A round up of the Bombay film scene in 1992.
Excerpt:
"There is simply not enough allure and mystery - be it Hema Malini, Rekha, Sridevi or Madhuri Dixit. Of them, Sridevi came closest to appropriating the mystique that attached to her male counterparts. She dominated the scenes in Mr. India, Chandni and Chaalbaaz. Her roles in Mr India and Chaalbaaz were different in concept."
Found this paragraph interesting - esp considering how many double roles Sridevi ended up doing in her lifetime - more than any other actress of her - or any other time. How Sri ensured her legacy was established early on by dominating the films she featured in.
"Heroes are simply the more endurable icons. Given the prevalence of the father-figure in all other spheres, to young women viewers even the aging romantic hero is not jarring. In double and triple roles heroes, will therefore continue to outlast the heroines. And if there are fewer male cult figures, they will still outnumber the women."
