Nutan with Sridevi: Remembering Nutan on her birth anniversary: The Sridevi - Nutan Listicle!

Nutan with Sridevi, backstage of a show.

Remembering Nutan today on her birth anniversary, the great Indian actress was born on 4 June 1936 in Bombay.

The legend worked with iconic Sridevi in four films;

  1. Karma (1986)
  2. Sone pe Suhaaga (1988)
  3. Guru (1989)
  4. Garajna (1991) unreleased
All the released films were huge hits. In time, Sridevi went on to work with Nutan's son in the 90s, Mohnish Behl, in four films too (Chandra Mukhi, Laadla, Army and Kaun Sachcha Kaun Jhootha).

In the (pointless) opinion polls that crop up every year, there are a few names that top the list of Best Actress - any time I see the absence of Nutan, I think, ah, a cine-illiterate young audience clicked on the polls. Her filmography, particularly her award-winning and highly acclaimed performances (see below), are staggering. It wasn't Meena, Nargis or Madhubala, but Nutan who had a record collection of Best Actress trophies.

Sridevi and Nutan, two iconic actresses of Indian cinema, collaborated in four Hindi films, primarily in the late 1980s. They shared the screen in three released films, with one additional unreleased/shelved project that's in the vault somewhere!

  1. Karma (1986)
    Directed by Subhash Ghai, this blockbuster action thriller was the top-grossing Indian film of 1986. It featured an ensemble cast including Dilip Kumar, Nutan (in a key role), Jackie Shroff, Anil Kapoor, Naseeruddin Shah, Sridevi, and others. Nutan played a significant supporting/motherly role opposite Dilip Kumar. Sridevi was the leading lady with co-star Jackie Shroff.
  2. Sone Pe Suhaaga (1988)
    Directed by K. Bapaiah, this multi-starrer action-drama/family film included Dharmendra, Jeetendra, Anil Kapoor, Poonam Dhillon, Sridevi (as Meena), Nutan (as Usha), Kimi Katkar, Nirupa Roy, Kader Khan, and more. It was a commercial success with a large ensemble all-star cast of major names of the Bollywood marquee.
  3. Guru (1989)
    Directed by Umesh Mehra, this action-drama starred Mithun Chakraborty (in the title role as a cop), Sridevi (in a double role as Rama/Uma), Nutan (as Yashoda Shrivastav), and Shakti Kapoor. It was a superhit and one of the notable collaborations between Mithun and Sridevi.
Additionally, a fourth project: Garajna was planned for release back in 1991, but the film was lost in court battles and eventually shelved. The movie featured Sridevi, Vinod Khanna, Rishi Kapoor, Nutan, and others.
