Sridevi's finest performance, bar none, hit the screens when she was 19

Sridevi's finest performance, bar none, hit the screens when she was just 19. Moondram Pirai released 42 years ago today, cementing Sridevi's status as an actor par excellence.

The remake, Sadma, was not a blockbuster as the Tamil original was. And Sridevi herself was a fan of the original far more than its Hindi remake-albeit being a gorgeously done re-telling. As she herself said, the spark of the original was missing in the remake--and she wasn't a fan of doing remakes even though she did many... (we are working on that listicle too!).

What can I say about Moondram Pirai that hasn't been said before?

Watch it once every decade in your life to find a nuance and meaning that you might have missed before.

PS: Off tangent; a lot of fans defending the youngsters of The Archies for their less-than stellar performance have stated 'Oh but they are so young, give them time to learn and grow...' There are innumerable stars who were good, if not great, from the word go. Waheeda Rehman, Sridevi, Rekha, Shobhana, Kamal Haasan, Hrithik Roshan et al started as teenagers and gave astounding performances. The less-than-mediocre performances is indefensible, especially when the cast and crew went tom-toming around town about how they were given a year to prepare! A YEAR! Good lord...
