Released with little to no fanfare, Harmesh Malhotra's Heer Ranjha was released on 4 September 1992... according to Wikipedia, but "Released on August 5, 1992" according to Tips (which released the music!). 

Either way, the film was no great shakes that we have to be fastidious about about details. There are a few things that stand out, one or two songs and Sridevi's dances and costumes, the popularity of the film astounds me as it definitely has a cult following - especially for those fond of the fable.

Sridevi in a sari looking drop dead gorgeous. Hardcore Sridevi fans will note, this is the look Sridevi has in the penultimate scene in Chandni as she steps out to marry Vinod Khanna. 

The hair's more decked up in the shot, with flowers and fabric - these pics were taken from the sets of the film.

Released on 8 May 1992, Amitabh Bachchan and Sridevi as the overdressed bride and groom in the 90s epic, Khuda Gawah. 

This Hindi movie was truly grand, epic... meant to be seen on the BIG, BIG SCREEN!

Released on April 17, 1987, Aulad was one of the biggest hits of the year.

Before there were daily soaps and dramas, there were Sridevi-Jeetendra-Jaya Prada movies. High drama, high emotions, "women's pictures"! Morning and afternoon shows with discounts for ladies, the movies were made quickly (or remade quickly as it were -- most were Tamil/Telugu/Malayalam remakes, the petri dish testing ground for big-budget Bollywood movies!), inexpensively made (apart from the salary of the sars!) and released with efficiency to be instant hits. The films were shot at a killer pace too - Jeetendra once mentioned, in 28 days he could churn out a film. 

These were not high concept, thoughtful art movies, but morality tales and melodrama made purely to entertain the masses-- and it worked. And how! As we've listed before, the lucrative five years and over a dozen films together of Jeetendra and Sridevi made a lot of money for the industry.

Every actress at some point has had to dress up as a bride in traditional red for a film scene, over-accessorised, dripping in gold, festooned with flowers... 

By the time they eventually do get married, wonder if they are as excited to wear the ceremonial garb having done so innumerable times in fake temples on film sets under the burning arc lights of Filmistan.

Sridevi and Jeetendra as a bride and groom in Sone Pe Suhaga: Their last film together

Sridevi, 25, and Jeetendra, 46, as a bride and groom in Sone Pe Suhaga in 1988. 

The last film with co-star Jeetendra, Sridevi ended a long and fruitful collab with one of her most frequent co-stars and friends with this hit Hindi film. 

By 1988, it didn't matter who was Sridevi's co-star was and as her sun rose and Jeetendra's light dimmed (a slew of ill-timed flop films), she went on to work with other actors and aligned herself with directors who focused on her role more than her male counterpart. 

Decades later, most of the films haven't aged well.. but the song and dance routines remain fun and frothy.

Sridevi did so many bridal scenes and her endless array of red saris, we really should do a collage of the innumerable shots of Sridevi sitting on the mandap as a shy, blushing bride. 

Recently read some anecdotal feature that Raninikanth was thinking of proposing to Sridevi back in the day but was dissuaded by cosmic signs. Somehow this became headline in print - btw, during the reign of Sridevi we allllll thought we could/would/should propose to Sridevi, she was the nation's crush. No one stopped the press on such declarations or fantasies however. But then, it must have been a slow news day.
