Sridevi in Lamhe

So many expressions and beauty - Sridevi in Meri Bindiya...

And to cap that was this memroable scene....

What an actor she was.

Sridevi

Sridevi and Govinda in Gair Kanooni

Govinda and Sridevi in the only film they did together, the hodge-podge Gair Kanooni (1989). Released after a lot of erratic shooting schedules and delay, Sridevi appears in several sizes and fashion throughout the movie. Born the same year, the two stars could match wit, dance, pathos and drama in equal measure - but alas they deserved a better film, a better comedy in fact than this film - though it was the surprise hit of 1989.

Gorgeous Sridevi was a bit on the chubby side in parts of the movie, but groomed herself to look like the superstar that she became.

As Govinda turns 61 today, here's wishing the capable actor the very best. We just heard his son is about to be launched, but here's hoping Govinda makes a decent comeback.

Sridevi in classic 80s melodrama: Nazrana

Sridevi in classic 80s melodrama, the weepy Nazrana.

Before the television industry became this wildly oversaturated and oversubscribed behemoth, there were classic Bollywood melodramas, "women's picture" as the tag was in the early days. Sridevi, Rekha, Jaya Prada, Meenakshi all appeared in so many of them. The sari and sindoor weepy dramas with loads of songs and Jeetendra/Rishi Kapoor/Mithun...

While others were a bit more Sati-Savitri... Sridevi, provided the oomph factor, a cheeky sensuality that made her a top draw at the box-office... and criticism. Mind you, the sharpest arrows came from her competitors, be it Jaya Prada, or even an unkind word from Meenakshi, neither of them had the box-office power or success of Sri.

Well, all water under the bridge now as each have been singing praises of Sridevi in tear-eyed tributes. A mea culpa in hindsight... Hmm. But we don't forget.

Sridevi in Inquilaab (1984)

Expressive Indian actress Sridevi, 20, in Inquilaab (1984).

Released early 1984, when she shot the film, she had just turned 20, working with the definitive superstar of Indian cinema, Amitabh Bachchan - who was 21 years older than her!

Her poise, height and elegance matched Big B and they worked in successful films together.

From the song Jeevan Jyot Jale, from the Hindi film Aulad. Kavita Krishnamurthy did playback for Sridevi for this number.

With Mr.India and Aulad in the Top Ten Hindi Blockbuster list back in 1987, Sridevi was firmly ruling Bollywood without any competition in near sight...
