This Chamikla Newsbyte: Anyone fact checking? Calling bullsh** on this Sridevi and Chamkila film collab

This newsbyte has cropped up again and I'm calling Bullshit on it.

This story has all the hallmarks of speculative, hearsay-driven film journalism that spreads like wildfire without verification, a newsbyte that cropped up around the 2024 Netflix biopic Chamkila (starring the fantastic Diljit Dosanjh). A genuinely moving film that was beautifully made, what irked us Sridevi fans and historians is this side-note that became popular fiction disguised as fact.

Multiple major outlets (Times of India, Hindustan Times, WION, DNA, News18, etc.) repeated nearly identical versions of the anecdote in April 2024 and even later in 2025, but it all traces back to a single source: an old YouTube interview with Sawarn Sivia, described as Chamkila's close friend and lyricist.

Key issues with the claim stem from this, and I'm paraphrasing here, "Sridevi was a producer / offered him to be hero in her film": Sridevi was primarily an actress in the 1980s. She didn't step into production/co-production roles until much later (post-marriage to Boney Kapoor, more prominently in the late 1990s - and post marriage and baby). The story implies she was actively producing or backing a project where she could cast an unknown (to Bollywood) folk singer as the male lead opposite her. That's a massive leap for the era and is simply not factual.

Firstly, there's a timeline mismatch: Chamkila was assassinated on 8 March 1988 at age 27, at the peak of his Punjab popularity but during the height of the Punjab insurgency. Sridevi was a massive pan-Indian star by then (huge in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu cinema), but her producing phase and greater creative control came much, much later. A collaboration "couldn't happen" because he died young, but the offer itself would have had to predate 1988 - when Sridevi was averaging 12 film releases a year with already established mega-stars. With all due respect to the singer and his legacy, he was mostly known in one state and had not made the pan-Indian crossover.

Secondly, there's the language and background realities: Sridevi's mother tongue was Telugu; she started in South Indian films as a child artist and reportedly had limited Hindi proficiency early on (she learned dialogues phonetically for her initial Bollywood work). The story has her casually offering to "train him in Hindi in a month" while also pivoting to a Punjabi film—feels convenient but not logical. Chamkila was a raw Punjabi folk sensation, not a Hindi-film aspirant. His appeal was deeply rooted in village/Punjab audiences with explicit, folk-style lyrics performed live. Sridevi herself was struggling with language difficulties and how on earth (let alone why on earth) was she going to teach anyone Mumbai Hindi?!

Thirdly, Chamkila's fame level: He was enormous within Punjab—often called the "Elvis of Punjab," highest record-seller, doing hundreds of live shows a year, with massive local cassette sales and stage frenzy. But he wasn't a national/Hindi cinema crossover figure. This was all pre-social media, Bollywood rarely plucked folk singers from regional circuits to play heroes opposite superstars like Sridevi without some established bridge. Many of the film producers might have been college-illiterate but they weren't stupid with money! The story somewhat inflates his pan-Indian visibility to Diljit-era levels. This simply wasn't true!

Source quality: It's second-hand recollection from a friend decades later. No contemporary reports, no photos, no co-stars/producers confirming it, no paper trail from the 1980s - nearly all of which we've archived here. If it was published in Punjabi tabloids - we don't have it - and Sridevi certainly didn't! This is classic "friend of the legend said..." material that gets recycled because it makes for a juicy "what if" headline tying a Punjabi icon to a Bollywood legend.

When you look back at Sridevi's Hindi filmography, Sridevi rarely acted with newcomers, in fact, only one name comes to mind; Kunal Goswami, son of Manoj Kumar. In Hindi films, Sridevi worked with establishes stars Jeetendra, Rajesh Khanna, Amitabh Bachchan, Rishi Kapoor. Launching a hero using the coattails of Sridevi's superstardom, just wasn't a thing in the 1980s. Especially for an established superstar like Sridevi who could not have been busier; 1986, Sridevi appeared in 14 films, in 1987: 9 films and in 1988: 6 films (or 7 including cameo). At what juncture would she have the time of a day for an unknown entity in her orbit?!

Film journalism (especially in India) loves these unverified celebrity anecdotes— they drive clicks, fit nostalgia narratives, and tie into the Chamkila movie hype. Once one outlet runs with "reveals his friend," others copy-paste without basic cross-checks on timelines, Sridevi's career stage, or independent corroboration.

No major fact-check seems to have debunked it outright; well, we are doing it NOW.

It is mostly presented as colourful trivia and several points hold up well on scrutiny: the power dynamics, language barriers, production realities, and regional vs. national fame don't align neatly for a straightforward "Sridevi offered him the hero role" story in the mid-80s. It could be a garbled kernel of truth (maybe she heard a song and liked it), heavily embroidered over time. This is a textbook case of how hearsay becomes "reported fact" in entertainment media. Pre-internet stories from the 1980s are especially prone to this—memories fade, details shift, and no one has incentive to question a feel-good (or "missed opportunity") tale.

The lack of fact-checking - alacrity over accuracy - is rife on social media. We refuse to fall for it.

This Sridevi and Chiranjeevi Newsbyte is Trending: But is it True?

What social media has done is gotten rid of the gatekeepers of reliable news - hang on - the responsible ones, the fact checkers, the verifiers, the ones who look at a piece of information and think is this news? Is it true? Is it libelous? Or is it plausible fiction?!

We are constantly leaving comments on posts - be it false or flattering, it has to be fact-checked.

There doesn't seem to be any compunction to question a piece of information - to even randomly check on Google...

Now this bit about stars earning 1croare - its plausible, possible and potentially true. Chiranjeevi and Sridevi were Telugu superstars and their film JVAS was a massive hit - and Telugu superstars famously are one of the highest paid people in the film industry... The iconic duo earning as much possible - but we need a reliable source to confirm the news on record, otherwise we take it with a pinch of salt.

Now this left newsbyte that has been trending - it could have used a very simple fact check. 90s supermodel Deepak Malhotra (now known as Dino Martelli), is best remembered for playing Siddharth Kumar Bhatnagar (Pallavi's husband) in the 1991 Yash Chopra film Lamhe opposite Sridevi. But it wasn't just 'one' role as he went on to appear in Tejasvini (1994) — his second and final film role (opposite Vijayshanti). There were other films that were launched but never took off - which was often true in the 80s and 90s  - there are innumerable failure-to-launch movies that make headlines, but are never completed.

Misinformation online: Sridevi and Ratna Pathak Shah

This image was trending online and... just... why?!

Firstly, Sridevi was born in 1963, Ratna Pathak Shah was born in 1957! So.... how are they the same age?!

Sridevi with Sushant Singh Rajput? FAKE Viral pic trends

This FAKE picture is a composite of two separate images of Sridevi and Sushant Singh Rajput adjoined as one to create the illusion that the two stars were snapped together at an event.

It NEVER happened.

But still, it has gone viral on Instagram... and it makes us cringe.

https://www.bbc.com/…/20121213-fake-pictures-make-real-memo…

Remastered pics next to their original, we have a long list of them below. It is sad that fans think that its ok to morph images to such an extent without recognising the error of their ways.

(R) The original portrait of Sridevi taken by the late great photographer Gautam Rajadhyaksha on the sets of the film Gumrah. (L) A re-imagined picture of Sridevi with longer hair, matted makeup and a brighter lip.

Above: The trending social media picture - a fake one obviously - of Sridevi with Kangana Ranaut, Rekha and Sridevi. The fact that there are people who believe that this picture is real - and have said so online - just sort of lets you know the level of intellect we are dealing with here. A lot of flat earthers out there... That's our new way of calling someone stupid; flat earthers, science and global warming deniers, "alternative fact" believers...

Reema Lagoo had no gripe against Sridevi in Gumrah (1993): Fake news spreading online

Sridevi with Reema Lagoo

The late Reema Lagoo was a wonderful actress, had a stellar reputation of being a lovely person, a thorough professional and she was fabulously outspoken in her interviews with the press.

So it comes across as a shock that years after both Sridevi and Reema passed, an article on Pinkvilla (the bottom feeder of online film "journalism") states that Sridevi actively cut Reema's role in Gumrah in the early '90s as she was allegedly jealous of her.

No proof, no recording, no quote, no research, no verifiable source, just an allegation thrown against the actress based on no fact nor finding. Yet the feature finds traction online and has been re-posted and re-cast in several media outlets.

If you've seen the original material that Gumrah is based on (television series Bangkok Hilton with Nicole Kidman no less), the role of the mom is not a lengthy one. If you have basic common sense, you know that Sridevi was the lead of the film and Reema had a character role, both stars were aware of their roles from the get-go. Sridevi was infinitely secure in her part and having worked with a slew of other actresses over the years had never had to resort to backbiting, editing, or buckling the other to increase her profile.

The only gripe that came out of the movie in 1993 was between actor Rahul Roy and the film's director Mahesh Bhatt, who had chopped his role and a song (Yeh Zindagi ka Safar, a gorgeous duet) as the film ended up being too lengthy for a thriller. Both actor and director fought it out in the press in 1993 and Rahul Roy famously didn't attend the premiere of the film in defiance of it. Years later, Roy and Bhatt made up.

Reema Lagoo herself never spoke about her role being chopped and she sure as hell didn't blame Sridevi for an act she didn't do! The miscreants who've fabricated this news-byte and conventionally passed blame on someone who can't defend herself is in such poor taste; defamatory at worst, pointlessly mean-spirited at best.

Sadly, all those who were witness to fact are no longer with us, producer Yash Johar, Sridevi nor Reema Lagoo. At least in death, please can we let them rest in peace?

Language, Please: Sridevi's highly anticipated return

In her comeback film titled English Vinglish, the actress speaks a multitude of languages Japanese, French, Korean, Mexican and Swahili

For an actress who could barely speak Hindi when she first joined the Hindi film industry, Sridevi has come a long way. In her comeback film English Vinglish, the actress is set to push the bar even further. She will talk in Japanese, Mexican, Swahili, Korean and French. While not much is being revealed about the extent to which she has spoken the languages, according to sources, the film has characters from France, Japan, Mexico, Africa and Korea and Sridevi is required to communicate with them in their languages.

Ironically, in the film, the actress plays a housewife in the US who speaks English with great difficulty. As reported earlier, Mehdi Nebbou who previously starred in Steven Speilberg's Munich will play the French character.

According to sources, Sridevi spent months perfecting her lines in different languages. Before shooting commenced in New York, the actress would reportedly spend time in the kitchen of her Mumbai house muttering the lines, taking the help of a voice recorder.

Director Gauri Shinde, whose husband R Balki made the hit Paa, had reportedly made it clear that the actress would have to learn the lines and make the scenes look authentic. The source said, "It wasn't easy for someone whose mother tongue is Tamil and couldn't speak a word of Hindi to do Solva Savan (Sridevi's first Hindi film). Sri mastered the language only after her first 8-9 films. To learn 5 languages for a film, takes some doing."

When contacted, Balki, who is also the producer of the film, said, "It's too early to specify the nationality and language of all the characters. But yes, Sri had to interact with people from various parts of the world. And she managed beautifully."

The shooting of the film has been completed, it has been revealed that Amitabh Bachchan also makes a special appearance in the film.

Food for Thought? Sridevi: The Comeback Queen

The comeback queen insists on bringing home-cooked food to the sets of her forthcoming film.

Pa director Balki has put on five kilos in the last 10 days, all thanks to Sridevi. The veteran actress has apparently been cooking delicious homemade food for the team of her comeback film, English Vinglish, directed by Balki's wife, Gauri Shinde.

"Sridevi insists on bringing the most delicious food to the sets. It started when Gauri fell ill after eating food from the studio, where we are shooting. That's when Sridevi decided that none of us would eat canteen food. We've shot for 10 days and she has brought the most divine food every day. Every day is a revelation," Balki said.

Sridevi even extended her hospitality to Amitabh Bachchan, when she shot with him last Monday. "Our canteen had served Rava Idli, but Big B chose to tuck into Sridevi's food," said Balki.

Bachchan is teaming up with his Khuda Gawah co-star after 19 years. "It's a cameo role for Mr Bachchan," said Balki. In it, Bachchan plays the role of an airplane passenger who meets Sridevi. Reports suggest that English Vinglish is a remake of the old Doordarshan serial Zabaan Sambhalke. Balki scoffed at the comparison, though.

"Sure, we bring back Sridevi after so many years and make her do a television serial on screen! Where does all this information come from?"

English Vinglish: More rumours and gossip swirl about Sridevi's comeback film

ROSHNI K OLIVERA, TNN |
Jul 17, 2011, 12.00am IST

Everyone's eager to know what Sridevi's comeback film is all about. Naturally, the actress who has done some remarkable work in films like Mr India, Chaalbaaz and Chandni, is bound to want to return to the big screen with a bang.

BT has just learnt that Sri's film, directed by R Balki's wife Gauri Shinde, is loosely based on the popular Zabaan Sambhalke TV show. Titled English Vinglish, it revolves around a middle-class Indian housewife with weak English, who becomes the butt of everyone's jokes. She has to go to America and thus begins her secret attempt to master the language. Eventually she succeeds, even giving a speech in perfect English much to everyone's amazement.

The film also focuses on other dysfunctional characters studying with her in the 'Learn English in 2 weeks' course. It's a fun-filled flick and Sri's comic timing is the icing on the cake, says a source. "There's this one scene where an American Consulate guy asks her 'You don't know English, how will you manage in our country?' and she replies, 'You don't know Hindi, but seem to be managing just fine in ours'!" the source adds.

Sridevi Refutes Report about Weight Gain: Fake News goes viral again

Sridevi refutes reports that she will put on weight for English Vinglish

Screen correspondent
Posted: Jun 17, 2011 at 1327 hrs IST

Sridevi, who will start shooting for her comeback film, English Vinglish on July 7 said that she is not required to put on any weight for her character. “I don’t know who has been saying this, because the director is fine with how I look right now,” said the actress who last faced the camera for her husband, Boney Kapoor’s Judaai 14 years ago.

The actress, who at one time, was to make her comeback with Kapoor’s sequel to Mr India, said that she is quite happy to be back with this film as her character is extremely interesting. It will also be the first time that she will be working with a woman director, Gauri Shinde, wife of director R Balki.

Fake it Till you Make it! The False Agenda by Illiterates: Fake news about Sridevi

WTF: What the Fiction?!

Here's the thing about Sridevi, even when there's no news, Sridevi makes news. As the abdicated queen of Bollywood, the grand empress of Indian cinema (not just in Hindi films but the regional films she conquered), Sridevi (née Aiyappan, now Kapoor), has been kept alive online and on cable TV, thanks to the proliferation of channels on the idiot-box and laptop loafers on the world wide web. Self included - to a certain extent! 😉

Thanks to the unverified, unfiltered web of fiction that's often concocted online to fill cyberspace, 'news' on Sridevi appears on suspect sites and blogs that somehow makes it on air via cable TV, reported by those desperate to fill air time with their air-head comments. Without an editor in sight or a fact-checker on site, type any damn thing online and see the bit of goss fly - j'accuse cable tv news in particular.

Over the past 20+ years, so much cyber-dust has collected with newsbytes on Sridevi, we've decided to keep this page alive and well  - and call out false reporters and reports that have found air-space courtesy of the over-active imaginations of those with a minor relationship with the truth. Let's not get a thing like 'fact' get in the way of a good news story.

The most popular Sridevi fiction over the past decade include:

  • News on Sridevi's comeback in a behemoth Tamil or Telugu film cast opposite either Rajnikant or Kamal Haasan. Or that Sridevi would appear in a Mani Ratnam film. Just google search and be amazed at what pops up. Fact is, Sridevi did some brilliant cinema with the two (and never worked with Mani!) superstars of the south. None of the news items on her comeback via the regional route are true, but that sure hasn't killed those pages.
  • Sridevi to appear on Koffee with Karan; as much as her fans would have loved to see K Jo blow air-kisses to his professed "favourite actress of all time", there wasn't even the slightest indication from the Devi camp (or camp Karan - no pun intended) that the erstwhile No:1 star (or as Stardust used to call her, No:1 superstarni) would shoot the breeze with the chatty man. No rapid-fire rounds, no coffee hampers for Sri, no comments on her rivalry between Madhuri, Rekha, Jaya Prada, Radha, Bhanupriya... etc etc.
  • News that Sridevi would appear in Shahrukh Khan's Om Shanti Om. Well, truth is, Sridevi was approached by Farah/Shah Rukh Khan to appear in the title song with the rest of the cavalcade of stars but according to Farha, Sridevi wanted to appear with Boney Kapoor but the Khans wanted her to appear with her frequent co-star Jeetendra. It was a deal-breaker so finally Tushar Kapoor appeared with his father Jeetendra instead. Pity. But for the longest time online, 'Sridevi's comeback with Shahrukh' made the loop on many a site.
  • News about Sridevi's eldest daughter Janhvi Kapoor staring in a Telugu film was pure fiction made up on some idiotic blog, but the news was carried on various news channels in the South and then the fake news went national! The funny thing is, Janhvi's debut in a South film made the ticker-tape when she was all of 10!!! True, Sridevi was already acting at that age way back when, but beta, times have changed. Child-labour laws for one. Sridevi didn't dignify the news with any comment but thank God Boney Kapoor quickly put an end to the rumour that his under-age daughter would be on-screen with... was it Najarjuna's son or Chiranjeevi's? One forgets. Mercifully.
  • Amitabh Bachchan would star opposite Sridevi in her comeback vehicle. Really? Big B eclipsed by Chandni? Thank God for twitter when Amitabh Bachchan himself shot the rumours down with a simple, yet highly efficient, denial. Trouble is, with Anil Kapoor being her brother-in-law, the current lot acting with model-turned-non-actresses, there really isn't a hero/actor worthy of Sridevi's caliber out there. Big B is scheduled to appear in Sridevi's comeback film English Vinglish, but only as a guest-star, not co-star.
  • Sridevi to appear in an English Vinglish sequel - No chance. The writer/director shot that rumour down almost immediately.
  • Sridevi to appear in Sadma's sequel - "preposterous" was Kamal Haasan's comeback.
  • Sridevi to appear in a film with Meryl Streep - a rumour fanned by that foolish fan... what's his name. We called bullshit almost immediately...
This bull s*** news!

-

  • The latest bit of pure fluff, Sridevi acting as Rekha (her predecessor and contemporary of sorts) in a Rekha bio-flick. When hell freezes over. This will not happen. Ever. Never.
  • Back in the early '90s there were rumours published in various film rags (oh those pre-internet days) that a 'desi' version of All About Eve with Rekha and Sridevi was being planned by Rahul Rawail. Never happened.
  • There was once news that Sridevi and Madhuri Dixit would act together in Saroj Khan's directorial debut. Also never happened Oh but one can dream! Imagine the dances! The costume wars! The jugulbandi! The reams of press on their cold war on set! Who would out-thumka the other?! What wicked fun!

Notoriously shy and wary of the press and media en masse, it sure as heck wasn't Sridevi blowing hot-air to the rumour mills so who fills reporters ears with so much gibberish?

Addendum

Just days after posting the above, more tidbits have hit the net and the idiot-box, a festival of fabricated sound and e-bytes. Its amusing for us as, there's more juice for our fake-news cocktail;

  • Sridevi to host a TV show. As much as we'd love to see Sridevi on a weekly if not daily basis, this is just wishful thinking at best. Sridevi has gently indicated how she didn't enjoy the rigmarole of a daily show - the overwhelming schedule of Malini Iyer that took her away from the great love of her life; her children.
  • Janhvi Kapoor to do a film under the baton of Mani Ratnam. This bit of forged and enforced news comes from some random BS site that was linked on the Sridevi fanclub on Facebook. Nope, not for love nor Mani, is Janhvi doing a film with the master direcctor... at the moment. She certainly has the looks and grace to be a star-of-the-future and has the blessings of erstwhile No:1 actress Vyjanthimala (who said at the Reddy wedding that Janhvi will be the next superstar), but for now, let the media leave Sridevi's first-born alone. See the denial of all the movie reports from a reliable source; Janhvi herself right here.
  • Sridevi's going to do a 'Sheila ki jawani' type 'item number' in her upcoming film. This from a Telugu news channel. Absurd. Sure, Sri was a dancing queen of the marquee but for a film like English Vinghlish, it does seem highly, highly unlikely that a middle-aged housewife will break into a jig while wrapped in pink satin bed-sheets. Though, mind you, if anyone can, Sridevi can. But it goes very much against the grain of the sensible script.
  • The 'news' on Boney's bankruptcy. If any journalist had done a very simple google search, all the alarm bells would have rung. This 'news' item has a familiar ring to it because back in 2005, there were similar stories of the supposed financial troubles the Kapoors. Film business is alarmingly like the stock market, there are plenty of ups and downs. The industry also runs on economic principle of 'opm'  (ie other people's money) and, to a certain extent, its like monopoly money... there's a lot of numbers floating up and down. We don't know how a movie's financed - God knows Mumbai's movie mavericks have made film financing a nebulous befuddlement to test every accountant. What goes on behind the scenes is a mystery and quite frankly, if anyone does try and explain it, it'll be a turgid read and about as much fun.
  • If Boney Kapoor has been hired by some company, then its a reason to celebrate the news as the Kapoors are probably rolling in corporate cash. Good for them. Sridevi and Co are fine and the Kapoors are certainly not starving on the streets of Mumbai. (If they can survive the debacle of Roop Ki Rani... they can survive anything.) I mean look at Boney Kapoor; does he look like a man who has ever missed a meal a day in his life? We wish the Kapoors continued success and they are probably ignoring this persistent - and loud - news.
  • PS: If Sridevi's really spending 25-lakhs a month on herself, then its the best value for money at any exchange rate - 'cause she still looks like a million bucks!
  • Sridevi to star as an alien queen in an upcoming sci-fi flick. Not even worth mentioning on this blog but some duffer has posted this on imbd.com and there isn't a modicum of truth to it.
  • Sridevi to appear in an 'item song' for Ajith's film in response to his special appearance in Anglam Vanglam (the Tamil version of English Vinglish). As Sridevi has said often, she has no interest in doing either non-consequential roles nor item songs. Again, fetid tweeters went a little cray-cray with this one!
  • Sridevi to star in R Balki's upcoming film with Amitabh Bachchan and Shahrukh Khan. The mere thought of it makes the collective billions of fans salivate - yet this technicolour dream will not be satiated. Balki, SRK and Bachchan Snr have denied this rumour. Thank God for Twitter - at least these baseless hoodwinked reports can be snuffed out almost immediately.
