Eternal Chandni: Sridevi

Some of the most memorable stills from Sridevi's doppelganger, her alter ego, her soulful avatar; the great Sridevi in and as Chandni.

Sridevi herself said in an interview with MOVIE magazine that she was most like her character in Chandni. Sometimes actors fit into the mold of a character so intensely, they can't distinguish where they end, their on screen character begins. This has happened often; Madhuri Dixit said she was most like her character in Hum Aapke Hain Kaun, Juhi said of Hum Hai Rahi Pyar Ke, Rekha, most like Khoobsurat!.

Sridevi, "I don't have any one favorite film but Chandni, Nagina and Mr. India are my three absolute favorites. It's not very often that a character you play is like you. To an extent Chandni is. The character of a small town girl who with the passage of time and because of her experiences in the city, becomes a woman who can handle her own life is like me. Except in Chandni, Rishi got out of the woman's life, but no man went out of my life (laughs)...."

The Art work of the official Chandni poster: Bollywood icons Vinod Khanna, Sridevi and Rishi Kapoor

The art of Bollywood film posters is slowly dying out. The skillset, the workers, the raw talent fading out...

This Yash Chopra classic we have in every version; video cassette, VCD, DVD, laser!!

At least we have a part of the art.

Sridevi's streak of red...

Ah the red sari with an embroidered border... Three of Sridevi's most famous look. Pretty, sensuous and
oh-so-beautiful.

Sridevi at 19 or Sridevi at 49, just a classic Indian beauty.

Director Shekhar Kapur's tribute to Sridevi on her 60th Birth Anniversary on Twitter and Instagram

Shekhar Kapur, "Happy Birthday SriDevi … wherever you are ..

We promised each other at least one more film, after Mr India , if not more. But you left us. Left us with broken hearts and amazing memories.

I remember the days we were filming this iconic song iconic image of ‘I Love you’ .. you hid from me that you were running a high fever… and you were in numbing pain.. That everyone advised you to rest, and certainly not allow yourself to get wet, that you could land up being seriously ill .. I only found out from our Choreographer Saroj Khan after we had finished shooting. You made her swear she wouldn’t tell me ..

I remember the days we shot, take after take, day after day. And you would come up to me after every shot ..

‘It’s ok na ?.. you sure .. pucca? shall we do it again? I can see in your eyes your are not fully satisfied’

And all the time you were burning with fever and in a lot of pain ..

That’s what you did throughout Mr India .. you had that instinct of knowing whether I was completely happy with your shot or not .. even with a flick of my eyes ..

You would search in my eyes to see if there was a hint of a doubt .. so no wonder your performance in Mr India still stands out as one of the most iconic performances in Hindi films for all of time ..

We miss you , Sri ..
