Sridevi and NTR on the cover of Sunday magazine

Wow, there was a time in Indian cinema history when Sridevi was on the cover of a magazine and the editors thought not to even name her!! Just NTR  "with heroine!"

Well, back then Sridevi was just 19, her famous co-star was 60 - and making headlines as he jumped from cinema to the political bandwagon, cashing in on his wild popularity in Andhra.

They say star power is power; well, political power is real power in India. The more things change, the more they stay the same.

Exact Details:Jr NTR: Born 20 May 1983 (currently 43 years old as of 2026).

Sridevi with NTR in the Blockbuster Vetagadu (1979)

Released on 5 July 1979, Vetagadu (The Hunter) was a runaway hit int he 1970s.

Legend has it that the film producers were not convinced with K. Raghavendra Rao's choice of the female lead being Sridevi because she was "very young" - and she was. She was 40 years younger than her lead co-star! But at the time, there was no bigger star than NTR! After Rao convinced N. T. Rama Rao, 15-year-old Sridevi was cast....

Would love to believe this wouldn't happen today in Telugu film industry, but as recently as 2025, in the God-awful film (which was a shocking hit) Daaku Maharaj, the age-gap between the leads is about 34 years...  Some things, just don't change.

The age-old old age topic: Salman Khan with Nayanthara < Sridevi with NTR

Salman Khan's casting with Nayanthara in an upcoming film has reignited the age-old debate--geddit?!-- about older leading men and increasingly younger leading ladies. The 19-year age-gap is nothing compared to the legendary Telugu pairing of NTR with Sridevi.

N. T. Rama Rao (NTR) had the biggest age gap with Sridevi among her co-stars, at around 40 years; Sridevi (born 1963) started as a child artist and moved into lead roles as a teenager in South Indian cinema (mainly Telugu and Tamil films). In the late 1970s, she was paired romantically opposite NTR, a Telugu superstar born in 1923!

In films like Vetagadu (1979), NTR was about 55–56 while Sridevi was 15–16, creating a roughly 40-year difference. They worked together in a dozen films, including some where he played her romantic lead despite the massive gap (and even though he had earlier played her grandfather in Badi Panthulu when she was around 9).

This pairing is frequently cited as one of the most shocking or notable age gaps in Indian cinema history due to the extreme difference and the era's norms around hero-heroine pairings.

Other notable (but smaller) gaps:

ANR (Akkineni Nageswara Rao) — Also around a 40-year gap in some early Telugu films where Sridevi was a teenager and he was in his 50s/early 60s (similar context to NTR).

Amitabh Bachchan — Roughly 20–21 years (e.g., Inquilaab in 1984: Amitabh ~42, Sridevi ~20; Khuda Gawah in 1992: Amitabh ~50, Sridevi ~29).

Rajinikanth — About 13 years older; they collaborated extensively (including early films where roles were unconventional, like her playing his stepmother in their first film together!).

Later Bollywood pairings (e.g., with Anil Kapoor, Rishi Kapoor, or others) generally had much smaller gaps, often under 15 years once Sridevi was in her 20s–30s.

In her early career especially, South Indian films sometimes cast very young Sridevi opposite much older established heroes, which was more common then (and often criticized in retrospect with the lens of today).

Her real-life husband, Boney Kapoor (L), was about 8–9 years older, which is minor by comparison

These gaps reflect the filmmaking conventions of the 1970s–80s more than anything else and we aren't making a judgement call much reflecting on what was... and what hasn't changed.

Now, in 2026, big age gaps between male leads (often in their 50s–60s) and much younger female co-stars remain quite common in Bollywood, even in recent and upcoming films.

Sara Ali Khan & Akshay Kumar

In Atrangi Re (2021), Akshay Kumar (then ~54) was paired opposite Sara Ali Khan (then ~26) in a romantic angle. Age gap: 28 years. This pairing drew significant criticism and discussion at the time, as Akshay is even older than Sara's real father, Saif Ali Khan. Sara addressed the backlash, saying she trusted the director and that the story justified the dynamic.

Disha Patani & Salman Khan

In Radhe (2021) (and briefly in Bharat), Salman Khan was romancing Disha Patani. Age gap: ~27 years (Salman was around 55–56, Disha ~28–29 during filming). Salman even joked in interviews that he "looks the same age" as Disha in the film.

Salman Khan & Saiee Manjrekar in Dabangg 3 (2019) — ~32–36 years (Salman ~53–54, Saiee ~21).

Salman Khan & Rashmika Mandanna in Sikandar (2025) — 31 years (Salman ~59, Rashmika ~28).

Akshay Kumar & Manushi Chhillar in Samrat Prithviraj — ~29–30 years.

By the way - wonder if the producers or stars have noticed the correlation between the wide-age gap between the stars, and how badly the movies were received?! Most of these recent age-gap films tanked at the box-office and were widely panned by the critics in equal measure! Now, I'm not saying its causation, but surely this warrants a pause for thought? And its generally nearly 60 Salman, and aging Akshay (58) that seem to be clinging on for dear life with younger costars with no avail, nor chemistry.

Veterans like Salman, Akshay, with young actresses is nothing compared to South stars (e.g., Nandamuri Balakrishna with younger actresses in some films), who continue to cling on to the last vestige of youth, bad dye jobs, wigs, cringe dancing moves and co-stars younger than their youngest children...

Much of Indian cinema has a long history of casting established older male superstars opposite debutantes or actresses in their 20s. Directors and producers often cite cliche responses to criticism with the tropes of "star power," "audience demand," or "script requirements," while critics point to it as a sign of reluctance to let male stars age on screen or cast age-appropriate female leads.  The conversation has grown louder with social media, but the pattern continues in commercial films.

Compared to the massive ~40-year gaps Sridevi faced in the late 1970s (e.g., with NTR or ANR), today's gaps are generally smaller (25–35 years is now more typical for the biggest ones), but they still stand out because the industry has evolved in many other ways. The trend is slowly facing pushback, with some films now exploring more balanced pairings or even older woman-younger man dynamics, but big commercial projects with huge gaps are still very much part of the pan-Indian-cinematic-landscape.

Cringe included.

After the topic of age gap, next discussion wage gap. Actresses earning a fraction of the "hero"'s remuneration.

Sridevi with NTR: Sardar Paparayudu (1980): The Telugu smash that became Sarfarosh (1985)

The Telugu blockbuster Sardar Paparayudu released in 1980, starring the young starlet Sridevi, who had just turned 17, with her much older co-star, the legendary NTR aka N.T. Rama Rao.

Years later, when the film was remade in Hindi as Sarfarosh, Jeetendra grabbed the title role and retained Sridevi as leading lady, who by 1985, was already a pan-Indian superstar.

Sridevi and NTR in Anuraga Devatha (1982)

Young Sridevi 18, with NTR, 58!

The Telugu hit Anuraga Devatha released back in 1982. A drama directed by T. Rama Rao (Tatineni Rama Rao), produced by Nandamuri Harikrishna under Ramakrishna Cine Studios, it is a remake of the 1980 Hindi blockbuster Aasha, which featured Reena Roy and Jeetendra Everyone remembers the iconic Lata Mangeshkar song from that film, Sheesha ho ya dil ho, an eternal classic.

Released on 9 January 1982 (some sources mention 7 January), the movie was a commercial hit, part of the successful Sridevi-NTR pairing streak in the early 1980s.

The age gap between the two, was 40 years; NTR (Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao) was born on 28 May 1923 and Sridevi was born on 13 August 1963! The film was shot primarily in 1981 (ahead of its January 1982 release) and, at that time,  NTR was around 58 years old, while young Sridevi was around 18 years old! Yes, he was indeed older than Sridevi's lawyer-father!!

Incredibly enough, Anuraga Devatha is fondly recalled for its emotional story, music, and the on-screen chemistry of NTR and Sridevi despite the significant age difference.

Now and then: Janhvi Kapoor with NTR Jnr: Sridevi with NTR

Age gaps in the early days of Telugu cinema were absurd -- things aren't that much better now either.

Janhvi Kapoor has done a film with NTR Jnr, who is 42, Janhvi is 28, a 14-year age gap, which is nothing compared to Sridevi and NTR who was about 40 years older than her.

Well, at least Jr NTR was a Sridevi mega fan

Sridevi and N. T. Rama Rao in the Telugu film Satyam Sivam (1981)

Sridevi, 18, and  N. T. Rama Rao, 58, in the Telugu film Satyam Sivam (1981)

The Telugu remake of the Rekha - Amitabh Bachchan Hindi smash Suhaag (which was the biggest hit of 1979), the 40 year age gap was... strange then, improbably now.

BTW the film also had Rati Agnihotri, 21, with co-star Akkineni Nageswara Rao, 58.

Sridevi and NTR in Bobbili Puli (1982)

Celebrating 40 years of  Bobbili Puli (1982).

At the time of its release, this film was the third highest grossing Telugu film of ALL TIME, and the highest grossing Telugu film in 1982 by a mile.

"The film also reportedly served as a political tool for NTR, who had started his campaign to become chief minister, and has been attributed as a factor for his victory."

NTR was 40 years older than his teenage costar, a very young Sridevi.
