Sridevi's pigtails in Gurudev

Sridevi didn't have the title role, but she had yet another double-role in Gurudev.

Released on 3 September 1993, Gurudev was a typical 80s action masala film that released in 1993! Hear me out, when the movie was conceived and launched in 1988, it had Sridevi (in a double role as Priya/Sunita/Rosy), Anil Kapoor (as Gaurav "Guru"), and Rishi Kapoor (as Inspector Dev). It was produced and initially directed by Vinod Mehra (who passed away during production), with Raj Sippy completing the film. The stars of the film bandied together to ensure the film was released as it had so many production issues.

Sridevi with Sanjay Dutt in Gumrah

Four years older than Sridevi, Sanjay Dutt turns 67 today. They appeared famously in Gumrah back in 1993, and Dutt also worked briefly for a day with Sridevi in Khuda Gawah

There are several online reports that the contemporaries never worked together in the 1980s as an allegedly drugged out Sanjay Dutt scared young Sridevi when she first started off in the Hindi film industry... but its unverified sources from notoriously unreliable film magazines from that decade. We're not that keen on speculative misinformation and thankfully there are now several video, audio and podcasts and such, from the voices of those who were there, retelling what really happened.

Unless Sanjay Dutt himself confirms this news, we are taking it with a pinch of salt.

Sanju baba is officially a senior citizen now. Still a working actor -- there's one more Munna bhai in him. Just need the writers and director to hone in.

Celebrity designer Neeta Lulla on working with Sridevi

Celebrity designer Neeta Lulla on working with Sridevi when she started her career;

"....By 1992 I had already worked with Sridevi on many projects. She asked me to come in and work on this film [Roop ki Rani Choron ka Raja] as well, that was the time when she used to work in 2-3 films simultaneously so we were shooting on film first half of the day to a photoshoot and then another shoot the second half.

The reason I selected this image is because I can never forget this rust colour. Sridevi had a great sense of colour and I owe my sensibility of colours to complimenting visuals from her. She described this colour as the colour we get when the marigold flower is semi dried and a fabric that had a very slight sheen and had a good fall, so I used a soft spun silk which was available then.

The reason to use this image is also because I cannot forget the day of this shoot at RK Studio when we shot for this scene and then did a quick shoot with Gautam Rajadhyaksha for the cover of G Magazine in 30 minutes where I dressed her torso upwards in this look and then we resumed the film shoot later. Her dedication prioritisation and timing to complete her commitments is what has inspired me to this day."

Sridevi with Sunny Deol on the sets of Chaalbaaz

Yet another rain song for Sridevi. The much talked about Kisike haath na aayegi from Chaalbaaz

With the wet Sunny Deol, who somehow managed to keep up with Sridevi, despite being one of the worst dancers in the history of Indian cinema. Saw Jeet in the cinema back in the day and when Sunny paji was dancing to Yaara oh Yaara, the audience burst out laughing - Kiku Sharma still uses that as reference in the comedy show when he mimics Sunny. Well, they were laughing all the way to the bank as Jeet was a superhit and Chaalbaaz was a success as well.

Only in India do we need action stars to be great dancers as well! I mean, you can't imagine Sylvester Stallone or Jean Claude Van Damme cutting a rug can you?! Well, there is that lol-meme of JCVD dancing in the 80s... cringe.

The earliest picture of Sridevi and Madhuri Dixit sharing a stage together: Summer of 1990!

Well, they worked together briefly in the shelved film Zameen, where Sridevi was the lead actress with Vinod Khanna in the Ramesh Sippy directed movie, while newcomer Madhuri Dixit had a supporting role. Sadly, that film never saw the light of day. In the summer of 1990, Chiranjeevi decided to step into Bollywood, after being the top star of Telugu films, following the footsteps of his favourite co-star, Sridevi. Pratibandh was launched with great fanfare and invites to several Hindi film stars. Funnily enough, Chiranjeevi's co-star in the film--Juhi Chawla--was out of town working in another film, so Sridevi and Madhuri Dixit sharted the stage with him.

Superstars: Sridevi and Sanjay Dutt in Gumrah

Released on August 3, 1993, ten days before Sridevi's birthday, Gumrah may have had the top male star of the early '90s, Khalnayak himself, Sanjay Dutt, in the movie - but it was Sridevi's show all the way. A Dharma production, teen Karan Johar had said he was blown away by Sridevi's performance. Yet another one that got a lot of love from the press and fans, but not at award shows.

Fortunately, lack of awards didn't bother Sridevi at all, only rewards, i.e. box-office mattered to her. The trophies and trinkets that came along the way were fine, but there were no sleepless nights over the lack of honours in her palatial home in Madras/Chennai!

27 Years of Judaai: Sridevi, Urmila and Anil Kapoor's blockbuster!

27 Years of Judaai: Sridevi, Urmila and Anil Kapoor's blockbuster! A surprise hit of the 90s. Released early in the year, Feb of 1997, for those who remember, it had a slow start at the box-office but word of mouth, families went on mass to yank the film from a sleeper hit to a mega-hit.

The morality tale and dramedy was fueled by the performance of the leading ladies and the music. The last film of Anil Kapoor and Sridevi together, it was a culmination of a decade in movies with 12 films. They started with a home production that was a hit, they ended with one too, bracketing a stellar partnership on screen.
