Diwali release of 1991: Banjaran! Sridevi's surprise hit

Nov 4 2021, today many are celebrating Diwali around the world. Here's a throwback to 1991 when Sridevi's film with Rishi Kapoor, Banjaran, hit the screens.

Hindsight now reveals that the movie opened well, dipped after a critical thrashing (its a deeply flawed and poorly edited movie) but rose in popularity again. Currently, the songs of Banjaran featuring Sridevi have over 80 million views. There's a huge cult following for the film for its songs and dances.

Sridevi and Sunny Deol on the sets of Joshilaay

Sridevi and Sunny Deol on the sets of Joshilaay - these images from the song Dhar dum chak lag gayee. Sridevi dances so gracefully - check it out on YouTube.

Shot over a long period of time and finally released 10 February 1989 (filming started circa 1986!), the movie has its moments and then a few lulls. Part of the film was directed by Shekhar Kapur and he left mid-way - the producer then took over and completed the film himself!

Below: Rare pics of Sridevi on the sets of Joshilay, rehearsing with choreographer and fellow dancers.

Sridevi on the sets of Joshilaay: Sridevi's gypsy look for a Bollywood film

Call us partial, but Sridevi is the best thing in action flick Joshilaay. Seen here on the sets of the much delayed film, Sridevi worked with "one of her favourite directors" Shekhar Kapur (having worked with him previous in Mr. India). But the film was completed by the producer Sibte Hasan Rizvi when the Kapur left the film midway after much dispute and delays. The movie was in production for years, from 1984 to 1989!

Shot in Leh and Ladakh, the movie is visually sumptuous. Check out Sri's songs in the film, she's so graceful and fluid with her movements. And her comedy with Sunny Deol is bril.
