Filmfare: Sridevi: The Last Empress?

SRIDEVI: The Last Empress?
She's been up there. Right on top. At the most coveted spot. Number One. Like a rock, on the shifting sands of stardom. Unmindful of the 'competition' thrown up by the media.

Sridevi with Rishi Kapoor in Chandni (1989)

Remembering Rishi Kapoor today on his birth anniversary. Born on 4 Sep 1952, Rishi Kapoor's underrated performance in Chandni needs to be revisited. He was fantastic; matched Sridevi step by step. Be it in the comedy, drama, the songs and dances... a natural foil to the exuberant Sridevi.

He was the most fun, outspoken man of his time. Always gave great interviews.

Sridevi on the sets of Chaand Kaa Tukdaa (1994)

Released on 19 August 1994, Sridevi, 31, on the sets of the heavily criticised Hindi film Chaand kaa Tukdaa.

I was today years old when I learned that this awful, awful movie... actually made money! The star power of Sridevi and Salman Khan (in that order - Sri had the title role!) meant this movie grossed more than its budget in the long run.

Budget ₹2.75 crore
Box office ₹3.88 crore!

Sridevi and NTR on the cover of Sunday magazine

Wow, there was a time in Indian cinema history when Sridevi was on the cover of a magazine and the editors thought not to even name her!! Just NTR  "with heroine!"

Well, back then Sridevi was just 19, her famous co-star was 60 - and making headlines as he jumped from cinema to the political bandwagon, cashing in on his wild popularity in Andhra.

They say star power is power; well, political power is real power in India. The more things change, the more they stay the same.

Sridevi and Anil Kapoor in Lamhe: Their finest hours together on the big screen

Anil Kapoor was 34 when he shot Lamhe - and its easily one of his best performances. That somehow got entirely sidelined as Sridevi gave her tour-de-force award-winning double role everything in her acting armoire.

Anil Kapoor lost the Filmfare Award for Best Actor for Lamhe to Amitabh Bachchan, who won the award for his iconic role as Tiger in Hum at the 37th Filmfare Awards in 1992.

While Lamhe led the ceremony with 13 nominations and won 5 awards—including Best Film and Best Actress for Sridevi—Amitabh Bachchan took home the Best Actor trophy in a competitive year that also featured fellow nominees Dilip Kumar (Saudagar), Sanjay Dutt (Saajan), and Aamir Khan (Dil Hai Ke Manta Nahin).

The following year, Anil Kapoor rebounded by winning the Filmfare Award for Best Actor at the 38th Filmfare Awards (1993) for his performance as Raju in Beta (1992)Beta was a major hit at the awards, sweeping 5 categories including Best Actress for Madhuri Dixit and Best Supporting Actress for Aruna Irani.

Funnily enough, personally, Anil Kapoor should have won for Lamhe, and Amitabh Bachchan should have won for Khuda Gawah - swap the awards around!

But Filmfare frequently gets it wrong. Never forget, Sholay lost all but one award.

All Indian award shows in cinema are rife with questionable decisions - you can't take any of the awards seriously.

Sridevi - and several other stars with experience - famously stated that she'd rather a film do well at the box office than just win awards that end up collecting dust in the shelf.

TBT: Sridevi arriving at Filmfare Awards: Dressed to the hilt for her Best Actress win

In a tell-all interview, Pankaj Parasher revealed that Sridevi knew days before the award show that she was going to win Best Actress at Filmfare for her performance in Chaalbaaaz - and that's the only way she would turn up for the show. She was so busy in 1989/1990 period that to fly down to Mumbai, a trophy and award had to be dangled at the end of the stick!

Sridevi was a workaholic, a dozen releases a year was not uncommon, so she didn't waste time at parties, events and award shows unless pertaining to her film/work. When Sridevi made her first appearance at the Hindi Filmfare awards nite, all eyes were on her - she rarely made public appearances.

Sridevi in and as Malini Iyer

I've never wanted to like a show more... alas. Sridevi in, yet another title role, Malini Iyer - such wasted opportunity. Shoddy writing, direction, production... As a super fan, was so disappointed. But that was a strange year for Sridevi and family... There are a few bright spots - Sridevi looked like a dream, there are a few moments of genuine laughter... The rest.. well..
