Sridevi and Amitabh Bachchan: An Age Gap Ignored in Inquilaab

High-def cameras on television and film are not celebrity-friendly! Bring back the soft filters and fog lights!

It's really clear on the big screen when there's a massive age gap between stars. Now, with high-def TV, it's also clear at home—no wonder many celebrities famously request filters.

This high-def screengrab of Sridevi with Amitabh Bachchan in their first film together, Inquilaab (1984)—successful as it was—makes the age gap suddenly, vividly clear.

Amitabh Bachchan was born on October 11, 1942; Sridevi was born on August 13, 1963. The difference between them is 20 years and about 11 months. Their on-screen pairings, like in Khuda Gawah (1992), where the gap was noted as around 21 years at the time (Amitabh ~50, Sridevi ~29), or in Inquilaab (around 20+ years: Amitabh ~41–42, Sridevi ~20–21), have been mentioned in online reviews and film writing, features, analysis and journals.

Age gaps between senior actors and increasingly younger actresses are so common in Bollywood even today that no one bats an eye. A few self-proclaimed feminists will rant online and on social media, to absolutely no effect. Hell, the MeToo movement in Bollywood and Indian cinema created headlines but brought about nominal, verifiably little change despite all the rooftop soapbox yelling. All the accused may have gone off radar for a while, but seem to be back at work once again and making their money with full employment and little to no recourse.

The fact of the matter is that change in Bollywood only comes about when there's monetary impact; if it affected the box office, things would evolve rapidly. If the audience boycotted actors who have been accused of heinous crimes, or boycotted uncomfortable age gaps, the industry would do a 180 on its own. Market forces would force improvements. Until then, you'll see Salman Khan romancing Disha Patani, despite their age gap of 27 years!

Funny how the tables have never turned. a mature leading lady with a younger male co-star has never really caused ripples. A 20-year age gap between stars would be, for example, Madhuri Dixit and a contemporary star today would be—if she were working in a film with Tiger Shroff, Varun Dhawan, or Kartik Aaryan—but would it ever happen?! Would be unthinkable to most film producers bar none

Remember the fuss the media made when the divine Aishwarya Rai Bachchan worked with Ranbir Kapoor in Ae Dil Hai Mushqil and old hacks like RS brought it up in interviews?! Trying to get a response from the unfazed Rai-Bachchan?! Ash was nearly 9 years older, but looked phenomenal in the film, styled to perfected by the Dharma crew. Since then, we see no signs of older actrresses with younger co-stars.

Sridevi's look from Inquilaab: The Song Bichhoo Lad Gaya

Sridevi's look from Inquilaab, the chartbuster Bichhoo Lad Gaya

The makeup, the clothes, considering it was the 1980s, a decade of questionable fashion and campy makeup, this is pretty damn cute. Or perhaps that was just Sri...

Sridevi and Amitabh Bachchan in Inquilaab (1984): 40 years of Inquilaab

Released on January 25, 1984, Inquilaab with Sridevi and Amitabh Bachchan, their first film together, was a huge hit.

Sridevi, 20 and Amitabh Bachchan, 42, made a striking pair... despite the age-gap.

An era of age gap, wage gap... and for Sri, language gap too.

Grabbing Success on the Go: Amitabh Bachchan and Sridevi

Amitabh Bachchan, 42, with Sridevi, 21, in Inquilaab (1984).

Yep, Sridevi was 21 and her co-star, Big B, was 21 years her senior.

Sridevi stated in the press that year, "My role in Inquilaab is very small. I had nothing much to do. But I was the only heroine in the film. I did not mind. It was a good break for me to work with Amitabh Bachchan."

The casting coup was consequential for many reasons. The first film Amitabh Bachchan had signed after his Coolie accident, all his earlier, regular heroines - Raakhee, Hema Malini, Zeenat Aman, Parveen Babi - had either married and/or moved on. Sridevi had scored blockbusters in 1983 and was the hottest young newcomer in Bollywood (Bombay press ignored her lengthy career in Tamil cinema as most editors weren't particularly cinema-literate but convent-educated with an ease in English and little to no knowledge of what was going on a state border across).

Himmatwala, Jaani Dost and Justice Chaudhry were smash hits that revived a flaying career of 'Jumping Jack Jeetendra'. Amitabh's heroine for the first time, it was news everywhere that the siren of the south was acting opposite Big B. This film literally started a new chapter in Amitabh Bachchan's stellar career.

The next generation of 20 somethings- Sridevi, Jayaprada, Madhavi, Meenakshi Sheshadri, Amrita Singh were the new heroines he constantly went on to star with during the 1980s, before his self-imposed (thankfully temporary) retirement from movies and a tragic tryst with politics in 1994.

With the adage rest is rust, till date, AB Snr remains the hardest working actor alive.

Expressive Indian actress Sridevi, 20, in Inquilaab (1984).

Released early 1984, when she shot the film, she had just turned 20, working with the definitive superstar of Indian cinema, Amitabh Bachchan - who was 21 years older than her!

Her poise, height and elegance matched Big B and they worked in successful films together.

20 year old Sridevi in Inquilaab

20 year old Sridevi in Inquilaab.

Released in January of 1984, Sridevi was just 20 years old when the movie released with her superstar co-star, Amitabh Bachchan, who was about to turn 42!

She said that she was so in awe of her tall hero that she barely spoke to him and observed. They finally got comfortable working together by the time they shot Khuda Gawah years later.

Meanwhile, working the fashion of the time, Sridevi looked ultra glam in the early 1980s in Bollywood.

Inquilaab: More Drama Behind the Screen than in Front! Look back at Amitabh Bachchan's first superhit with Sridevi

Behind the scenes drama, petty politics, professional harakiri, rivalry, back stabbing, Chinese whispers, Machiavellian maneuvers have existed in Bollywood for decades. We are just more aware of it now thanks to overshare on social media by those actively involved in or the behind the curtains of mystifying Bollywood. Voices from the margins who guise themselves and speak freely online with no repercussions are now taking centre-stage in media. And this is problematic on many levels.

In the not so distant past, rivalries were aired out in public. For example, look at the schemes that went on behind the scenes of Inquilaab; more drama backstage than what happened on screen! Snippets from the tabloids back in 1984;

"Panic struck on Novemver 11 1983, Aaj Ka MLA was launched with a 10 day shooting spell. the director Dasari Narayana Rao approached Dilip Kumar for the film but he declined. He also approached Amitabh for a another film, but he also declined.

At a party at Srinagar, before a crowd of over a 100 people, Narayana Rao proclaimed he would make a bigger hit than Avtaar with Rajesh Khanna. The film was a remake of Eedukonadalu. It dealt with a chief minister and the Congress government tried to ban it before the elections that brought NTR into power. But not many knew about Aaj Ka MLA before hand.

The launch and mahurat of the film came as a shock, specifically to T Rama Rao who was a rival of director Dasari Narayana Rao. On the same day the producer of Inquilaab, A. Veeraswamy, made a frantic phone call to Amitabh. He was angry and yelling, stammering over his words. Amitabh asked him to calm down and come down to Delhi to meet him and speak about the matter.

A.Veeraswamy,T.Rama Rao, S.Ramananthan, Poornachandra Rao all boarded an urgent flight to meet Amitabh in Delhi. Upon landing ,A.Veeraswamy told Amitabh that Dasari Narayana Rao launched Aaj Ka MLA which was a remake of Telugu hit MLA Eedukonadalu. It was a plan to sabotage Inquilaab. Amitabh was said to have laughed it off not taking it seriously. When Poornachandra Rao explained further how bad the situation was, Amitabh was shaken. Aaj Ka MLA was actually planned to be launched in January 1984. When there was a slight delay in Inquilaab due to Amitabh severely injuring his left hand during Diwali celebrations. Rajesh Khanna contacted Dasari Narayana Rao. He wanted to lift the entire second half of Inquilaab and add it to Aaj Ka MLA. The producer T.Kranthi,Dasari Narayana Rao and Rajesh Khanna had plans to shoot and complete the film before Inquilaab could release. They were all aware Inquilaab would take another 8 months due to Amitabh canceling Tinnu Anand and Prakash Mehra's films in November, December, January.

Amitabh was taken back by the situation. But a doubt lingered in his mind. He questioned the credibility of the situation. T.Rama Rao made a phone call to writer Dr. Rahi Masoom Raza. He was the dialogue writer for Inquilaab and Aaj Ka MLA. Masoom Raza spoke to Amitabh and confirmed the entire story. Amitabh was disturbed but could understand why Dasari Narayana Rao would join hands with Rajesh Khanna. Narayana Rao had approached Amitabh for another film which Amitabh declined. He then approached Amitabh again for Aaj Ka MLA. Amitabh declined the offer in favor for A.Veeraswamy's Inquilaab. Amitabh realized how serious the situation was and decided to immediately shoot Inquilaab against doctors orders.

Amitabh would need constant medical attention on the sets and the bandages could not be removed no matter what. So T.Rama Rao decided Amitabh's character would constantly have one hand in his pocket at all times. Amitabh called Prakash Mehra and explained the situation to him. Prakash Mehra gave Amitabh the go ahead to shoot Inquilaab before Sharaabi. He would not be angry about this. So just 10 days after Aaj Ka MLA was launched on November 21, Amitabh flew to Madras and shot for Inquilaab nonstop. The situation was such that the Mumbai actors were offered three times more money in cash if they could give immediate shooting dates and complete their scenes fast.

Prakash Mehra blasted Rajesh Khanna in the print. Mehra called Khanna petty for playing this dirty game with Amitabh. Amitabh's hand was all black from being burnt. He needed to go to USA for skin grafting. Now he could not do that immediately due to Rajesh Khanna trying to sabotage Inquilaab. Rajesh Khanna got word about Inquilaab's new progress and promised immediate dates for the film.

The mahurat for Inquilaab was held on October 26 ,1983, and the film hit cinemas in record time, with one nonstop shooting schedule and released on 25 January 1984!

But for unknown reasons Aaj Ka MLA got postponed slightly making it release after Inquilaab on 2 March 1984.

Despite completing a silver jubilee however, the film was considered an above average earner. Gradually, it became a gold mine for the distributor on re-release. Even in the mid 90s, the movie celebrated 50 days stupendous run at Majestic theater in Calcutta."

Sridevi's sizzling sari stylin' in Inquilaab (1984): Sri's first film and blockbuster with Amitabh Bachchan

A few frames from the film Inquilaab (1984) where Sridevi graced the screen with her impeccable chiffon saris, colourful salwaars. Though this was still early days in Bollywood for Sridevi, by then, Sri had already won a Best Actress award, was a veteran of sorts, and had enough experience to know how important 'the look' was in a film.

"Filmy fashion" was mostly a derogatory term until recent years. Sridevi, with her innate fashion sense was rather refreshing on the big screen, bringing contemporary fashion to the big screen with the aid of her faithful companion, Sreelatha, her younger sister. Many contemporary designers have pointed out - be it Manish Malhotra or Neeta Lulla--that Sridevi had a great sense of colour, fit and flow. She knew a role should have a consistent look per character on film, her elephantine memory (which many have talked about), tried to ensure that no matter how long her screen time was, she looked picture perfect in every frame. And she did!

Famously, around the early 1980s, long before celebrity endorsements, advertisement and 'brand ambassador-ship (a phrase coined by some clever PR!), Sridevi was doing adverts for Indian Emporium sarees, Bombay Dyeing, Cema lights and so many more! There were posters of Sridevi wearing her gorgeously draped sarees in Hong Kong (particularly Tsim Tsa Tsui) from the mid 1980s. If ever Vogue India does a chapter on film and fashion, Sridevi's name will be written in bold. Just look at the long, long list of designer fans Sridevi has. Till date.

Below: Bollywood film posters of the 1984 film, Inquilaab with Sridevi and Amitabh Bachchan.

Sridevi was just 21 when she first worked with Amitabh Bachchan (42) in the film Inquilaab.
