Sridevi in and as Chandni (1989)

The looks were impeccable and so was the delicate styling... Gorgeous Sridevi.

The Filmfare centrefold below was such a rage in the 80s.

Sridevi in a black lace sari

The edit is... too much. Original Sridevi was strikingly beautiful.

Sridevi looked so elegant in this gossamer sari look in Chandni. Of the 68 or so looks she had in the movie, a young designer could do an entire collection inspired by the fashion icon who channeled the best of the 1980s in the epic Yash Chopra romance/musical.

Sridevi in that black chiffon sari in Chandni

Sridevi in that black chiffon sari in Chandni!

Before Yash Raj comes at me; I've bought the Chandni VHS tape (official one), then the Laser Disc, and then the DVD. The CDs, the HMV audio cassette and, for a brief moment, the mini-disc too. I've spent more money on Chandni than any other film... And of course its now 2025 and I can't find any of the above - and have to watch the movie again, paying for it on OTT platform!

Mithun and Sridevi

The hottest topic of tabloid fever dreams; Mithun and Sridevi. 1980s were all about these two superstars.

The agony and eustasy of Judaai (1997): Sridevi dominates

The agony and eustasy of Judaai (1997): Sridevi dominates the publicity stills and posters of the movie - as was common in many a Sridevi (esp one produced by Boney Kapoor!) film.

Sridevi's career on pause in 97 could have been predicted. She stopped signing films earlier despite lucrative offers, started returning signing amounts to major films and took a 'pregnant' pause to an otherwise stellar career that saw the ups and downs of box-office and favour as all part of her lengthy stride.

Sridevi fans in 1997 had a lot of defensive responses ready for Sri that year but she went out with a double whammy, box-office success and critical acclaim. Once an icon, forever an icon. Despite the slings and barbs of many an armchair critic.

The former co-stars (Shatrughan Sinha and Sridevi worked in Sherni together back in 1988) presented the Best Actress award. Before the winner was announced, Sinha heaped praises on Sridevi.

Today, Dec 9, the actor turns 78. We wish him well.

She knew she had a winner at hand; that beaming smile for the mother of all comebacks.

Sridevi on the sets of Chandni: The elegant black chiffon sari

Sridevi on the sets of Chandni in a black lace/chiffon sari, with diamond accessories.

While she was a resplendent vision in white in the early part of the film, Chandni's sombre mature self in the latter half was reflected in her different, milder, sedate wardrobe as she became a woman of the world post heart-break and heart-ache.

Chandni is Sridevi's alter-ego on film - as Sridevi has said in interviews, this was the character closest to her real self.

While many remember the film for its mesmerising song and dances, the frothy romance, the glorious visuals of Switzerland, Sridevi gave one of her most dignified, mature and elegant performances in the 1989 box-office smash. The confrontation scene with Rishi Kapoor near the end is one for the history books, as both stars were absolutely faultless.

Sridevi in a lace sari: Sridevi's chic look for Chandni (1989)

Stunning Sridevi on the sets of Chandni (1989). For a movie most memorable for her white ensembles, she looked dropped-dead gorgeous in this one small scene (well throughout!) in a black lace-y sari in the movie.

This is at the peak of her power, beauty, fame, fortune... 1989 was her definitive year.
