14 of Sridevi's Best Tamil Films: According to her Fans

"I love Tamil cinema," said Sridevi in her interview with The Hindu. And clearly, Tamil cinema has loved in turn, this sensational actress and given her myriad roles to showcase her versatility. Many critics have stated that to watch Sridevi’s finest performances and challenging roles, one needs to bypass her resplendent, glamorous Bollywood career and focus on the complexities and dramas of the regional films she starred in (often with superstar Rajinikanth and thespian Kamal Haasan).

In fact, she had better roles in Tamil and Malayalam cinema (and perhaps in Telugu) than most of her Hindi movies. Though clearly, she did more Telugu film - her mother tongue - but they were more fun, commercial films than serious fare to showcase her infinite talents.

The Telugu industry was undoubtedly a film factory for her - in 1982, Sridevi appeared in 17 Telugu films! That's not all, she also appeared in 5 Tamil films; ie in the Southern belt, you can't avoid a Sridevi movie as she was averaging two films a month!  We are working on her best Telugu films but that's a serious undertaking. Her Best Hindi films was easy to pin down, as they were either obvious mega-hits or the two odd, underrated gems.

Hindi films may have given her national recognition, pan-Indian fame, and fortune, but the actor was born—or shall we rephrase that as, the born actress was nurtured in Tamil and Telugu films (not to forget her roles in Malayalam cinema early on too).

We asked fans of Sridevi online, “What are Sridevi’s best Tamil films?” The knowledgeable, lifelong fans responded with the following titles for us to view:

1. Padinaru Vayadinilai (aka 16 Vayathinile) (1977)
The original version of Solva Sawan (with Amol Palekar) 16 Vayathinile was a huge hit. The Hindi version was a huge flop. Clearly, something got lost in translation. In a rural village, 16-year-old Mayil (Sridevi), an ambitious schoolgirl dreaming of becoming a teacher, is loved by the kind but disabled orphan Chappani (Kamal Haasan). She falls for a charming urban veterinarian (Rajinikanth), who seduces and abandons her. The film explores her heartbreak, resilience, and eventual growth.

2. Moondru Mudichu (1977)
The story revolves around Selvi (Sridevi), an 18-year-old college student, and two roommates—Balaji (Kamal Haasan) and Prasath (Rajinikanth)—who both fall in love with her. It becomes a romantic thriller as hidden motives, jealousy, and manipulation surface among the trio. The memes online have given away the surprise ending...  which has mostly been ruined by meme culture today.

3. Gayathri (1977)
Directed by R. Pattabhiraman and starring Rajinikanth and Sridevi in lead roles, the film has a twisted thriller plot with a distinctly adult theme. Rajinikanth plays a cruel husband to Sridevi, a rich bon vivant who lives with his sister (Rajasulochana) and a young housemaid in Chennai. Under an arranged marriage, the simple girl from Trichy moves to the city. Upon arriving at her husband’s house, Sridevi is shocked to discover the nefarious life of the duo.

With numerous plot twists and tragedies, a young Sridevi acts well beyond her years as a troubled housewife. Based on the story “Gayathri” by Sujatha Rangarajan, the melodrama remains a huge ratings hit even when screened today.

4. Sigappu Rojakkal (1978)
Kamal Haasan plays Dileep, a seemingly respectable industrialist who harbors a dark secret: he seduces women, kills them, and buries them in his garden (where red roses bloom over the graves). Sridevi plays Sarada, the woman he genuinely falls for, leading to intense psychological drama and suspense.

5. Kalyanaraman (1979)
The film follows Kalyanam (Kamal Haasan), son of a tea estate owner, who is duped and murdered by a gang seeking the property. He returns as a ghost to protect his family and loved ones, blending comedy, romance, and supernatural elements.

6. Varumayin Niram Sigappu (1980)

It revolves around three educated but unemployed young men in Delhi struggling with poverty. Kamal Haasan plays the idealistic Rangan, who refuses to compromise his principles. He meets and falls for Devi (Sridevi), a stage actress from a struggling family, in this socially conscious drama about integrity and hardship.

7. Johnny (1980)
Rajinikanth plays a dual role as Johnny, a con artist trying to pay off his father’s debts, and his lookalike Vidyasagar. Sridevi is Archana, a popular singer who falls for Johnny. When the lookalike commits a crime, Johnny is implicated, leading to a gripping crime thriller.

8. Guru (1980)
The story centers on a philanthropist (Kamal Haasan) who secretly operates as a vigilante. He falls in love with Sujatha (Sridevi), the niece of a top police official, while balancing his dual life of social good and justice. A huge hit that... Kamal Haasan hated! While discussing his films, in retrospectives, the actor said the film was "crap." Sridevi has rarely mentioned the film when discussing her filmography, this Tamil hit or the Hindi blockbuster she did with Mithun. Guru is in this list mostly because it was a huge success and a different movie for its time.

9. Meendum Kokila (1981)

Sridevi won her first Filmfare Award for Best Actress for this Tamil film in 1982. Kokila (Sridevi), a devoted wife and mother, fights to win back her husband Subramaniam (Kamal Haasan) after he becomes infatuated with a film actress (Deepa). It is a poignant drama about love, jealousy, and reconciliation. Fun fact, originally the film actress was played by Rekha - who walked out of the film after shooting for a few days. Furious Kamal Haasan never worked the actress after that incident.

10. Pokkiri Raja (1982)
Rajinikanth plays Ramesh, a hardworking man framed for murder. In prison, he encounters his lookalike, and together they work to uncover the real killers and clear his name. Sridevi as a morally steadfast girl shines in the dramatic scenes and monologue about right and wrong.

11. Thanikkattu Raja (1982)
A young mechanic (Rajinikanth) falls in love with a rich girl (Sridevi). Their relationship faces opposition and turmoil due to class differences and family interference, testing their bond through dramatic events.

12. Moondram Pirai (1982)

The original version of Sadma with the same cast and crew. Yet another film where Sridevi deserved to win multiple awards but lost out to her contemporaries. The Crescent Moon Comes on the Third Day  [literaly translation of the title!] was written and directed by Balu Mahendra, starring Kamal Haasan and Sridevi. Young collegiate Sridevi on holiday meets with an accident and looses all memory. She's found in a brothel and rescued by Kamal Haasan who runs away with her to Ooty and takes care of her. When she recovers by the end, her retroactive amnesia is forgotten, and she forgets the existence of Kamal. The ending will haunt you for years.

Ilaiyaraaja composed the music. Kamal Haasan won the National Film Award for Best Actor for his role as Srinivas. Balu Mahendra also handled cinematography and won the National Film Award for it. It was a blockbuster that completed a 329-day run at the box office. Sridevi and Kamal Haasan are incredible - Sridevi shot the film when she was 18 and is staggeringly great. How a simple storyline can influence the hearts of millions is the beauty of this movie.

13. Vazhve Maayam (1982)
Raja (Kamal Haasan), a rich and spoiled young man, relentlessly pursues and falls in love with air hostess Devi (Sridevi). After winning her over, complications arise when he learns he has a terminal illness and hides it from her, leading to emotional drama and misunderstandings.

14. Adutha Vaarisu (1983)
A conniving relative seeks to control family wealth after the heiress goes missing. A bounty hunter (Rajinikanth) is hired to find a girl (Sridevi) to impersonate the lost heiress, sparking drama, romance, and intrigue in this masala entertainer. Sridevi's fiesty performance in the beginning and sheer elegance in the second act provides ample scope for her vast range. The critics may not have loved it - but her fans sure did. Sridevi looks, dances and acts like the Goddess she was. Is. Forever will be.

This is hardly a comprehensible or definitive listicle - pls let us know if we are missing any major films - comment below with name, year of release and any other pertaining information.

Sridevi and Anupam Kher's 13 films together over a decade: Screen Veterans had a Remarkable Dynamic

Chaalbaaz (1989)

When you place Sridevi next to any veteran actor, one thing comes to mind; age rarely dictates experience.

Anupam Kher, born on March 7, 1955, was nearly nine years older than Sridevi (born August 13, 1963). Yet, when Kher made his breakthrough with Saaransh in 1984, Sridevi was 21 but already a battle-hardened veteran of the silver screen.

As most fans know, she had begun as a child artist in 1967 at the tender age of four in Kandhan Karunai and amassed well over 100 films by 1984 - primarily in the Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada industry. By the mid-1980s she had more films than years under her belt.

Simultaneously, in 1984, Anupam Kher was a promising newcomer in his late 20s, making his debut in the much-beloved heart-breaking, slice of life classic that was Saranash. A small budget with a big impact, it was a fine example of what parallel cinema in Bombay [Mumbai later!] was creating. Whereas, on a screen across the road, in another cinema, Sridevi's jhatkas among the matkas was raking in the big bucks. Would a commercial star like Sridevi ever meet Best Actor winner Kher? It seemed unlikely that year - but by 1986, the twain met - and went on to work together in over a dozen films spanning a decade.

This fascinating reversal of roles defined their off-screen reality and on-screen chemistry. In Subhash Ghai’s blockbuster Karma (1986), Kher played the ruthless villain Dr. Michael Dang, while Sridevi starred as the spirited Radha amid an ensemble cast including Dilip Kumar, Anil Kapoor, Jackie Shroff and Naseer. But that was just the beginning - in the ensuing years, Kher and Sri navigated intense dramatic confrontations, comedy, melodrama, tragedy, battles and shared screen space with effortless command in one film after another. Anupam Kher repeatedly stated that Sridevi was his favourite actress - with good reason.

Their pairing shone in lighter and more complex avatars too. In Chaalbaaz (1989) as comical foes, Lamhe (1991) as friends, and their strained, estranged father daughter relationship in Guumrah (1993), they slipped into roles as feuding adversaries, loyal friends, comrades-in-arms, and even quirky co-conspirators. Whether trading witty barbs in comedy sequences or anchoring emotional moments, their on-screen rapport felt natural and lived-in. Films like Mr.Bechara further highlighted their easy camaraderie in a movie that didn't make blockbuster returns in cinema halls, but made an impact as a gentle comedy of errors.

Despite the age gap, Sridevi’s early start made her the seasoned guiding light, while Kher brought raw intensity, gravitas and versatility. Their collaborations remain a testament to talent transcending timelines - two icons who lit up the screen together, proving that in cinema, true veterans are defined by reel miles, not calendar years.

When it comes to Bollywood fashion, people tend to throw around the word "iconic" a little too loosely. Not everything is iconic. It has become the laziest go-to term for social media hacks - a habit that has now spilled over into print media as well. Sloppy writing at its finest.Well, at its worst really.

These outfits, however, are genuinely memorable. One glance and you instantly know exactly which actress wore it, in which film, and often during which song. Here are just a handful of truly unforgettable looks as the leading ladies of Indian cinema.

Manish Malhotra's Bollywood clothes... needs its own separate list. Neeta Lulla in the 90s, Bhanu's classics and the underrated Xerxes... who dazzled - literally. He was a bit too keen on the glitter and sequins. But it worked - embellishments and over the top outfits were the rage of the 70s and 80s...

Now there are too many fashion and style awards - but for decades, heck perhaps a century, the designer and tailor was not appreciated. Many left uncredited. When you think of a Nargis gown, Rekha sari, Sadhana's embroidered sari - does the name of the maker come to mind immediately?! No. Manish - with Rangeela - led the way when his role in the movie - behind the seams - just HAD to be acknowledged.

There are certain films that you can watch just for the visuals

Padhma Bhushan Alka Yagnik sang 25+ songs for Sridevi! A look back

Last night, singer Alka Yagnik added another feather to her illustrious cap, receiving the Padma Bhushan from Indian President Droupadi Murmu. The gifted singer has gone through some health troubles recently and we wish her a speedy recovery. A gifted young singer, she sang with contemporary stars as well as legends like Kishore Kumar! The first hit song I can remember of Alka is Mere Angne main in Laawaris!

A quick dive into Alkaji's career;

Alka Yagnik (born March 20, 1966) is one of India’s most celebrated playback singers, renowned for her versatile voice and immense contribution to Hindi cinema with a staggering number of songs and record breaking digital downloads. Born in Kolkata to a Gujarati family, she grew up in a musically inclined household. Her father, Dharmendra Shankar, worked as a Navy officer, while her mother, Shubha Yagnik, a trained classical singer, became her first guru and strongest supporter.

Alka began singing devotional songs (bhajans) for All India Radio, Kolkata, at the tender age of six. At ten, her mother took her to Mumbai to pursue a singing career. Though initially advised to wait until her voice matured, Alka’s determination paid off. She made her Bollywood debut with a few lines in Payal Ki Jhankaar (1979) and sang her first full song in Laawaris (1981) when she was just 15! Even Shreya Ghoshal was 16 when she sang for Devdas!

Alka's big breakthrough came in 1988 with the chart-topping, energetic number “Ek Do Teen” from Tezaab, which won her the first of her seven Filmfare Awards for Best Female Playback Singer. This catapulted her to stardom in the late 1980s and 1990s, where she became the dominant female voice in Bollywood alongside singers and frequent singing partners like Kumar Sanu and Udit Narayan.

Alka’s voice is celebrated for its clarity, emotional depth, and ability to handle diverse genres - from romantic melodies and dance numbers to qawwalis and folk-infused tracks. Iconic songs include “Choli Ke Peeche Kya Hai” (Khalnayak), “Taal Se Taal” (Taal), “Kuch Kuch Hota Hai,” “Hum Tum,” and , well, too many memorable duets to list. She has, allegedly, sung over 2,400 Hindi songs across more than 1,100 films and recorded in over 25 languages.

Her accolades include two National Film Awards, a record seven Filmfare Awards (from 37 nominations), and, as of yesterday, the prestigious Padma Bhushan (2026). Despite facing hearing challenges later in life, Alka remains a revered figure in Indian music for her four-decade journey as the “Melody Queen” of Bollywood.

Alka sang over two dozen songs for Sridevi - from the passable ditties in Ghar Sansar in 1986, to the fabulous solo Hakka illa re in the underrated Kaun Sachcha Kaun Jhootha. Funnily enough, both by Rajesh Roshan, king of the underrated Music Directors of India!

Though she famously sang many of Madhuri Dixit's major hits (Ek do teen, Dekha hai pehli baar etc onwards), she was a playback singer for Sridevi in several memorable films (and a few forgettable ones!). Here's a chronological list of songs Alka Yagnik - who was only three years younger than Sridevi - sang for the screen queen;

Asha Bhosle sings for Sridevi: The Definitive Listicle: Remembering the legend

Just heard earlier today that the legend Aasha Bhosle passed away in the early hours of the morning, at the age of 92. Strong innings and a legacy long-established, read the news with a sigh - timeless Aasha tai seemed immortal and yet the day has come...

Instead of mourning her loss, we are celebrating Asha Bhosle's timeless musical contribution. While others can try and encapsulate her Guiness-record-number of recorded songs, we are only looking here at Aasha Bhosle's contribution to Sridevi's films! We are rewinding the cassette tape to listen to this magical combo; the legendary, distinct and iconic voice of Aasha Bhosle and the on-screen song and dance antics of the great Sridevi!

Ashaji's versatile voice—playful, seductive, cheeky, and emotional—perfectly matched Sridevi's range from bubbly dances to seductive rain songs. A list of Hindi songs (primarily picturised on Sridevi), starting from the early 1980s era onward, in chronological order by film release year.

The table mirrors the structure of our earlier post, the Lata Mangeshkar list, for easy comparison: numbering, song title, film, year, music director, lyricist, singers.

Kader Khan with Sridevi: 17 Films Together over two decades

Fact is, Kader Khan was not given his due in the Hindi film industry. A true giant of Indian cinema, his infinite talents and knowledge, his surreal skills at easing into comedy, melodrama, and villainy with utter ease, his laudable writing, and dialogue delivery... all of it came flooding back to the memory bank as, earlier this week, television comedic genius Sunil Grover—the master of improv and mimicking—appeared in Netflix's The Great Indian Kapil Show (or Comedy Nights with Kapil revival) and gave a tour-de-force, pitch-perfect tribute to the late great Kader Khan.
Looking back at a list of films that Kader Khan appeared in with Sridevi—about 17 films over the course of nearly two decades, from Sridevi's first major Hindi hit Himmatwala in 1983 to Judaai in 1997—I would be remiss if I didn't mention that Kader Khan had one of the funniest and most memorable cameos in Chaalbaaz, though he and Sridevi didn't appear on screen together—but it remains a perennial favourite.

The great man died at age 81 [same year as Sridevi, back in 2018, except Sri was 54!], without much fanfare or celebrity appearances, with few and far between paying tribute. The industry has a way of forgetting those who did so much for it that's borderline cruel, unkind and merciless. Here today, gone tomorrow—the legend deserved a better farewell and more tributes, felicitations and national honours and recognition. Of course, he wasn't in India when he passed, and yet, one wonders if all those he helped took pause?
