Mithun and Sridevi camp it up: 35 years of Bollywood hit Waqt ki Awaz

Mithun and Sridevi camp it up in Waqt ki Awaz (1988)

The fifth biggest hit of 1988 (Tezaab took top slot that year), there was no denying the on-screen magic of Mithun and Sridevi films. The most requested by mostly Russian fans. We don't get it... but hey, it takes all kinds.

Personally not a fan of three of the four films they did together, but there's no denying the box office appeal of their cine magic.

Mithun and Sridevi: Four films and endless tabloid copy

Mithun and Sridevi: Four films and endless tabloid copy.

They appeared in three blockbusters and a critically acclaimed film. Then they stopped acknowledging the other's existence.

Happy Birthday Mithun da: Indian actor turns 72

Is it a toothpaste ad? Lol. Perfect smiles of Mithun and Sridevi from a still from their film.

Today, Mithun Chakraborty turns 72!

Of the four films they did together, three were superhits.

And oddly enough, their best film, their first film together Jaag Utha Insan was the only good one! And their only flop.

Go figure.

Glittering Sridevi with Mithun Chakraborty in Waqt ki Awaz (1988)

Sridevi on the sets of Waqt Ki Awaz (1988). Stills from the song "Tu bhi bekraar mein bhi bekraar..." where Sridevi danced up a storm with Mithun Chakraborty.

Sridevi experimenting with her looks and fashion in this gold and black ensemble for the song.

Many fans on Facebook and twitter have commented how much they loved these two as a pair - esp fans from Russia and Estonia.

Amazing how far Hindi cinema reached throughout the 1980s. During the cold war, Hollywood, well, American movies were banned in Russia - so Bollywood did exceedingly well. You'd be surprised how many rare images of Sridevi we have on this site from various Russian - not Indian - fans of Sridevi.

Mithun Chakbraborthy and Sridevi in Waqt ki Awaz (1988): Box office Hit

Sridevi with Mithun Chakraborty in the 80s flick, Waqt Ki Awaz.

Er, like the wardrobe, the movie was not good - but then we can say that about several Hindi films from Bollywood in that gauche era. The movie did stellar business at the box-office however (go figure!), as it was the fifth highest grossing film of 1988!

The songs were a chart-buster - and on a side note, tragically, the film featured the swansong of the great Kishore Kumar - who recorded a song for the film a day before his death, with Asha Bhosle. What we mostly remember from that film was however was the song  "Pyar Chahiye Kitni Baar" by Sudesh Bhosle and Alisha Chinai (who most memorably sang the iconic Kate nahin kathe for Sridevi in Mr.India).

Here are a series of pics from the sets of that song - Mithun channeling some vintage MJ looks in that all leather ensemble.
