16 September, 1950 - 13 September, 2011
One of my favourite photographers, my favourite Bollywood personality, one of my favourite people in the world breathed his last early this morning. Gautam Rajadhyaksha was a kind and lovely person, wonderful beyond belief - which is exactly how news of his passing has been met with; beyond belief.
Numb with shock and sadness. Deeply grateful to have known him, spoken to him and having interviewed him for a feature. Also deeply grateful at his seemingly endless generosity and kindness which he bestowed upon me, especially with his words and work.
This blog is littered with his work, his portraits of Sridevi, his prose on Sridevi. He was so generous with praise and supportive of this exercise in self-indulgence and idol worship of Sri! He was amused by it... or perhaps bemused, either way, aware and appreciative.
Gautamji was masterful in everything he attempted; he wrote so beautifully and his pictures were so beautiful. In the field of film journalism, there was no one like him, none with the perspicacity and acute, astute, alacrity.
I know of many great photographers. I know of many great writers. But none who could do both in an equal measure of brilliance.
The arch lights fade, but your memory and work will live on forever.
RIP Gautam Rajadhyaksha. RIP. So deeply grateful Shobhaa De introduced us and you illuminated my world with your inner light and brilliance.
