Released on May 25, 1987, this is Mr India's 30th anniversary. The favourite film of so many Bollywood fans, it is a classic that has aged remarkably well. The special effects seem simplistic, yet the emotional core, the characters, the music, the performances, the narrative have all stood the test of time. Its... faultless. Its so much fun. Its got just the best of Indian cinema involved; a great leading actor, a strong supporting cast (be it any child actor or the incredible villain on screen, Amrish Puri) an Oscar-nominated director and... the uncrowned (well, crowned in this case - her golden tiara in Hawa Hawaii!!) queen of Indian cinema; Sridevi.
Online, we found these rarely seen pics of what happened behind the scenes of making this magical film - for which we are grateful. How amazing to see Saroj Khan choreograph every single number in the film, not just the memorable Hawa Hawaii. The easy camaraderie between the main protagonists and the oh-so-cool director Shekhar Kapoor. And, the not-so-secret admirer of Sri at the time, film producer Boney Kapoor.
Vidya Balan said that Sridevi is an institution in acting while watching this movie; not the gravely serious art films that came out in the 1980s. To make the implausible plausible, Sridevi perfected her performance no matter what the scene or scenario. For those who don't remember, Sri was given a tag as a sexy, glamorous commercial actress and back then, there was scant praise for her acting - the awards came much later. But even in the most inane 80s flicks, she stood out and became the legend that she is.
