Shahrukh Khan, 30, with Sridevi, 32, on the sets of the film Army (1996). A lifelong fan of the actress, Shahrukh did an extended cameo just to work with Sridevi in the film. As he said in several interviews after the success of DDLJ in the 1990s, he was the most wanted actor of the year, and even he bowed to 'the great Sridevi.' "She's already a legend..." he said on the sets of the film. "She's in complete command of her craft."

Many of these images are in the film Kaun Sachcha Kaun Jhoota, as Sridevi enters Rishi Kapoor's room. For fans of the two, it was a deja vu - Sridevi entering Rishi Kapoor's room in Chandni and finding a wall of pics.

The early days, it's hard to believe now, that Sridevi got sooo much criticism for her wardrobe, the press in the south went after her for the "dare bare" looks in the movie - which is so laughable now considering how much social mores have changed.  

When I see the film now, Sri just looks like a doll, perfect in every look, graceful and gorgeous, at age 20, wearing what the youth of that time were wearing, contemporary Indian fashion and all the razzmatazz of young Bollywood, bold colours, prints, eye candy for the cine-goers. Who remember the faceless, nameless hacks of that era who criticised the young aspiring actress endlessly? Sridevi is one for the ages.

Well, its certainly not her first movie, not even her first Hindi movie, but it is Sridevi's first bonafide super duper Hindi hit; Himmatwala. 

Sridevi, 20, became a pan-Indian super star with this rom com musical melodrama. Bollywood; why have one genre, when you can have them all in a movie?! 

Personally, not a huge fan of the film itself-don't pelt me with stones-but Sridevi is incredible in the song and dance routines and of course, Nainon main sapna still gets over a 100 million hits on YouTube.

Sridevi, Anil Kapoor and the kids of Mr.India

 

This week, social media has been coloured by vintage pics of Sridevi and Anil Kapoor from their beloved blockbuster, Mr.India 

35 years later, the debate rages on whether a sequel should be made - well, when Sridevi was alive, sure, it should have been made with the original cast of the film - and the same crew (those alive) but since there's no Sri, Amrish Puri, Saroj Khan, Laxmikanth Pyarelal or Anand Bakshi... why make a lesser film for the sake of a quick buck? 

Well, our voices and opinions are moot as Boney Kapoor, the film's original producer, sold the rights of the film for a lucrative three-film deal. So whether we, Sonam Kapoor-Ahuja, Anil Kapoor or Satish Kaushik or Shekhar Kapur, like it or not, it's happening...

Throwback Tuesday: Sridevi on the cover of India Today: Look Who's Back: 2012

Revealing her svelte figure, Sridevi on the cover of India Today on the eve of English Vinglish's release wasn't a comeback as much as it was a reminder that the Empress of Indian cinema can run circles around the stars and actresses of her time - anytime.

It was a fantastic feature - here in the archive - and a hot shoot! Look how fit Sridevi was at age 49! The legs, the curves, that smile, the fashion... 

Sigh.
