Celebrity designer Manish Malhotra, "Then he [photographer Rakesh Shreshta] introduced me to Sridevi, who became my first major star-client. I was thrilled that she had actually agreed to let a total newcomer design her outfits! On hindsight, I am glad that I started off with a star like Sridevi six years ago, because she is one hell of a person to work with. She gave me the importance that I deserved and helped me build my confidence. I am the sort of person who loves to know that I am wanted by the other person. And Sridevi knew exactly how to relate with me.
Sridevi was the perfect grounding experience for me. She is one actress who knows the significance of a complete look in a film. Though I was a newcomer at that time, she gave me the opportunity to showcase my talent. What I like about her is her single minded dedication to the job on hand. I remember, once, I was discussing her costume on the sets, and one of her producers walked into her make-up room. Sridevi told him gently, but firmly, that she could see him after half-an-hour, only after her meeting with me over the costumes was over. I was really impressed with her that day.
But then Sridevi has always given a lot of importance to her screen costumes. She's one of the few heroines for whom I've flown to London with, and to Madras and Hyderabad, because she's so particular about her looks on screen. I'll really miss her, considering she'll be away from films to give her full attention to her new-born baby.
Yes, Sridevi broke the news of her pregnancy to me. It was done in a very dignified manner. She asked me to tailor some pregnancy outfits for her, that's how. Of course, I am happy for her. But as I said earlier, I'll really miss her.
