Meenakshi Seshadri and Sridevi in Joshilaay (1989)

Meenakshi Seshadri and Sridevi in Joshilaay which released on Feb 10, 1989!

There are images of the actresses on the sets of the film as far back as 1984!

Mostly directed by Shekhar Kapur, completed by the film's producer Sibte Hassan Rizvi.

An entertaining film, but with a huge Sholay hangover, surprising as Joshilaay's story, screenplay, dialogues and lyrics of the film were written by Javed Akhtar. The music was composed by R. D. Burman. Which is also true of Sholay, which was famously written by Salim-Javed, the most successful writing duo of Indian cinema. The familiar tropes were... all there.

Left: Meenakshi Seshadri and Sridevi in full costume for the film's finale song.

Sridevi with Meenakshi Sheshadiri on the sets of Joshilay. From their finale dance routine. They both performed so well in the number Dhak dhak jiya kare! The 80s colourful costumes... well, I guess it looked fun on the big-screen!

Released on 10 February 1989, after nearly a five year delay in production! Images of Sridevi on set of the film appeared in print magazines in 1984! The long production also makes a fun watch for the peanut gallery to see Sridevi in every size in the film.

The Drama behind Damini: Did you know Sridevi was going to do the Telugu version?

Sridevi, she of infinite-talent and artistry, also had the mind of an executive producer. Happy with the results of Gumrah, there were plans to make it in Telugu, but it didn't materialise. But that certainly wasn't Sridevi's first attempt at producing a movie - even before that, Sridevi loved the script of Damini and wanted to make it in her mothertongue. But things didn't work out for... innumerable reasons.

Many know of Damini's complicated history, but here's a reminder. A rock-solid script and movie, the film originally featured Meenakshi Seshadri who sank her teeth into the role. So mesmerised by his leading lady, the film's writer/director Rajkumar Santoshi proposed to the actress--according to the grapevine--and she, shocked, declined.

The bruised ego, Santoshi ousted her out of the film and sent the script to several leading ladies, perhaps most notably to Madhuri Dixit. Rumours were, even Sridevi, Raveena Tandon and Juhi Chawla were approached, but none of the ladies ever spoke of it. Knowing the circumstances, Madhuri Dixit refused to sign the dotted line, knowing Meenakshi deserved better. The two had worked in two films in the past and Dixit had only fond memories of her senior co-star. Unethical to do a film that was meant for another lady, Madhuri Dixit graciously and gracefully refused to work with Santoshi at the time--despite the role being what it was. When the dust settled and some time had passed, the project took off again with the intended cast of Meenakshi Seshadri, Rishi Kapoor and a memorable scene-stealing (albeit loud!) Sunny Deol.

Damini was a good film and Meenakshi deserved more accolades and trophies for it. A year after the release, despite great reviews and decent box-office, she however lost out the Best Actress Filmfare to Juhi Chawla (for the fun and frothy Hum Hain Rahi Pyar Ke) and it was 'the' talk of the town. The jury was split on who to favour, but the tides had turned. Award shows were no long a meritocracy but enslaved to TRPs and star-wattage for viewership/ad revenue. Juhi was the bigger star, younger, and had a line-up of top films in the early 1990s, while, truth be told, Meenakshi's stardom was fading and her glory-days of the 80s (when she was working with Yash Chopra and Subhash Ghai) had considerably dimmed. Film magazines called her box-office poison for her hits were few and far between, and they called her ice-maiden and... well, among other uncharitable refrains. Film journalism in Bombay (pre-MumbaI) was a hellscape of gossip, innuendo, name-calling and blatant lies. Remember when they stated that a top actor had AIDS? Or implied two leading men were in a covert relationship? Or every star was having an affair with every other?! The erudite Meenakshi didn't take any flak and spoke out against yellow journalism. After the career-defining lightning role and then loss at the award show, she slowly but surely eased out of movies and chose marriage, motherhood and NRI status instead.

Nearly 29 years after her last film release (Ghatak in 1996 BTW for those keeping track!). now the actress has been sending out smoke signals to make a comeback of sorts, doing innumerable interviews, reliving the past and reminding others she's around and open to work. Well, at 61, ageist, sexist film industry hasn't extended a welcoming hand, but of course played lip service to her time and tenure in Bollywood. We are all suckers for nostalgia aren't we?! None of her co-stars are in any position to cast her and her former producers have either passed away or passed the baton forward to next gen--who do not have the same fandom for her erstwhile performances. Television and OTT has provided employment to many a star of varying vintage but, so far, apart from the occasional appearance on reality TV judging show, the former Miss India, classical dancer and actor remains twiddling her thumbs. Waiting.

Meenakshi Seshadri and Sridevi share a tabloid cover in the early 1980s!

Meenakshi Seshadri and Sridevi share a tabloid cover in the early 1980s!

Circa 1984.

For fact checkers and spell checkers, on her official Instagram handle, the actress herself spells her name as "Seshadri" not "Sheshadiri" or any other variations of her maiden name.

Meenakshi Seshadri with Sridevi: Another actress hoping for a comeback

The same age as Sridevi, proficient dancer and actress Meenakshi Seshadri turns 61 today (Nov 16th). As she's heading for a comeback under the archlights after a long spell away from India and industry, a quick look at Sridevi's contemporary, not competition.

As one of the finest dancers in the history of Indian cinema (watch her dances in Teri Payal Mere Geet), she's always been a top star, but never a real threat or contender for Sridevi. Box-office success and blockbusters mostly eluded her. We already know she's a capable actress--Damini deserved more accolades than it eventually got--but will the industry find space for an actor of... a certain age? Her clickbait quote on wanting to do an item song, picked up by innumerable media outlets (including us!) seems... unlikely.

OTT has opened a novel chapter for actresses of a certain vintage, offering either great money, or great roles. Not to have the onus of 'opening weekend' numbers is a plus for any star of any stripe. Back in the day, 30, was the notorious watermark where actresses started getting offered Bhabhi roles - and soon after mother to their once-costars! Look at what happened to Raakhee, Hema Malini and occasionally to Rekha when they played mom to actors their own age - or even older!

We are all for lofty ambitions, but not every devi... is a Sridevi. The stats are firmly against Meenu, as historically, the industry nor the audience is kind to stars who can no longer bring eyeballs (or 'butts on seats' as the expression goes!). Afterall, there are innumerable incredible Indian actresses live and kickin' but remain dutifully unemployed, either by choice (Rekha? Juhi Chawla) or lack of lucrative opportunity (Hema Malini).

What happens to stars who can no longer get prime film roles, but can somewhat pull in crowds? There's politics of course, but as Hugh Grant famously said, "Politics is showbiz for the uglies."

Above: Meenakshi with Sridevi on the sets of the only film  they did together; Joshilaay. Sridevi had all the comic moments and lively dance numbers (a la Hema Malini in Sholay) and Meenakshi had the more sombre role (a la Jaya Bhaduri in Sholay!). Oddly, I found the film a lot of fun to watch, despite its predictability and lacklustre performance at the box-office.

We wish the actress the best of luck in her return to screen - it's certainly not what it used to be. But perhaps, that's a good thing.

Same same, but different... Sridevi and Meenakshi Seshadri: Stylist Edit

Meenakshi Sheshadiri's look from Hero (1983) and Sridevi's in Karma (1986). Both Subash Ghai film productions, the red amrapali dance costumes look alarmingly similar....

Meenakshi Seshadri and Sridevi's original Dhak Dhak

Meenakshi Seshadri and Sridevi's original Dhak Dhak from the film Joshilaay. A lovely song - sung by sisters Aasha Bhosle and Usha Mangehskar no less - and danced so gracefully by these two leading ladies of the 1980s.

Paper war: Sridevi versus Meenakshi Seshadri

Excerpt from an interview with Meenakshi Seshadri regarding Sridevi and their alleged rivalry. Born the same year as Sridevi, these 80s contemporary actresses worked together in one film - Joshilaay - and when Sridevi's career skyrocketed, two-heroine projects were not for Sridevi. In fact, she'd often do a double role instead.

But in the early and mid-1980s, Sridevi and Meenakshi Seshadri - a noted, studied dancer and former Miss India - were pitted against each other in the media. For no reason other than selling tabloids.

Excerpt:

They said she was second only to Sreedevi. But Dimple [Kapadia] wiped her out into near oblivion with talent plus looks. Meenakshi has explanations for both.

No more guarded, wary and Ms Professional, Meenakshi insists she's way above and won't be a strip-tease artiste like a Kimi or a Sonam to remain there!

Meenakshi Seshadri: "Well, if you feel Parivaar became a hit because of monkeys, then all I have to say is that Nagina became a hit because of snakes, and Mr. India was a hit because of the children! For God's sake, Parivaar wasn't just about monkeys - it dealt with human emotions. I can't talk about others, but I know one thing for a fact - I've never failed my audiences in my individual performances.

Q: You make disparaging remarks about senior actresses like Sreedevi - "She makes faces at the camera - that's not acting". And Dimple - "She's survived on the the strength of public sympathy." Statements like these throw light on your insecurities. Why can't you gracefully acknowledge that these actresses have gone way beyond you?

Meenakshi Seshadiri: To start with, I've never made any disparaging remarks about anybody. The comments you are referring to are concocted and fabricated! That's just not the way I speak. Besides, I'm not such a petty person to go running down somebody else. Why should I be insecure or frustrated by anybody? Agreed, that I may not have had the success of a Nagina, but to say that's the end of my career is absolutely ridiculous! How can you forget that Nagina was also a hit for Sreedevi after innumerable flops. I'm also doing heroine-oriented roles which are selling very well. Every film that does well is not solely because of the actress. And let's face one thing - no one individual can make a box-office blockbuster, except Amitabh Bachchan.

#TBT: Rare Pic: Sridevi and Meenakshi Seshadri: Behind the Scenes in Bollywood

Thanks to Movies n Memories for this mega throwback picture of Sridevi and Meenakshi Seshadri on the sets of the much-delayed Hindi film Joshilaay.

The film launched in 1983, the audio was released in 1985, the film finally saw the light of day in 1989! The making of the film could be seen as a comedy of errors [but for the losses incurred by the poor producer!] and a shining example of the rampant disorganisation of Bollywood in that fateful era.

There is a huge archive of features and articles on the film's production hassles - one day we'll sit and scan each page for posterity! While many bemoan the corporatisation of Indian cinema, at least it brought discipline, fiscal responsibility, legal ramifications, contracts, schedules and budgeting into the foray!

Rare pic: Bappi Lahiri, Meenakshi Seshadri, Sridevi and Jeetendra

During the peak of her career, Sridevi rarely, if ever, attended parties or events that were not related to her films (launches, premieres, audio release functions etc). This picture of Sridevi attending a party - guessing it was hosted by her frequest co-star Jeetendra) is so, so rare. Sri in the early 1990s, the cynosure of all eyes.

Meenakshi Seshadri dances with Sridevi: Series of photos from Joshilaay set

Though Meenakshi Seshadri was an articulate actress and a fine dancer (and a beauty queen to boot - she was Miss India 1981 at the age of 17!), she could not match up to the box-office popularity of her southern contemporary and superstar, Sridevi.

The two were on screen briefly in the film Joshilaay and had a fine dance number in it. Hard to say who was better; both danced well and gracefully, but Sridevi brought her own comedic twist to her number.

UPDATE: Below, cover of 'Madhuri' magazine, a Hindi tabloid with Meenakshi Seshadri and Sridevi.
