Jaya Prada: Turning a Blind Eye to Sridevi's Superstardom

Found the above two pics so amusing, Jaya's eyes shut in every shot. Jaya Prada: Turning a Blind Eye to Sridevi's Superstardom!

She can try to rewrite history as much as she likes but we recall all the things she (and her brother said) about Sridevi. Well, she finally made up with Sridevi in her later years but we never forget.

They really were great actresses, rarely did the audience know what went on behind the scenes till years later!

Sridevi and Jaya Prada in Tohfa

Sridevi and Jaya Prada in Tohfa.

Released 40 years ago, the movie was a smash hit - the biggest hit of 1984 in fact.

A tribute to the skills of the two Telugu leading ladies, not for one second on screen can you see the ambivalence they felt for the other-- when it was palpable off screen. They acted as sisters and best-friends in several movies; 8 Hindi and 4 Telegu.

Sridevi and Poonam Dhillon: Rare Pic; 5 films together as contemporaries and costars: The listicle

Sridevi and Poonam Dhillon were contemporaries and appeared in several films together, often as sisters.

Poonam was a year older than Sridevi and debuted in the fantastic film Trishul (1978). In 1979 she hit Bollywood with a bang with the smash Yash Chopra hit Noorie - memorable for its scintillating music. In 1979, Sridevi appeared and disappeared from Bollywood in the rarely seen film Solva Saawan. Sri came back with a bang in 1983 with Himmatwala and never looked back.

The 80s contemporaries, Poonam was a popular actress but never a contender for the Number One spot. As she herself said in interviews, she had no ambition to be the Numero Uno either. A pretty actress with great hair, great music in her films, amazing 80s fashion... she appeared in many family friendly movies throughout her career.

Sridevi and Poonam appeared in five films together;
  1. Karma (1986)
  2. Himmat aur Mehnat (1987)
  3. Sone pe Suhaaga (1988)
  4. Pathar ke Insan (1990)
  5. Judaai (1997)
Today, Poonam Dhillon turns 60 and we with the lovely actress many happy returns of the day.

Excerpt: Sridevi talks about other Indian actresses: Madhuri Dixit, Hema Malini, Karishma Kapoor, Juhi Chawla...

Q: If you talk to today's actresses they say that their ideal is Sridevi. Like Babita Kapoor was telling me the day Karishma Kapoor (L) dances like Sridevi, she'll think her daughter has done herself proud.

Sridevi: Hey God, I'm really walking on air with this compliment. It's a great thing to happen to me.

Q: Even Juhi Chawla says she finds you amazing. Everybody wants to be like you. It would be very interesting to know what you thought of them for a change. How would you assess the heroines in the industry? For instance, Madhuri Dixit?

Sridevi: She's very good. A very good dancer. When you see her films it's like watching an experienced woman. It's really great to see her.

Q: I'm allowing you to steal one role from Madhuri Dixit and Juhi Chawla. Which role would you steal?

Sridevi: It's difficult to answer that. Because I have done something similar to what they have done, if not the same...

Q: Okay, what about the older heroines?

Sridevi, The role Nargis did in Mother India, Hema Malini...  the film where she was negative... um...  Laal Pathar. (R)

Interview from 1994.
