MOVIE: Why do you make films only from the male perspective. You’ve worked with all the top actresses today - Madhuri (Mahasangram), Sridevi (Khuda Gawah) and Juhi (Sultanat). Don’t they inspire you to see things from a feminine point of view sometimes? 

Mukul Anand: Sridevi inspired me to make Khuda Gawah where she had a double role. Dimple inspired me to make an Aitbaar. What I like about Sridevi is her tremendous dedication to her work. Madhuri has used her simplicity to her advantage while Juhi has come up by sheer hard work. I remember after Sultanat, Juhi felt so cheated and disillusioned with her bad performance. I told her, she would have to learn the nuances of acting and dancing, right from scratch — which she eventually did. I am so happy she has prospered.

Filmfare's fall from grace is... sad. But at least its around. So many of my ol' favourite magazines and tabloids have gone; Aura, Showtime, G magazine, Tinsel Town, Zee...

The biggest - and I do mean the BIGGEST - and most glamorous stars of Bollywood did an ad - for free! - for Cine Blitz magazine back in 1989! This would be unheard of today! 

In the above clip find glamorous Dimple Kapadia, Rekha, Amitabh Bachchan and Sridevi advocate for Cine Blitz as 'the' celebrity magazine to grab.

Dimple Kapadia, "Sridevi was too good": Famous Fan

Today, June 8, is Dimple Kapadia's birthday - this quote about Sridevi from Dimple is lovely - not as funny as the one she had about Rajesh Khanna! 

Dimple Kapadia, "There is no role that I look forward to. I have done enough and I am not dissatisfied with the body of work that I have done. Sadma (1983) was one film I was supposed to do, but unfortunately Sridevi did it. That remains one role I wanted to do but after seeing Sridevi, that desire died. She was too good."

When asked about who her favourite actress is, Dimple Kapadia said in the same feature, "The best heroine around today is, unquestionably Sridevi. She's miles ahead of the rest and I am a great admirer of her. If you ask me who my favourite is, the answer would be simple, Sridevi. She is number one. Even you have said that."

As wonderful an actress Dimple is/was and so famously beautiful (that mane of hair is beyond compare), the one thing we loved about Dimple Kapadia unfiltered uncensored interviews. She was so much fun to read. No PC BS, just as truthful as she could humanly be.

The greats of Bollywood... in Filmfare; Sridevi, Dimple Kapadia and Rekha. More in the magazine but obviously, we were looking at just this page. Well, a third of it! ;0)

Excerpt;

Sridevi

She entered the Hindi industry as a child star in Julie (1975). her first hit was Himmatwala (1983). From playing second fiddle to Jeetendra in remakes of South melodramas, she slowly became the actor who had the guts to refuse films with Amitabh Bachchan, until she got equal footing in Khuda Gawah (1992). Apart from her dramatic presence in films like Sadma (1983), she became known for her comic timing in films such as Mr India (1987) and Chaalbaaz (1989). She carried films like Chandni (1989) and Lamhe (1991) on her shoulders and became our first female superstar. She won her Filmfare Best Actor trophies for Chaalbaaz and Lamhe.

The Illustrated Weekly of India's bril cover with Dimple Kapadia paying homage to Charlie Chaplin! Its cute but, colour us biased but we preferred Sridevi's recreation, tribute act in Mr.India to the lustriously coiffed Mz Kapadia.

Sadma (1983): Kamal Haasan and Sridevi's remake of Tamil hit Moondram Pirai

Sridevi, "The last scene where Kamal Haasan tries in vain to make me recall the time I spent with him was heart-wrenching. I couldn't show even a glimmer of recognition. My four-year-old-cousin refused to talk to me for days after that. He said that I had behaved like a vamp!

A remake somehow loses the original's spontaneity. The magic of Moondram Pirai was something else."

Contrary to popular belief, Sridevi did not receive a National award for Sadma - however much she deserved it. Kamal Haasan continued his winning streak as this was his n'th award.
