Sridevi in and as Banjaran (1991)

Personally, not a huge fan of Banjaran but it has such a cult following. Reports online on the success of the movie are decidedly mixed; I have magazines from the early 90s that called the movie a flop, but have an inkling the movie more than recuperated as the voluminous songs and dances were such a rage, the film has such a massive following till date and there's a certain strata of society that loved the reincarnation theme, costumes, the high-pitch melodrama...

The costumes of an Indian Gypsy (ie Banjaran) were a bit of a hodgepodge mess. Just everything thrown at the wall and see what sticks, but then you see the credits and realise, a motley crew of people worked in the film including Leena Daru, Neeta Lulla.... and it doesn't look like it was done in a cohesive manner so nothing matched and worked well together. The hair, accessories, colours, cuts are all over the place... And the movie has a dated 80s feel to it. A few good songs but a few blaring... I don't know. And yet have seen it a few times just to see Sridevi. Again. And again.

We have a massive archive of images and info on the film here

When bad edits happen to great actresses: Sridevi pics on Social Media

The good and the bad of edits on social media - up to you to decide which is good, which is meh.

Personally, we liked Sridevi as she was! Without the 'jhankar beats' added on to her images through face apps.

This from a late 80s shoot Sridevi did for G magazine in Mumbai.

Entire series - the original - is in the archive here.

Sridevi's G magazine centrefold

Sridevi's colourful centrefold for G magazine. Miss getting that large A3 sized mag. Gorgeous large pictures, great editorials, it had really smart film journalism. So shockingly lacking today. And the magazine was fun!

Sridevi on the sets of Chandra Mukhi

Sridevi and her over-the-top costumes and colours on the sets of Chandra Mukhi (1993)

Even for the biggest Sridevi fan, it's tough viewing - however, there are many children who loved the fantasy movie.

Photographer and legend Gautam Rajadhyaksha, "Sridevi is overpowering": Photographer and Muse

Sridevi, well, "Sreedevi" in Cine Blitz magazine in the early 90s.

Legendary photographer Gautam Rajadhyaksha on working with Sridevi, "When you refer to the best that I've shot, I guess it's a mixture of looks, personality, presentation, posture, physique, figure, gait, fashion consciousness... in short an overall impact. This is the first time I'm caught off-guard, by being asked the same question but from a different angle!

...as grace Sridevi is overpowering. Tall, with long limbs, her torso and legs are perfect. Clothes sit on her as if they were designed with her as the mannequin in mind. Then again, she has hand movements which are riveting. Western clothes apart, Sridevi is admirable even in a sari. Not too many of our current stars look good in one."

This 90s shoot for Cine Blitz.
