Back in the early 90s, when the VHS of this film was released, some versions snipped this beautiful number from the film, and a certain section of the audience didn't get to see Sridevi's myriad expressions and grace from this gorgeous song and dance routine, shot among the forts and palaces of picture-perfect Rajasthan. 

A Yash Chopra heroine has been presented well innumerable times, but Sridevi's performance elevated this entire film. As repeatedly mentioned in several articles - further bolstered by Shah Rukh Khan on stage no less - Sridevi was Yashji's favourite actress. Of all time. She's ours too. But that goes without saying... 

Sridevi's thoughts on Lamhe: 90s Classic from Bollywood

Sridevi, "I love the film but I still feel that the climax of the film went wrong. I feel Lamhe can be divided into two halves: the rest of the movie and the climax. 

Maybe it's my mindset, but I wasn't convinced that the man (Kunwar Viren Pratap Singh played by Anil Kapoor) could suddenly fall in love with the daughter (Pooja). Throughout the film, he keeps telling her that he loves her mother and then suddenly in the climax he says, I love you. She even retorts: "Mujhse ya meri soorat se?" His change of heart was too sudden. 

I've always felt this way but Yashji was convinced about his ending and ultimately it's the director's film, and like always, I surrendered."

So on this blog, we've mostly featured Sridevi and Yash Chopra's comments on Lamhe. Here's what we've gathered from Anil Kapoor from various sources and interviews over the years regarding the film. 

Yash Chopra was advised to change the ending whereby Pooja convinces Viren to stop sleeping with her mother's ghost (in a manner of speaking). But the director insisted that if he had changed the ending it wouldn't have been the film he set out to make.

Sridevi asked Yash Chopra to consider changing the ending (see her interview with Rajeev Masand on CNN). Though it didn't work as a commercial hit, she still loved the film and thought she performed better in Lamhe than she did in Chandni. 

Anil Kapoor, "Well, Lamhe, people liked the second half better. The first half, I found to be unnecessarily slow. A film must hold you from the beginning to the end. People say climax theek nahi tha [It wasn't ok]. I feel it was ahead of its time. And Sridevi was magnificent in both Mr India and Lamhe. She was beyond perfect in Mr India. Or, for that matter, even Judaai, if you've see her in the film, she is exceptional."

Lamhe was dubbed in English and was released under the name 'Indian Summer' for the overseas audience. However, the English version did not fare any better. In fact, with the absence of many songs, it felt a poorer version of Chopra's original concept. The magic of Bollywood is its song and dance routines, executed perfectly by its superstars; deleting them for an international audience took away the soul of the film.

The movie is a perennial favourite and winner of five Filmfare awards - and it deserved far more. Best Film, Best Story, Best Dialogues, Best Comedian and of course, Best Actress.
