Feroz Khan with Sridevi in Jaanbaaz: Swagger, Cinema, and Style: Honouring the Legacy of Feroz Khan

September 25, Bollywood turns back the clock to honour the birth anniversary of its quintessential swaggering showman, Feroz Khan.

Born in Bangalore, Khan single-handedly revolutionised Bollywood by introducing an unapologetic Western slickness, cowboy aesthetics, and unmatched high-octane glamour to the silver screen. Long before debonair anti-heroes became mainstream, he carried himself with an effortless swagger, signature Stetson hats, fine boots, and cigar-toting charisma that earned him the title of the Clint Eastwood of the East.

As a filmmaker and actor, Khan possessed an uncanny vision for casting the finest talent, effortlessly working with all the top leading ladies of the era. From Hema Malini in Dharmatma to Dimple Kapadia, Sridevi and Rekha in Janbaaz, he presented women with a stunning combination of raw sensuality and fierce dignity.

His creative relationship with Sridevi stood out as a stroke of visionary directing. Though Sridevi made only a brief special appearance in Janbaaz (1986), Khan capitalized on her unmatched stardom, sensuality and framed her exquisitely in the memorable song Har Kisi Ko Nahi Milta. Under his lens, Sridevi looked ethereal, draped in flowing sarees along wind-swept coastlines, creating a cinematic moment that remains etched in pop-culture history. When asked who was the sexiest heroine he worked with - he ruffled many feathers when he stated on record that Sridevi was the most beautiful - this after having worked with Mumtaz to Madhuri Dixit.

Khan operated with an enviable success ratio that few producers could match. Rather than overloading his filmography, he focused on lavish scale and quality, directing iconic blockbusters like Apradh, Dharmatma, Qurbani, and Janbaaz - the vast majority of which dominated the box office. He transformed Indian action cinema into a globe-trotting spectacle filled with fast cars, slick action, and unforgettable chartbusters.

Even in his later years, his memorable turn as RDX in Welcome proved that age could never dim his legendary swash-buckling style - Feroz Khan, one in a billion.

Youth, Glamour, and Glory: Who Really Is the Youngest Best Actress Winner in Indian Cinema History?

By the time most teenagers are navigating the transition into adulthood, Sridevi was already rewriting the rules of Indian cinema. At just 19 years old, she picked up a Filmfare trophy that was the first landmark that cemented her status as a generational phenomenon.

Born to act [R Balki quote], the star seamlessly transitioned from a celebrated child prodigy in Tamil and Malayalam cinema to an undisputed powerhouse in Tamil and Hindi films, earning her first lead Filmfare Award for Best Actress - Tamil for Meendum Kokila at a mere 18 years of age. Her early dominance naturally raises a fascinating question for cinephiles: has any leading lady ever claimed the ultimate acting prize at a younger age?

The history books point to Dimple Kapadia, who made a explosive debut in Bobby (1973) and famously shared the Best Actress trophy with Jaya Bachchan’s moving turn in Abhimaan [a film with the most flawless music composed by legend S.D.Burman]. Kapadia was just 16 at the time. However, history comes with its share of whispers. Rishi Kapoor’s revelatory autobiography cast a shadow of ambiguity over that legendary win, suggesting that awards during that era could occasionally be secured for a price- even if 40,000 rupees was a small fortune in the early seventies.

If we look strictly at undisputed Hindi cinema records, Padmini Kolhapure stands as the absolute prodigy of the Filmfare stage. After claiming Best Supporting Actress at age 15 for Insaf Ka Tarazu, she went on to win the Best Actress honors for Prem Rog at just 17. Decades later, icons like Karisma Kapoor took home the crown at 22 for Raja Hindustani, followed by Kajol at 24 for Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, and Alia Bhatt at 25 for Raazi.

Yet, when evaluating pan-Indian cinema in its entirety, Sridevi’s teenage legacy remains unmatched. Captivating audiences and critics alike since her breakout role in 16 Vayathinile at age 14, she proved that true stardom knows no age limit, carving out a legendary space as one of the youngest supreme leading ladies in film history.

Perfection = Sridevi in an ivory Sabyasachi embroidered sari

Back in December 2015, Sridevi attended Jaya Prada's nephew's wedding in an ivory Sabyasachi sari - surprising the other actress' clan that she accepted the invitation, considering the famed feud between the two for years. Well, she arrived in full glam, looking better than ever. She dwarfed short and heavier Jaya reminding all of the grand strides Devi made, while leaving her competition in the dust...

Just sayin'...

There are no permanent relationships in Bollywood, no enemies, no friends, no relationships.

Photographer Ravi captured young Sridevi on the still-camera. Now he's posting them on Instagram

Young teenaged Sridevi working umpteen shifts in the Tamil film industry meant the sheer volume of her work is incredible. During rare breaks, veteran photographer Ravi captured these rare photos of Sridevi. He's slowly archiving them on social media. Give him a follow - and request (politely! gently!) to post more of this icon.

The first frame of Dhadak: 20 Jul 2018: The Sridevi tribute by Janhvi Kapoor

The first frame of Dhadak: 20 Jul 2018: The Sridevi tribute by Janhvi Kapoor. I remember watching this and tearing up....

Just five months after Sridevi's passing, the fact she didn't get to see her first-born's completed film (legend has it that she did see bits and parts of the movie prior to release)... It was all too much...

Shahrukh Khan's Zero was another film that opened with a Sridevi tribute...

Dhadak's box-office was phenomenal, despite lukewarm reviews; a Budget of ₹41 crore and Box office est. ₹110 crore!

Took me a long time to watch the film as we knew it was a tragedy - and yet, the shock of that ending stayed with me for a long time. As did the music. The lead star kids were fine - in retrospect they were great. There have been far worse nepo babies since...

Stunning Sridevi in Jaag Utha Insan

Sridevi, 20, in the Hindi film Jaag Utha Insan. Released on 6 July 1984, this lovely Hindi film is easily the most underrated and rarely seen movies. Legend has it that, according to film writer Rajesh Subramanian, Jaya Prada (the director's favourite) was the first choice but since her dates were committed and clashed with Prakash Mehra's Sharaabi, Sridevi was signed to play the female lead.

Sridevi worked in the film (and cut her considerable price) to work with the legend K. Viswanath. Sharaabi went on to be a big hit, and Jaya Prada got a few scenes and songs out of it. Jaag Utha Insan was a serious affair that tanked at the box-office and ignited much speculation and rumours about the lead stars, Mithun and Sridevi. Rumours that have refused to die till date!

Sridevi and Dimple Kapadia share tabloid cover of Film Rekha

Dimple Kapadia turns 69 today. The gorgeous grandmother always had the greatest head of hair on film, a decent actress, always elegant, very stylish, a child bride and movie star... has had one of the most interesting lives off screen! On screen her successes have been intermittent, great highs and quite a few duds... but ravishing Dimple Kapadia always gave spicy copy. Uncensored, unbothered, she played the fame game well.

We couldn't find ONE picture of Dimple Kapadia with Sridevi - even though they both appeared in the film Jaanbaaz back in 1986... and had parallel lives and careers in Bollywood in that infamous decade.

But they shared many tabloid magazine covers over the years. Sridevi seen here on the sets of... Nagina or Nigahein? Comment below to let us know!

Sridevi as a teenage sensation in Tamil films

Sridevi in the 1970s in Tamil cinema (Johnny was released in 1980 but shot in 1979). She was experimenting with looks, perforamances, roles... as Tamil cinema was going through seismic change. Many refer to the The Golden Age of Tamil cinema to be the 1950s to the 1970s. This era was defined by the rise of legendary actors like M.G. Ramachandran (MGR) and Sivaji Ganesan, strong social narratives, and the establishment of landmark films that blended entertainment with social change. Some perspectives highlight the 1980s–2000s as a significant era for commercial cinema, starring actors like Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan. Others refer to the 2000s (2001-2008) as a "golden age" for music and new-age filmmaking.

The Sridevian era to us is obviously most fascinating as Sridevi redefined the role of a leading lady - from early on. Rarely a victim, she rebelled, she self-empowered, she fought back, she used her sensuality, she kept her innocence, she had agency and she had money. It is an uncomfortable conversation but in many ways, we cannot not talk about; Sridevi (and her fiercely protective mother) were very clear about monetary transactions, film contracts and legal notifications - Sridevi's father was after all, a lawyer. In the Tamil version of Who Wants to be a Millionaire? Sridevi mentions the conversation she had with Rajinikanth about dreaming about higher pay, or at least equal pay to the superstars of their time. Both achieved it and how - Sridevi was often touted as the highest paid Indian actress of her time. And Rajinikanth's remuneration in films made for the record books. Both of them refused to be long-suffering penniless artists and stars in the name of high art. It was commercial cinema all the way that built the mansions. And they paid the price for it; Sridevi's health, her sacrifice of a personal life, higher education, freedom. She mentioned in several interviews that she would look at the clock like a schoolgirl and wait for the time to turn six so she could run home; never wasted a second of her time longer than necessary to be on set. But while she was on; she gave it her all.

Jaya Prada and Sridevi: Telugu Frenemies

Jaya Prada and Sridevi: Telugu Frenemies

Jaya Prada has done yet another interview where she's re-writing history of the most famous feud of the 1980s, the one wildly manipulated by the media and the flames that singed and burned their relationship for years.

We may be accused of the same, but we are just reporting exactly what happened during those tumultuous years as the surviving actress is misremembering history. We could barely find an acidic note from Sridevi on their rivalry, but we found plenty where Jaya Prada and her brother said several uncomplimentary things about Sridevi when they first stepped into the Hindi film industry.

Glad they buried the hatchet - as the last image of Sridevi attending Jaya Prada's family wedding is the enduring memory from 2016. Tall, slim, statuesque Sridevi in an ivory Sabyasachi looked like the glorious movie star she was. Jaya held on to her arm for the cameras for a second longer than needed - she played to the galleys. If you know, you know...

Sridevi with celebrity Bollywood photographer Dabboo Ratnani

Wishing celebrity photographer Dabboo Ratnani a very happy birthday. Same day as Anil Kapoor - but different year obviously!!

Seen here with the staggeringly beautiful Indian icon, "the great Sridevi."
