Once in a lifetime: Manish Malhotra with Sridevi and Rekha

 

During the special screening of Mom in the summer of 2017, Sridevi's best friend, celebrity designer Manish Malhotra got the selfie of all selfies, a picture with the two greatest Indian actresses of all time; Sridevi and Rekha. 

The special screening of Mom was well attended by celebrity friends of the cast and crew of the moive - more images in the archive here.

Throwback to 2017! Manish Malhotra hosted a party to celebrate Sridevi’s 54th birthday, and of course, the entire crème de la crème of Bollywood showed up; an A-list line up of iconic Indian actresses celebrating the female fraternity of film icons. It turned into this rare, magical gathering where actresses of note from different generations came together, looking absolutely stunning and owning every bit of their power. 

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Shabana Azmi, Vidya Balan, Rani Mukerji, Rekha, Tina Ambani, and of course, the birthday girl Sridevi herself — all in one room, smiling, laughing, and clicking those gorgeous photos that just scream timeless elegance and sisterhood.

Vidya Balan looked completely starstruck, like she couldn’t believe she was sharing the same space with all her idols under one roof; Filmfare Awards nite would have died to get this lineup together for a cover, let alone their (increasingly questionable) awards ceremony. 

The energy must have been unreal. I can’t stop wondering what these fierce, legendary women were talking about. Was it scripts, life, family… or were they secretly plotting global domination with their unmatched talent and grace? Or maybe they were just laughing about how the media loves to pit strong women against each other and create unnecessary drama where none exists.

Either way, it was such a refreshing sight — real admiration, no shade, just pure celebration of each other’s journeys. 

Big shoutout and blessings to Manish Malhotra for always creating these special spaces where Bollywood’s most powerful female forces can come together, bond, and shine unapologetically.

As he said, it really is a pleasure and honour to observe the great Sridevi at work. By the time her swansong released, the Hindi thriller Mom in 2017, she had not only mastered the craft, she dominated it. While several of her contemporaries, seniors and to some extent even those who came after her looked for relevance in a ruthless and cut-throat industry that chews up and spits out women in an agist and sexist manner (it still persists despite what frothy and ineffectual editorials claim), Sridevi was leading title roles and delivering award-winning performances till the bitter end.

One of the more telling quotes from Sridevi, said in jest but with a reality check, "Picture se dar nahin lagta, promotion se lagta hai." 

Honestly, Indian film post production work for stars has become such a rigmarole, every actor paraded out to endless media, bloggers, TV shows, exhausted by the same inane Q&A, holding a microphone to promote their films, premiere dates, opening weekend, the tyranny of first week's box-office collection that seals their fate...  Of course times have changed now as OTT platforms has changed the game yet again. 

The few times you can tell Sri had fun, Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Lil Champs! Sridevi famously said she loved kids so there are several clips of her online laughing and encouraging the young talents on the reality TV show back in July 2017! She looked dazzling of course, with Akshay Khanna seated respectfully next to her. Another shy co-star who lets his work speak for him.

Sridevi's Russia trip for the premiere of her film was a playbook in power dressing. Some very clever styling and choices by her stylist Esha Amin Pradhan, a frequent collaborator, it was dressing for the mood, the moment and Moscow! To stand out among a sea of international fans (our fan page's most frequent collabs and corrections come from hardcore fans in Russia - not Tamil Nadu!), Sridevi went for an almost Russian Doll silhoutte and print, looking like the Goddess she was. 

Reflecting on the looks this week as news of designer Rohit Bal's passing hits the net and fashion fan base.

Sridevi and Radhika Apte crossed paths at IFFI back in 2017. Sridevi, queen of commercial cinema and Radhika, the actress of note in alternative cinema (for lack of better term...) met on stage. Wonder if Radhika was a fan of Sri... or just read the copy on the teleprompter... hmm. We'll ask her one day...

7 years of Sridevi's swansong, Mom: A National Award winning performance. 

Well, she should have won it years before... 

The performances elevated the film and its predictable plot. For Sridevi fanatics who were surprised at the lukewarm reception the film got from film-critics, no film is released in a vaccum, but in context. Imagine being the poor slob who has to watch incessant rape-films with the avenging parent plot line, again and again. And again. Maatr had just released weeks before with Raveena Tandon, the Marathi film Ajji, and later Bhoomi. 

It was the film industry's trigger response to the horrors of the headlines of that year. You can't find  justice in real life, find catharsis in reels. 

The cast did a phenomenal job in this movie - not a single character was off pitch. Sajal and Sridevi were in a league of their own. Nawaz's look and antics were written about a lot but, Nawaz is always good. 

The film has the infamy of being the great Sridevi's last film so will have a longer shelf life than most other movies of the genre. But in her 200+ film repertoire, there are other peaks and valleys.
