Excerpt from a magazine interview in the 1980s with Mr.India's director Shekhar Kapur, "Mr. India's success is frightening because of the problems it will create for my next film."

RIP Shashi Kapoor: Sridevi tweets condolence message for Indian legend

13h13 hours ago
A great actor, a charming & happy soul, an inspiring humanitarian. We will miss you Shashi ji. RIP

Sridevi posts on twitter. Sridevi and Shashi Kapoor acted together in the film Gair Kanooni - which was released in March 1989.  Shashi Kapoor tried to get Sridevi to star in his directorial venture Ajooba (1991), but she was overbooked those years and had to refuse. Dimple Kapadia went on to do the film.

Sridevi tweets her condolences as Jayalalitha is laid to rest

Jayalalitha with young Sridevi

As a child star, Sridevi acted with Jayalalitha in five films. While Sridevi went on to become the Queen of Bollywood, Jayalalitha left the film industry (with over 140 movies in several languages to her credit) and went on to join, well, rule politics in her signature style.

Most memorably, Sridevi acted with Jayalalitha in Thirumangalyam, Kandan Karunai and Adi Parashakti.

As we just heard the news of the passing of Jayalalitha on Dec 5, we have been tracing the responses online. Fans posted these images on social media and we've collected the snippets and pics - related to Sridevi. Obv.

E.g. we found this archival image of the actress Jayalalitha (very different from the politico) and young Sridevi as Lord Muruga. Sridevi acted with Jayalalitha in Aadhi Parasakthi (directed by KS Gopalakrishnan) which was a huge success in its time.

Over the past few decades, the two met on and off when Sridevi visited Chennai. During the release of Gumraah, Jayalalitha was doing a hunger strike in Tamil Nadu over some issue and Sridevi went to visit her -  much to the chagrin of her detractors, and banned the film on several screens. Sridevi went on to state that she visited the Chief Minister on a personal basis and had nothing to do with politics but, her defense fell onto deaf ears. Well. Such is the irrational world of politics in India.

Puli: Manish Malhotra's looks for Sridevi

The one and only as the EMPRESS in PULI' loved working on her look in this film like always

UPDATE: Hmm. Fans of social media have created this collage and found certain (rather obvious) similarities between the villainous characters essayed by the leading ladies of Hollywood, namely Julia Roberta and Charlize Theron, and Sridevi in Puli. Hmm.  We're just going to leave this here and let you judge for yourself....

with Gauri Shinde

We are desperately trying to not look too much into this adorable pic... Is Gauri Shinde - possibly the most awarded, rewarded, recognised (deservedly) debutante director of all-time in Indian film history - working on yet another project with Sridevi in mind?!

If there's a God in cinematic heaven...

Sridevi tweets:

On women's day with my favorite woman!

Manish Malhotra with Sridevi: Designer and muse: Best of Friends: Manish tweets about working with Sridevi

Sridevi and Manish Malhotra

Had it not been for the first few tweets by designer (to the stars!) Manish Malhotra on social media, we would have remained suspicious of all news stating that Sridevi was back in a Tamil films. For decades we've heard similar news stories and been sadly disappointed. But once we knew Manish was on set with Sri... whoaaa! Joyous!

Manish did costumes for Sridevi in several films and we are more than sure that she'll look drop-dead-gorgeous in the upcoming film. We. Cannot. Wait. But, we will!!

See the long archive of Sridevi with Manish Malhotra here.

Madam in New York: Sridevi is a sensation in Japan

Sridevi in Roop Ki Rani, Choron Ka Raja (1993)

Off to Tokyo, Japan for super premiere of English Vinglish dubbed in Japanese.

Sridevi tweeted this pic (a still from her memorable comic scene in Roop Ki Rani...) before she zoomed off to Japan. Too cute.  In a ravishing red kimono with the most flawless transformation by the finest make-up man, nay, artist in India, Mickey Contractor, the South Indian actress morphed into a Japanese princess by sheer skill and brush.

We hope the film - which translates to "Madam in New York" in Japanese, does extremely well as it has in Hong Kong, Macau, China, Germany and the like. An unprecedented success in India upon release in 2012, its heart-warming to hear Sridevi's film is doing well wherever released.
