37 years of Aulad: Jeetendra, Sridevi combo's 80s blockbuster

Released 37 years ago, Aulad was the 6th biggest hit of the year 1987. The magical alchemy of Sridevi, Jeetendra and Jaya Prada, it was a melodrama, soap-operatic  musical with the biggest stars of their time. One of the last few films Sri did with Jeetendra, and the last one with arch nemesis Jaya Prada. 

Before the avalanche Indian soap operas and multiple channels, movies like this did well.

Today - 8th January - is the birth anniversary of the British-Indian actor Saeed Jaffrey. A wonderful actor equally adept at drama as he was in comedy. 

He was brilliant in Shatranj ke Khiladi and there are several British TV shows and films he was great in - but his comedy in Chaalbaaz with Sridevi remains a personal fav.

Looking gorgeous in her traditional Bengali red border white sari, she looks so beautiful. Also in pics, actors Vinod Khanna and Saeed Jaffery on the sets of the same film.

The tragedy of this film - and there are many travesties - is that it had such an incredible, gorgeous cast and a vast pool of talent but the movie went nowhere fast. A hodge-podge of genres, songs... it was bizarre. It will test the patience of the most ardent Sridevi or Vinod Khanna fan - skip through to just watch the songs. Sridevi on-screen and off screen - stunning! The film released just weeks after the runaway success of Chandni, so it landed on screen with great expectations... Alas!
