parveen Babi often portrayed unapologetic characters, a reflection of her own unapologetic self. Remembering her today, on her 69th Birth Anniversary.

Jaani Dost and Adavi Simhalu in 1983: Sridevi shoots the same film in Telugu and Hindi simultaneously

Jaani Dost (Best Friends) was released in 1983, produced by C. Ashwini Dutt, M. Arjuna Raju, directed by K. Raghavendra Rao.

It stars Dharmendra, Jeetendra, Parveen Babi, Sridevi, with music composed by Bappi Lahiri.

The film was simultaneously made along with the Telugu-language movie Adavi Simhalu, with Krishna, Krishnam Raju, Sridevi and Jaya Prada in pivotal roles.

Sridevi appeared in both films - Jaya Prada in only the Telugu version (amidst some controversy as Parveen Babi did her role in the Hindi version).

Both the movies were made simultaneously by the same producer and director, some of the scenes and actors are identical in both the versions. The grand finale song was shot simultaneously, hence this star-studded tree; seven superstars of South Indian and Hindi film industry with Sridevi standing front and centre.

The Telugu version hit the theatres first on April 28th, and the Hindi was released a month later on 27th May 1983. Oddly enough, Adavi Simhalu was a smash while Jaani Dost just barely broke even.

Despite the large star cast, the film tanked at the box-office - one of only three films featuring Jeetendra and Sridevi that did not work with the masses.

Sridevi in Jaani Dost (1983)

Click to enlarge - Sridevi at age 19

All of 19 at the time of the film's release with her co-star Jeetendra (then aged 41 - we'll have a discussion on ageism in Bollywood another time!), young Sridevi had just exploded into India's national cinematic consciousness in Feb of 1983 as Himmatwala was a massive hit.

Three months later, by May 1983, the audience wanted to see the repeat magic of the Jeetendra - Sridevi combo but Jaani Dost (despite its hit music and dances) was limp fare at the box-office. Sri looked gorgeous throughout of course.

Parveen Babi, Sridevi, Jeetendra and Dharmendra in Jaani Dost (1983)

Jeetendra, Sridevi, Parveen Babi and Dharmendra on the sets of the film Jaani Dost back in 1983.

Parveen Babi, who was famously caustic with most of Bollywood (especially speaking out against Amitabh Bachchan!) said Sridevi was very sweet to work with.

One of Sridevi's earlier films, its so rare to find snaps from the early 1980s of vintage Sri online. Thankfully we do courtesy of kind and generous fellow Sridevi fans (aka Sridevians; a great word play on Dravidians!) and keep adding to this archive!
Sridevi and Jeetendra in Jaani Dost

Though the film did not recover its costs, Sridevi and Jeetendra went on to do several films together to astounding success at the box office. We've seen the film... its not great. "Time pass."

Vintage posts of the Sridevi - Jeetendra film Jaani Dost (1983) below. Bollywood film art at its kitsch-y-est! This was just a moment after Sridevi had set foot in Bollywood as a newcomer. After her rapid rise, Sridevi featured predominantly in film posters within the year.
