Maheshwari posts rarely seen family photos of Sridevi

Former 1990s South Indian actress Maheshwari is Sridevi’s maternal niece - and she just posted a reel of rare photos of Sridevi from the family album. Sridevi without makeup at home, hugging her pet dog, at family events, at film parties and so on. A rare glimpse at a superstar in the comforts and safety of home.

I've always been a bit confused about how Maheshwari is related to Sridevi - as the media has called her Sridevi's niece and sometimes her cousin!

To clear it up, Maheshwari’s mother, Suryakala, is Sridevi’s elder half-sister (from Sridevi's mother Rajeswari’s previous marriage). Maheshwari referred to Sridevi as her aunt (Masi), while Sridevi’s daughters, Janhvi and Khushi Kapoor, consider Maheshwari their aunt/cousin figure (affectionately known in the family as "Magi Maasi").

After retiring from mainstream acting in 2000, Maheshwari's all too short a stint at acting in the 90s came to an abrupt pause, which is a pity as she was a fine actress with comedic sparks. She transitioned into fashion design with Sridevi’s guidance and support, frequently designing outfits for Sridevi and her daughters for high-profile red carpets and public events.

Birth Anniversary of Sridevi: August 13

This Sridevi fan page was launched on August 14, 2000. We posted twice daily. Sometimes more... Not only has the fan affection of Sridevi not diminished, it has quadrupled over the years. Our stats are at record high - which means, we've had to be firm in only posting what we know as true - or the accepted truth.

TBT: Sridevi's last birthday hosted by celebrity designer (and best friend) Manish Malhotra: Aishwarya Rai, Rekha, Vidya Balan, Rani Mukherjee, Tina Munim, Shabana Azmi attend

Throwback to 2017! Manish Malhotra hosted a party to celebrate Sridevi’s 54th birthday, and of course, the entire crème de la crème of Bollywood showed up; an A-list line up of iconic Indian actresses celebrating the female fraternity of film icons. It turned into this rare, magical gathering where actresses of note from different generations came together, looking absolutely stunning and owning every bit of their power.

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Shabana Azmi, Vidya Balan, Rani Mukerji, Rekha, Tina Ambani, and of course, the birthday girl Sridevi herself — all in one room, smiling, laughing, and clicking those gorgeous photos that just scream timeless elegance and sisterhood.

Vidya Balan looked completely starstruck, like she couldn’t believe she was sharing the same space with all her idols under one roof; Filmfare Awards nite would have died to get this lineup together for a cover, let alone their (increasingly questionable) awards ceremony.

The energy must have been unreal. I can’t stop wondering what these fierce, legendary women were talking about. Was it scripts, life, family… or were they secretly plotting global domination with their unmatched talent and grace? Or maybe they were just laughing about how the media loves to pit strong women against each other and create unnecessary drama where none exists.

Either way, it was such a refreshing sight — real admiration, no shade, just pure celebration of each other’s journeys.

Big shoutout and blessings to Manish Malhotra for always creating these special spaces where Bollywood’s most powerful female forces can come together, bond, and shine unapologetically.

More of this please!

Rare pic of Sridevi's 27th birthday: Boney Kapoor, Rajeshwari (Sridevi's mother) and Sridevi

A picture posted by Boney Kapoor has sparked a furious debate on his comments section. We are... refraining from further comment.

But lovely to see a happy Sridevi with her family and friends celebrating her birthday.

Sridevi's children post rare pics of Sridevi

Well, Jhanvi Kapoor re-posted ol' snaps but Sridevi's youngest posted these rarely seen images from the family album on Sridevi's 62nd birth anniversary.

The nation, and indeed the cine-world, lost an actress, national treasure, but these two kids lost a parent. No greater loss, nor recovery from that base point in life. That too at such a young age.

Sridevi's last Birthday Celebrations at Manish Malhotra's home with A-list stars.

A rare clip of Sridevi surrounded by industry friends; the A-list of Aishwarya Rai-Bachchan, Vidya Balan, Rani Mukherjee, Rekha, Shabana Azmi, Tina Munim/Ambani, at Sridevi's best friend, designer Manish Malhotra's house. And Jitesh Pillai was there for... whatever reason.

Happy Birthday Sridevi: August 13

Sridevi's 60th Birth Anniversary: Prayers and peace for the Indian Icon, Legendary Actress and Beauty

"....Age cannot wither her, nor custom stale
Her infinite variety: other women cloy
The appetites they feed: but she makes hungry
Where most she satisfies; for vilest things
Become themselves in her: that the holy priests
Bless her when she is riggish...."

Sridevi and Vyjanthimala: Both born on August 13, the South Indian legends ruled Bollywood

Sridevi and Vyjanthimala were both born on August 13 and the South Indian actresses, beauties and legendary dancers ruled Bollywood with top billing, co-stars, directors, as roles were written specially for these \undisputed Number One actresses/superstars of their time.

What else did they have in common? A lot. Some tenuous links and some more gossamer ones.

Vyjanthimala was born in 1936, Sri in 1963. If numerology means something to you, there's a bizarre albeit lofty ink there.

Both started off in Tamil and Telugu films.

Both started their careers when they were young; Vyjanthimala was just 5 years old when she was chosen to perform a dance in front of the Pope as a part of cultural celebrations. Sridevi was 4 when she started acting in devotional films.

Both starred a film titled Devta (1956), Sridevi in Devatha (1982).

Vyjanthimala was highest paid actress in Hindi Cinema from 1962-65; Sridevi was the highest paid actress in Hindi cinema from 1984-1993.

Both actresses had homes in Mumbai and Chennai and were equally at ease in Tamil and Hindi.

One of Vyjanthimala's biggest hits Sangam (1964) was loosely remade as Ram Avtar with Sridevi as the lead in 1988. Why, if you closely look at the way Nigode mardon ka was shot and conceived, its a rework and reimagining of Main Kya Karun Raam Mujhe Budha Mil Gaya...

When they were still top actresses, both gave it all up for marriage and motherhood; Vyjayanthimala married the already married Dr Chamanlal Bali in 1968. Sridevi married the already married film producer Boney Kapoor in 1996.

Both discovered sports after marriage, Mrs Bali was an avid golfer and Sridevi loved playing tennis to stay fit

Happy Birthday Jaya Prada: Sridevi's arch rival and off-screen frenemy

A year older than Sridevi, the fellow Andhra actress  Jaya Prada turns 60 today. A milestone year for a legendary beauty.

We've written a lot about the most famous feud in Bollywood history, so we won't delve into it any further but Sridevi and Jaya Prada made Indian tabloids so juicy, gossipy and fun in the 1980s - long before muted diplomacy (and Kangana Ranaut-ism) became the norm.

Believe it or not, at a time, Jaya Prada was once a favourite for us too; gorgeous beyond belief (see how stunning she is in Sharaabi), a gifted actress (Sargam is an acting tour de force that sadly, she never bettered) and a true blue movie star (she absolutely shines in any and every K Vishwanath film).

However, Jaya Prada was also a spitfire and the things she's said in the press were either endlessly entertaining or a bit too caustic. But in essence, she was a great star of her time.

We wish the star-actress the best for a memorable 60th birthday.

21: Khushi Kapoor: Sridevi's youngest steps gingerly into adulthood

21: Khushi Kapoor: Sridevi's youngest steps gingerly into adulthood

Born at the turn of the millinium, the definitive millenial fashionista has over half a million followers already and so far, we've seen the young gal have exquisite taste in Indian and Western attire - something she inherited from her gifted mother who had a preternatural instinct for smart sartorial selects.

Rumour has it, she'll soon be seen on screen.

We wish Sri-putri the best.

Had she been alive, Sridevi would have turned 58 today.

Happy Birthday Sridevi. Wherever you are...

Sridevi with her sister Sreelatha at home in Chennai

Either 5th or 6th August is Sridevi's sister Sreelatha's birthday.

Sridevi was very close to her only sibling in the early years. There was a fall-out soon after their mother died. Typical of any family feud, it was chaos over inheritance and property. As The Hindu reported,

"... It was the climax, alright. But not exactly the courtroom drama types. At the Madras High Court, the evergreen Sridevi, sporting a brown churidhar, went unnoticed, when she made a cameo appearance as the judge passed a decree on the sharing of the family property.

After their mother, late Rajeswari Ayyappan, died in '96, the star's family won a Rs. 7.10 crore compensation suit against a US hospital for wrong treatment. Sridevi's sister, Srilatha Sanjay Ramaswamy had then taken the family to court to settle the dispute over sharing of the compensation and other property.

On Monday, the tangle was sorted out as the family members entered into a compromise. Srilatha now gets Rs. 2 crores, and another claimant, Suryakala takes Rs. 50 lakh. No prizes to guess who took the rest of the money home. Mrs. Kapoor not just won a few crores, but also a share of prime properties in Chennai and its suburbs and in Mumbai...."
--The Hindu, Wednesday, April 26, 2000.

The brouhaha over property and money - something so typical in family feuds that it doesn't require any more press, so we'll refrain from further comment. On the plus side, soon after there was a reconciliation between the sparring sisters. Legend has it Boney Kapoor had a hand in ensuring that the sister retained ties - even though Sreelatha famously spoke out again him to the press in 1997-1998, during Sridevi and Boney Kapoor's controversial marriage.

Thankfully the sisters had made up, all was forgiven (on both sides) and were close again in the latter half of Sridevi's all-too short life.

We have the largest archive of Sridevi with her only sister Sreelatha, her youngest sibling here.
