Sridevi: The Song that was cut from the overripe Roop ki Rani Choron ka Raja

Main ek sone ki murat hoon was an ok song, but Sridevi looked so cute performing it - alas, the song was cut from the released version of the film, Roop ki Rani Choron ka Raja.

Shot in Amsterdam, Sridevi prances around a garden trying to comically seduce a reluctant Anil Kapoor. She's after the jewellery he stole - and he's aware of her less than honourable intentions! There are several amazing scenes and songs in the film - it just didn't have a cohesive thread.

Jeetendra and Sridevi in Balidaan

Jeetendra and Sridevi in Balidaan - one of the many hits these two superstars of the 1980s delivered in Bollywood.

The stars steam things up in scenes for their usual song and dance routine...

TBT: This critique of Sridevi's singing for Chandni back in 1989: Sri joins the Off-Key Club!

TBT: This critique of Sridevi's singing for Chandni back in 1989:

Fandom isn't slavery. We are hardcore Sridevi fans - obv -  that run this site and FB fan club but it doesn't mean we are immune to Sridevi's goofs either. There are smatterings of bad film choices, wardrobe malfunctions and makeup frights, leaving amazing films for questionable reasons and a few political affiliations that made us frown.

We also had a billion reasons to love her - as she indeed was one in a billion.

We aren't looking for a saint, we're looking at the actress Sridevi was - and entirely in a league of her own.

So its tough but not impossible to write a critique of her films, performances, roles, choices on screen... Though, we mostly choose not to.

However, her singing... hmm.

During the peak of her fame in 1989, we had difficulty digesting the title song of Chandni by its otherwise scintillating leading lady. The critics back then had a field day. Excerpt from Filmfare;

Sri joins the Off-Key Club!

Excerpt: "Sridevi's' attempt at 'singing' , excuse me while I splutter.. in Chandni meri Chandni reminds you how skilled Sharda, Hemlata, Shabbir and the other members of the off-key club are."

In later years, even Sridevi had a good laugh at the error of her ways, be it in song or film, dance or costume. We all gotta take the 80s with a pinch of salt...

Ah its ok. Aaakhir Chaand main bhi daag hai...

Aaj Kal Yaad Kuch Aur Rahata Nahin: Sridevi and Rishi Kapoor's memorable Mohammed Aziz song

A new appreciation for the song, its lyrics esp in the absence of Rishi Kapoor and Sridevi today. In fact, all those involved with this are no longer with us; be it the choreographer Saroj Khan, singer Mohammed Aziz, music director Laxmikant, the film's producer/director Harmesh Malhotra...

Such a glorious lyrical song.

Sridevi and Venkatesh: Song Jaamu Rathiri from Kshana Kshanam (1991): With subtitles!

Sridevi and Venkatesh: Song Jaamu Rathiri from Kshana Kshanam (1991): With subtitles!

Rarely do comedies reward their stars with Best Actress trophies - but then Sridevi was no ordinary actress. Sridevi picked up a fine collection of awards for her gentle, comedic take as a hapless, if not helpless, girl on the run from the mafia. She's so cute in the film.

The moment I fell in love with Sridevi and Bollywood: In one of the worst films ever made: Naaka Bandi

The movie is so bad it fails on all levels - incredible considering the star wattage and actors involved in the making of the film Naaka Bandi (1990). Poor direction, shoddy editing, a bad script - if there was a script! The movie was made in that na kaagaz na kalam, na laaj na sharam era when dialogues were being penned furiously by writers in the corner as stars waited on set with the makeup on. BTW we have an entire gallery of images of simply Sridevi waiting on set, often looking deeply frustrated at the inefficiency and haphazard way movies were made in the 1980s, compared to the factory-like work ethic of Madras talkies and Hyderabad production houses.

And yet, I knew, when I fell in love with Sri. During the preposterous meta-song Main Lagti Hoon Sridevi lagti hoon, sung by Aasha Bhosle with impish glee (as only a quinquagenarian can) and danced and emoted with Lucille Ball-esque cheek by 'the' Sridevi. Choreographed by Saroj Khan, of course.

She's sooooo funny in the song, her takes on Bollywood icons are so spot on - its tongue-in-cheek without being rude or offensive. Have seen the song a thousand times just to get a glimpse of Sri's myriad expressions...

To be so good in a bad film? Only Sridevi could pull it off.

Sridevi's first Hindi film: Solva Saawan

Solva Saawan came and went with the wind. However, Sridevi remained forever. Seen here in her debut Hindi film, Solva Saawan.
