Sridevi in Pathar ke Insan. A dreadful mess of a movie. But Sridevi looks glorious in it. Kajol and Tanishaa mentioned how much they loved the movie - but... mostly as their father made the film. 

Post Chandni and Chaalbaaz, there were several missteps and wrong film choices... but by the time Sridevi self-corrected, the crown had been passed on.

Released on 25th May... (some say 29 May!) 1987, the blockbuster that was an era defining film, the magical Mr.India.

Maqsad: The all-star cast: Sridevi, Rajesh Khanna, Jaya Prada and Jaya Prada

 

Released on May 4, 1984, Maqsad (The Motive) is an action-drama film directed by K. Bapaiah and produced by D. Rama Naidu (Suresh Productions), Remake of the 1983 Telugu film Mundadugu.

Shot in less than 40 days, out of the Madras movie factory, the remake was an instant hit. Today, it's only remembered for Sridevi and Jaya Prada's epic dance off. While watching Dola re dola re, in Devdas, you don't know who to look at - Aishwarya Rai or Madhuri Dixit; its deja vu for us. While watching the song and dance routine of Naagraja, you don't know who to look at - the learned dancer Jaya Prada, or the naturally gifted Sridevi. Both aced it Jaya Prada's poise and perfection, Sridevi's grace and fluid movements. Sridevi towered over short Jaya, but Jaya Prada's face was flawless back then...

Released on April 27, 1984, Maqsad was led by an all-star cast of Jeetendra, Rajesh Khanna, Sridevi and Jaya Prada. The film is no great shakes, but we were all shook up when we saw the epic dance-off between the famously warring leading ladies, Sridevi and Jaya Prada. The film is worth watching only to see these two dancing icons work their hardest. They made each other better. Both are so damn good in it, even with our cognitive bias in favour of Sridevi, cannot decide who is better. Expressions, movement, elegance, grace, precision, both are fantastic.

The men are... well, overacting their way through the dance, but really, no one's looking at them when these flashes of blue and pink are raging on the screen.

Outside the sets of the hit film Maqsad. A movie with little to speak of other than it is the usual 80s masala potboiler. The only thing worth revisiting is the epic dance off between the famous feuding Telugu superstars, Jaya Prada and Sridevi.

Sridevi presents S Janaki her lifetime achievement award

Sistla Sreeramamurthy Janaki, known mostly as the legendary singer S Janaki was born on 23 April 1938. Sridevi presented the singer her lifetime achievement award back in 2007.

We honour the "Nightingale of the South" today on her 88th birthday. 

S. Janaki sang roughly 90–100 songs for Sridevi (across Tamil, Telugu, and a few Hindi films), mostly in the 1970s–1980s. This is based on the comprehensive list on her official/fan-maintained site (sjanaki.net), which catalogs dozens of Tamil and Telugu playback tracks where Janaki voiced Sridevi, plus a handful of Hindi ones noted separately. Exact counts vary slightly by source (as some films had multiple versions/dubs or solos/duets), but it’s a substantial body of work that helped define Sridevi’s early superstar image in South Indian cinema.

 Many of these are evergreen classics, especially the Ilaiyaraaja-scored Tamil hits from the late 1970s that blended melody, emotion, and Sridevi’s expressive screen presence. Telugu versions/remakes often adapted or reused tunes. Hindi songs were fewer but included some chart-toppers.

Throwback to circa 1991-1992 when Sridevi arrived in a simple blue chiffon sari at an event--a rare occurrence--for co-star and friend Poonam Dhillon, as Poonam launched a new venture in Bollywood; the prized vanity van for stars.

Remembering the first Indian superstar, Rajesh Khanna, who was born on December 29, 1942, in Amritsar, India! 

Sridevi worked with him in four films, ALL were hits. Not sure she enjoyed the experience tho'... he had a famously mercurial temperament. And was always, always late on set, keeping the punctual south Indian superstar... waiting! When she became 'the' top star of her time, she stopped working with him altogether. 

Ah but que sera sera. Let's remember Rajesh Khanna for the phenomenon that he was. His successes, the music in his films, his range and variety. Sure he failed on occasion, but we remember the triumphs more, don't we? 

Rajesh Khanna spoke well about Sridevi, but not as gushingly as his ex-wife Dimple Kapadia or daughter Twinkle Khanna or son-in-law Akshay Kumar did. All mega fans of Sridevi!

A look from Mr.India, the other from Pathar Ke Insaan. The silver accessories, the monochrome blue, the soft chiffon, down to the blue bindi... Sridevi styled herself in a very familiar and similar look. She looked better with the toned down makeup of the 90s compared to the high gloss of the 80s.

Sridevi and comedian Asrani appeared together in several hit Hindi films during the 1980s, often within Jeetendra-starrer family dramas or comedies directed by K. Raghavendra Rao.

Sad to hear that Asrani, veteran Indian actor and comedian passed away earlier today (20 October 2025), at the age of 84. Legend has it that he appeared in over 350 Hindi and Gujrati films. He appeared in the above ten with Sridevi. Funny how fate works; Sridevi passed age 54, Asrani age 84. Life is cruel...
