Rare Still: Kunal Goswami, Rakesh Bedi and Sridevi in Kalaakaar (1983)

Rare Still: Kunal Goswami, Rakesh Bedi and Sridevi in Kalaakaar (1983)

A teen romance about music and love - this tragedy tanked at the box-office ending the career of the male lead. Sridevi, with 13 releases that year was completely unfazed by the film's fate at the box-office as nothing could stop the rise of the supernova.

Notable for its songs and a gorgeous young Sridevi, the tragedy tanked at the box-office. While it halted the hero's career, the leading lady was unstoppable.

Released 39 years ago today, the song Neele Neele Ambar endures.

Sridevi and Kunal Goswami in Kalaakaar (1983)

Sridevi and Kunal Goswami

Released in the same year as Himmatwala, Sridevi and Kunal Goswami (son of Manoj Kumar - nepotism didn't begin or end in 2018!) in Kalaakar (1983). Released in December, the film with its tragic story line was a flop. The music and the leading lady, were a hit.

Yesteryear's legends all tried to launch their sons and daughters with about 90% failure rate as actors/stars. Kunal found success in business that he didn't on screen. At some point the delusion has to evaporate and reality sink in; either you have it or don't.

Sridevi in Kalaakaar (1983)

At age 20, Sridevi was rocking contemporary early 1980s fashion in Bollywood throughout the film. Though to be honest, she looked better in the saris and salwars

(L) Sridevi with music director Bappi Lahiri. The music of the film was composed by Kalyanji–Anandji - Bappi da had a brief cameo on the film.

Above: Sridevi with Kunal Goswami from the film Kalaakaar (1983). The actor was tall and sincere but there was obviously something missing as entire filmography is full of flops. Even Kumar Gaurav gave 'a' hit.

Launch of Kalaakaar in 1983: Sridevi with Kunal Goswami

Son of Bollywood legend Manoj Kumar, Kunal Goswami tried his luck in Bollywood too - with a dream launch with the rising star of the time, a young, 20-year-old Sridevi, back in 1983. Despite great songs and an interesting story line about the struggles of a musician, the film flopped. While the actor tried his luck again and again without much box-office success, luminescent Sridevi orbited fame with utter ease.

Here are rarely seen images of the young pair at the audio launch of Kalaakaar. Rare pics of Sridevi with her mother Rajeshwari and sister Sreelatha at the event below.

Excerpt: Sridevi and Kunaal Goswami, stars of Kalaakar, at a CBS function to mark release of the music of the film.

Sridevi and Kunal Goswami in Kalaakaar (1983)

Gorgeous songs and a young, scintillating Sridevi makes this '80s musical, Kalaakaar (1983) (almost) memorable. One of Sridevi's earlier Hindi films with Kunal Goswami, whose career on screen never took off unlike his stunning co-star.

Best remembered for songs like Khoye khoye rahe teri rahon mein and the awesome, (awesome!) Kishore Kumar number Neele neele ambar par.

Released 9 Dec, 1983
