The costumes of Roop Ki Rani Choron Ka Raja: Sridevi worked those feathers and sequins

A grandiose mix of the ostentatious and kitsch, Sridevi made the ludicrous look incredible in the costume extravaganza that was Roop ki Rani Choron Ka Raja.

The ostrich feathers, the shimmering polyesters, the sheer and the lace, the gold, the diamontes, the rhinestone studded ensembles, the faux and the real feathers, the garish colour combos.... There's a "fashion show" in the middle of the title song that raises more eyebrows than applause... a glamorous turn in the the theatre of the absurd.

And here's the oddity of it all; Sridevi made it all work. Plausible. Yeah sure why-not? It's Sridevi!

The movie tanked famously at the box-office - possibly the biggest flop of the '90s on account of its mammoth budget (made for nearly l0 crore, it recovered barely three) and production time (launched in 1987, released in 1993!).

On re-watching on cable, its the standard masala fare that isn't as bad as it was projected to be. There are hundreds of other movies that were worse but none had the expectation of this epic film that was mounted so lavishly.

The only parts that sizzle in the movie are with Sridevi in it - and perhaps the train robbery scene. Other than that, it's all deja pu (we've seen this s*** before!).

The movie is in our collection - just for the Roop Ki Rani....

Sridevi in a Kaftaan

Early 1980s shot when everyone wore kaftaans. And er... still do at home!

Sridevi's hotel shoot, where she famously stayed for a decade!

The black and gold gown... looks elegant and comfortable! And yet Sridevi makes it look regal.
