Sridevi in and as Nagina: Media goes into overdrive with new titles for India's Box Office Queen

Sridevi in and as Nagina (1986)

A turning point in her illustrious career, Sridevi was already considered a top actress of her time, but the box-office success - and that finale number - catapulted Sridevi to a league of her own.

The press went into overdrive describing Sridevi's power and position in Bollywood; that was the time the media went hyperbolic with titles such as The Last Empress, The Queen of Cinema and of course, the now frowned upon expression, "The female Amitabh Bachchan!".

Simpler times...

BTW news to us; Nagina's success inspired the film's producer and director Harmesh Malhotra to make not one but two sequels; Malhotra planned Nagina, followed by Nigahein and concluding it with Naghme. Sadly the poor fate of the first sequel Nigahein snuffed out plans for the hat trick.

Left: Sridevi on the cover of Hindi film mag Movie Jagat (Movie place!), with the pull quote  "I have many reasons to be happy!"
