Sridevi and Rishi Kapoor in Kaun Sachcha Kaun Jhootha (1997)

Sridevi, Rishi Kapoor and Suresh Oberoi in the murder mystery Kaun Sachcha Kaun Jhootha (1997).

Directed by director Partho Ghosh, the movie was a modest success. Made under a budget of less than 4 crore, it made more than 10 crore - more than double its investment.

But the low-key slow growth in the box-office meant that people initially wrote it off as a flop initially - and the stigma stuck. It wasn't in fact a flop - the film recovered costs for producer Rakesh Roshan.

Hrithik Roshan's father employed Sridevi as an actress in several films as he famously said, unlike her contemporaries, Sridevi was a "thorough professional, always on time, always ready to shoot on the dot."  Which could not be said of the other actresses he hired who were either her contemporaries or successors.

Roshan senior has famously taken shots at Rekha and Madhuri Dixit - for those who have the explosive Showtime cover story when the journalist found Rakesh Roshan in a mood and the director let the industry have it! He took names, listed who had been unprofessional and difficult to work with and he called a spade a spade! Sridevi was spared! He had nothing bad to say about her.

  1. Don't at all rem that such a movie ever came. Surprising since I had seen all her movies in Hindi & Tamil

  2. Well, clearly you haven't seen "all" her Hindi films. Pick it up - its a good murder mystery and Sridevi is sensational. As always.

  3. She's great in the movie especially the courtroom and jail scenes and not to forget her cute expressions in the song "Chanchal Hawaon se".
