Sridevi

Sridevi from the song Jeevan Jyot Jale from the film Aulad (1987)

Long before daily soap operas monopolised Indian television, 1980s Hindi cinema supplied all the high-voltage family melodrama an audience could ask for. Released in 1987, director Vijay Sadanah’s Aulad stood as a fine example in the genre, weaving a classic tale of swapped infants, tragic train crashes, and the agonising conflict of rival motherhood.

Anchored by Jeetendra, Sridevi, and Jaya Prada, Aulad emerged as a certified box-office hit. Central to its theatrical success was a hit soundtrack composed by Laxmikant–Pyarelal, with lyrics by Anand Bakshi. Songs like the spirited Kishore Kumar and Kavita Krishnamurthy duet "To Phir Ho Jaaye" and the poignant "Ek Maa Ka Dil" provided the emotional beating heart of the narrative, lingering on radio charts long after the film's theatrical run.

At the center of the storm was the iconic rivalry and synergy between Sridevi and Jaya Prada. Having shared the frame across roughly 15 films in Hindi and Telugu - including smash hits like Tohfa and Mawaali - their pairing was pure marquee gold. Contrary to popular memory, Aulad was not their final bow together; they reunited that same year in Majaal [produced by Jaya Prada's family no loess!]. Yet Aulad offered one of their most compelling dual setups, pitting two formidable screen personas against each other in the moral atonement of sacrifice.

While the film leaned heavily into the era's dramatic formulas, Sridevi’s performance as Devki drew unanimous praise. Transitioning effortlessly from a breezy, street-smart entertainer to a grief-stricken mother navigating unimaginable loss, she delivered a performance of remarkable vulnerability. Her expressive eyes carried the full weight of the second half, elevating standard tear-jerker tropes into genuine emotional drama. A dubious decade defined by grand theatricality, Aulad proved that Sridevi’s absolute mastery of dramatic gravitas was unmatched.

Sridevi as a bride in Aulad: 80s soap operatic film from 1987!

Sridevi as a bride in Aulad: 80s soap operatic film from 1987!

Before there were daily soaps and dramas, there were Sridevi-Jeetendra-Jaya Prada movies. High drama, high emotions, "women's pictures"! Morning and afternoon shows with discounts for ladies, the movies were made quickly (or remade quickly as it were -- most were Tamil/Telugu/Malayalam remakes, the petri dish testing ground for big-budget Bollywood movies!), inexpensively made (apart from the salary of the sars!) and released with efficiency to be instant hits. The films were shot at a killer pace too - Jeetendra once mentioned, in 28 days he could churn out a film.

These were not high concept, thoughtful art movies, but morality tales and melodrama made purely to entertain the masses-- and it worked. And how! As we've listed before, the lucrative five years and over a dozen films together of Jeetendra and Sridevi made a lot of money for the industry.

Jeetendra and Sridevi: Bollywood's most successful film pair!

Jeetendra, 45, and Sridevi, 24, on the set of Aulad (1987). It was a soap-operatic film with so much music and melodrama that was one of the biggest hits of the year.

Jeetendra and Sridevi: Bollywood's most successful film pair--look at their statistics. So many films, so many blockbusters, the arrived with a bang together in 1983 and in five years churned out hit after hit (and the occasional flop!).

Despite the age gap, Jeetendra, who was legendarily careful about maintaining himself through diet and exercise, took great pains and sacrifice to maintain his waistline and youthful exuberance while starring in films with co-stars who were decades younger than him.

Never a critic's favourite, but a film producer's, the two brought colour and charm to Hindi cinema.

More of this look from Aulad here.

37 years of Aulad: Jeetendra, Sridevi combo's 80s blockbuster

Released 37 years ago, Aulad was the 6th biggest hit of the year 1987. The magical alchemy of Sridevi, Jeetendra and Jaya Prada, it was a melodrama, soap-operatic  musical with the biggest stars of their time. One of the last few films Sri did with Jeetendra, and the last one with arch nemesis Jaya Prada.

Before the avalanche Indian soap operas and multiple channels, movies like this did well.

Below, rare pic with Jaya Prada, Sridevi, baby Guddu and Saeed Jaffrey

Sridevi in Aulad (1987)

From the song Jeevan Jyot Jale, from the Hindi film Aulad. Kavita Krishnamurthy did playback for Sridevi for this number.

With Mr.India and Aulad in the Top Ten Hindi Blockbuster list back in 1987, Sridevi was firmly ruling Bollywood without any competition in near sight...

Sridevi and Jaya Prada on the sets of Aulad (1987)

The sixth biggest hit of 1987, just one of many career and box-office highs for Sridevi.

Set aside the alleged feuds between Sridevi and other leading ladies, the one that was legit 🔥   was the one between Jaya Prada and Sridevi! Let's give it to the two though that it never translated on screen - the genuinely seemed friendly and like sisters. But off camera, whoaaaa.
