Feroz Khan with Sridevi in Jaanbaaz: Swagger, Cinema, and Style: Honouring the Legacy of Feroz Khan

September 25, Bollywood turns back the clock to honour the birth anniversary of its quintessential swaggering showman, Feroz Khan.

Born in Bangalore, Khan single-handedly revolutionised Bollywood by introducing an unapologetic Western slickness, cowboy aesthetics, and unmatched high-octane glamour to the silver screen. Long before debonair anti-heroes became mainstream, he carried himself with an effortless swagger, signature Stetson hats, fine boots, and cigar-toting charisma that earned him the title of the Clint Eastwood of the East.

As a filmmaker and actor, Khan possessed an uncanny vision for casting the finest talent, effortlessly working with all the top leading ladies of the era. From Hema Malini in Dharmatma to Dimple Kapadia, Sridevi and Rekha in Janbaaz, he presented women with a stunning combination of raw sensuality and fierce dignity.

His creative relationship with Sridevi stood out as a stroke of visionary directing. Though Sridevi made only a brief special appearance in Janbaaz (1986), Khan capitalized on her unmatched stardom, sensuality and framed her exquisitely in the memorable song Har Kisi Ko Nahi Milta. Under his lens, Sridevi looked ethereal, draped in flowing sarees along wind-swept coastlines, creating a cinematic moment that remains etched in pop-culture history. When asked who was the sexiest heroine he worked with - he ruffled many feathers when he stated on record that Sridevi was the most beautiful - this after having worked with Mumtaz to Madhuri Dixit.

Khan operated with an enviable success ratio that few producers could match. Rather than overloading his filmography, he focused on lavish scale and quality, directing iconic blockbusters like Apradh, Dharmatma, Qurbani, and Janbaaz - the vast majority of which dominated the box office. He transformed Indian action cinema into a globe-trotting spectacle filled with fast cars, slick action, and unforgettable chartbusters.

Even in his later years, his memorable turn as RDX in Welcome proved that age could never dim his legendary swash-buckling style - Feroz Khan, one in a billion.

Remembering Feroz Khan on his death anniversary

Stylish actor and filmmaker Feroz Khan passed on this day back in 2009, age 69.

Feroz Khan was a huge Sridevi fan and praised her to the skies in interviews in the 1980s. She appeared in only film with hiim, briefly in Jaanbaaz. Her extended guest-appearance and song - Har kisi ko nahin milta - is the best thing in the movie.

Feroz Khan and Sridevi in Jaanbaaz (1986): White Sari Clad-siren Sridevi

Sridevi appears for less than 15 minutes in the film with her extended guest appearance. Her song Har kisiko nahin milta was a blockbuster on the charts and sensuous Sri was all the rage.

Soon after Feroz Khan died, Sridevi said in an interview, he had come to see her in the early 80s and spoke to her mother in Tamil and charmed the family into agreement. Sridevi rarely did guest spots in films, but she did it for the debonair Feroz Khan.

Sridevi, "I had accepted Jaanbaaz only because Feroz had promised to compensate me with a very good role in his next film."

Feroz Khan with Sridevi in Jaanbaaz (1986)

Producer and director Feroz Khan with Sridevi on the sets of Jaanbaaz. The song 'Har kisiko nahin milta' is too beautiful for words - made more stunning visually by Sri's enchanting presence. Having worked with all the top actresses in Bollywood [Hema Malini, Rekha, Dimple Kapadia and so on], when asked (by Filmfare) who he thought was the most stunning Indian actress of all time, he said simply. Sridevi.

Jaanbaaz had a casting coup of sorts in the '80s, Khan managed to get the top three actresses of the time into the same film - although none of them shared the same frame together in the movie. Though Dimple Kapadia was the lead, Rekha and Sridevi had memorable guest appearances in the film.

Feroz Khan was double Sri's age during the time of making of the film (he was 47, Sridevi was just 23!) but oddly, the two looked sooooo good together in film. Or perhaps it was the way the music and photography lulled us into believing it as such...

Sridevi and Feroz Khan in Janbaaz (1986)

Sridevi on the sets of Janbaaz (1986). She had an all too brief role, an extended guest-appearance that was possibly the best thing in the film. Including the mesmerising song, 'Har kisiko nahin milta'.

The posters had Sridevi, Rekha, Dimple Kapadia... but none of the actresses appeared together on screen.

Feroz persuaded me in Tamil: Sridevi

The mesmerizing Sridevi only did one film Janbaaz and that too a 10-minute role for Feroz Khan.

But what an impact! "I'm glad people still remember me in that brief role. It's all because of Mr Feroz Khan's presentation that I made an impact in Janbaaz," says Sridevi.

Arguably the only guest appearance in her entire career Janbaaz featured Sridevi in a song Har kisiki nahin milta yahan pyar lighting up the screen in an orange [red!] chiffon saree.

Recalls Sridevi, "At first I was hesitant because it was just a guest appearance. Also the presentation seemed a little too sensuous for my personality. But when Mr Khan spoke to me in my mother tongue I was immediately convinced. Yes, I was as surprised as you are. But he spoke fluent Tamil... He was a very classy gentleman and his cinema reflected that. I was very proud to be in Janbaaz. It proved it's not about the length of the role but the impact."

Sighs Sri, "It's sad we've lost an actor and filmmaker who defined style and sophistication in our films. Where are the filmmakers and filmmakers like him?"

Feroz Khan with Sridevi on set: Fardeen Khan with Sridevi at a party: Khan fanclub of the Goddess Sri

She was in Feroz Khan's film Jaanbaaz for just a few minutes but they were the best parts of the movie. The song Har kisi Ko Nain Milta resonates till date - the chart buster with the profound lyrics and lilting music is a classic for the ages...

Feroz Khan famously worked with all the leading ladies of Bollywood - when asked, he said the sexiest actress he worked with EVER, he answered simply, it was Sridevi.
