Sridevi on set, Sridevi on film: TBT to 1989. So pretty in pink. From the film Main Tera Dushman - her extended guest appearance. The film was supposed to have Jackie Shroff and Jaya Prada with a cameo by Sri - that kept getting extended as the phrase Main tera Dushman (the iconic phrase from Sridevi's superhit Nagina), the film title was so symbiotically linked to Sridevi. 

Rumours have it When the film was announced in May 1987, Dharmendra, Sumeet Saigal, Anita Raj and Sonam were in the film. They were replaced by Rajesh Khanna, Sunny Deol and Jaya Pradha. Sonam's role was scrapped entirely while Sridevi was added. 

Before Main tera Dushman (an average earner at best), film director Vijay Reddy had made Jawab Hum Denge also with Jackie Shroff and Sridevi.

When I think of Sridevi's quote, "I have no friends in the industry, I have no enemies either," I always think of the nebulous on-screen partnership of Sridevi and Sunny Deol. Co-stars and co-workers, not really friends.

Sridevi as a village belle in Main Tera Dushman

Sridevi in the film Main Tera Dushman (1989). Essentially an extended guest appearance in the film, the movie was a moderate success released in Feb 1989.

Though she wasn't the lead in the film and it was just a guest-appearance, the producers put Sridevi's picture in all the posters to cash in on her popularity and especially the title Main tera dushman which was essentially Sri's insanely popular song from the 1980s. Sunny Deol got roped in for a cameo in the film too. 

A guest appearance by both, Sridevi and Sunny Deol looked gorgeous in the 1980s together - even though they famously did not get along too well. Both introverts and shy, Sunny Deol did not care for his leading ladies taking over a film, which powerhouse Sridevi did more often than not. 

Their box office power meant that they were used greatly in the publicity of the (awful!) film Main Tera Dushman (1989). Tried to watch it recently but couldn't finish it, it just plods along in random tangents going nowhere... BUT Sunny and Sri are fun to watch in the songs. Sridevi in particular looks gorgeous and dances gracefully as she always did..

Ah the status quo...! Despite an all too brief appearance in the film Main Tera Dushman (1989), Sridevi featured prominently on the posters. Famed arch rival Jaya Prada was the lead actress in the movie yet in all the publicity features, Sridevi was prominently displayed.

With the unprecedented success of the song Main Teri Dushman, the title of the film was too closely associated with Sridevi's massive hit Nagina from 1986. How could the producers not cash in on Sri's national fame?

And the rivalry.. well, despite Jaya Prada's pool of talent (she was a fine actress, dancer and a legendary beauty), she didn't make much of a splash, unlike her Telugu contemporary who was the unquestioned queen of the marquee. At a time when actresses were listed and ranked via their box office power, clout and talent and beauty, Jaya Prada was never featured in any of the top lists. Sridevi simply ruled as the Number One star throughout the 80s.

Sridevi essentially had an extended cameo in the film - but they publicised the heck out of her presence in the movie! After all, she owned the title words from her memorable song and dance routine in Nagina - the association was such a given.
