A Queen arrives at an Ambani Party: Sridevi wearing a glittering Manish Malhotra ensemble

A TBT pic in this Ambani wedding melee that just ended this past week, a reminder of the times when Sridevi attended Ambani events with such grace, royal aura and ethereal beauty. These photos are from back in 2012, when the Ambanis hosted a soiree for Harbhajan and Rohit around Dec 15, 2012. Fresh off the dazzling success of English Vinglish, a film loved by the Ambanis, Sridevi was a mainstay in their invite-list.

Sridevi posed with "her best friend in the industry" and designer of her ensemble that night, Manish Malhotra and husband Boney Kapoor.

A big shout out to High Heel Confidential, that has helped with information, dates and context.

Sridevi's Lamhe with Yash Chopra: Actress talks about working with the director in films

Stardust, Dec 2012. A tribute to Yash Chopra by Sridevi for Stardust.

Great memories of the director and his favourite muse, actress Sridevi. Such a rare feature to  have just Sridevi speak uninterrupted. Great insights into their working relationship.

Excerpts:

Sridevi's Lamhe with Yash Chopra

Sridevi, "People always thought that he was serious and strict as a person, but he was like a child. I was totally amazed by his energy levels.

For the first time in my career, I worked with a director who gave as much importance to the looks and the costumes of his heroine as the script and the screenplay. Bhanu Athaiyya was the costume designer for Chandni and those days, I used to do about five to six shifts a day and after all that, I used to sit with Bhanuji and Yashji to finalize my costumes for every scene. Every day, they would come and discuss about the detailing of something as simple as a salwar-kameez and I used to feel why he is giving so much importance to salwar-kameez. It was only later that I understood why he was so particular about the costumes and my look in every scene of the film. Today, when any girl wears a white salwar-kameez, she gets compared to my look from Chandni.

Everybody loved him so much that nobody could say no to him. I remember while shooting for Lamhe, for even the smallest scene, he would make me wear so many different costumes till he got the right look. I had tried over 50 costumes on one day that was dedicated only for finalizing the costumes and the looks. He would sit with the photographer; ask him to take my picture in a costume and say, "Yeh look air yeh dress hum is particular scene main use karenge." For every scene, the costume would get finalized and tagged. Costumes were always pre-decided so that no time would be wasted once the shooting was on. For example, if scene number 57 was to be shot, the costume for that would be ready in advance with the tag of no. 57 on it. So the assistant would just have to go and get that dress. He was an absolute perfectionist.

People ask me if I miss him more as a filmmaker or as a person. I miss him more as a person simply because it's very rare to come across a person with such great a combination. He was full of love and affection. He used to enjoy watching good movies and wouldn't hesitate to praise people for their good work."

Sridevi on her only female director Gauri Shinde: ‘I will be upset with Gauri if she makes her next without me...’

Superstar Sridevi, the iconic Indian actress, on her comeback to Bollywood with English Vinglish and she reveals her plans for the future.

After a 15 year  break from films Sridevi made a comeback with English Vinglish and she plans to stay here now. Her film is now going to rake in the moollah on the small screen by making the world premiere on Zee Network.

“I am very happy about my film ‘English Vinglish’ being aired on Zee. The changes brought in the FilmSpot are surprising. After the stupendous success of ‘EV’ now the film is set to premiere worldwide. This makes me feel excited. My husband has liked the movie. He is the same, his attitude has not changed and he is an emotional person, his love and respect for a woman has always ranked high. But with this film I am a sure husbands, who thought differently about their wives, their attitude has changed a lot. As so many friends and kids have come and expressed their positive views about a mother like me on reel.”

She goes on to add, “We are looking forward to remake ‘Mr India’ but ‘No Entry’ will come first. I am happy that Anil Kapoor praises about my acting. These praiseworthy words coming from a sincere, dedicated and a meticulous actor like him makes me feel great. If the script permits a role for both of us, why not? I will like to work with him. At the moment everything is on the scripting level, so nothing can be confirmed.”

Enjoying her free time she says, “There are so many things for me to do during my leisure hours. Being a mother, a wife and daughter-in law I have various duties to fulfill. I do not chalk out as to what I have to do while I am free for a while I sometime spend time with my kids and we discuss so many things. I also like to take my daughters along with me. We share a very good rapport. Now, since my film ‘English Vinglish’ has released I take them with me on the events too but this does not mean that I am promoting her. She has a long life ahead of her and right now she is busy completing her studies. Also while I am free I like to read books.”

She says, "I am looking forward to a happening 2013. Now, since I have made it up onto the celluloid after a gap of 15 years I am very happy. It took me to make up my mind to be able to work again on the silver screen. I am looking forward to work in South as well as Hindi films. How can I not opt for Southern film as I started my career from the South?

Given a chance I will strike a balance doing both Hindi and South films. There will be no clash, as I am not going to take up many films .I will surely strike a balance between both Hindi as well as South films.

Holding her breath for a while she says, “I will be 100 per cent jealous if Gauri Shinde does her next film with any other heroine. I will not allow her to do a film without me.”

“I am going to spend the New Year holidays with my family and kids. I will be going to the South for some time. I am always there in Hyderabad and Tamil Nadu most of my holidays so this time since my film English Vinglish is premiering on Zee television we will all watch the film on our television set. My cooks will also watch the film along with me,” adds Sridevi.

I definitely want to do more films : Sridevi life after success: English Vinglish declared a hit

Sridevi's performance in English Vinglish was praised highly and the film enjoyed a successful run at the box office. The actress is promoting the film all over again for its television premiere on Zee Cinema on December 29.

She has shot three customised promos only for the small screen. The channel has also launched a portal to teach housewives English, in keeping with the theme of the film.

Sridevi can only hope that all the excitement that greeted the film continues with television audiences.

"Since the release, something or the other exciting is happening. Hope the excitement continues. The families, who were not able to get out and watch the film, will be able to watch it on TV," she says.

And whether any one else watches or not "my husband (Boney Kapoor) is definitely going to watch it," she smiles.

She says she watches films with her family in the theatre, "but I like to watch good films again on television like Taare Zameen Par, Wanted, 3 idiots and No Entry."

The film she enjoyed watching the most recently is Life of Pi -- "It's fantastic!"

The hugely successful actress had not acted in a film for 15 years before making a comeback with English Vinglish.

What warmed her heart the most among all the praise she received was that after the English Vinglish premiere at the Toronto Film Festival "we received a standing ovation."

The film has had a salutary effect. "Some men have said that they have changed their behaviour towards their wives. Some mothers and wives have come up to me and said their husband's attitude and children's behaviour has changed. So all thanks to the film," she says smiling.

Kareena Kapoor had said, without any hesitation, that the Filmfare Best Actress award should be given to Sridevi for her work in English Vinglish.

"I really want to thank her," Sridevi gushes. "It was really sweet of her to say such nice things. I adore all of them from Katrina Kaif to Priyanka Chopra to Deepika Padukone. Vidya Balan is superb. Kareena is beautiful and a natural actress. I loved her item number Fevicol Se in Dabbang 2."

Ask her to list her best five Hindi films and she names Mr India, Sadma, Chalbaaz, Lamhe and English Vinglish.

Would she judge a reality show on television? "Not that I don't get any offers, but it hasn't worked out. It's very difficult for me to tell someone that his/her performance is not great, especially when they have put in so much hard work. I don't think I can do justice being a judge on the show."

So what kind of work is she expecting in the New Year? "I don't plan things, I didn't know that I would be doing English Vinglish, it just happened. "If I get some exciting offers, I will definitely want to do more films. But this time it will not be after a gap of 15 years!" she says.
