The photo finish... well, Sridevi rose to the top as a Number One star. Jaya Prada did well... but was never considered a box-office draw.

Two girls in a photo-finish
With Jeetendra cheering Sridevi to stardom and Rajesh Khanna holding aloft the Jaya Prada banner, the South never had it so good.
She is tall, slim and vivacious. Down South she did all those glamour roles with as much ease as she did the in-depth characters. So, what if the reception of her maiden Hindi movie, Solva Saawan, was lukewarm, she did not let it cramp her style. She bided her time, learnt Hindi and waited to conquer.
Today, Sridevi is sitting pretty with a bagful of films co-starring almost all the top heroes in Bombay. What made this possible was the success of Himmatwala, followed by Justice Chowdhury and Sadma. Films that left no one in doubt that she had been accepted into 'the fold'.
