Sridevi wasn't nominated that year as the contenders for the trophy were; Madhuri Dixit (Dil), Hema Malini (Rihaee), Juhi Chawla (Pratibandh) and the always overlooked (yet again here!), Meenakshi Sheshadri (Jurm).
Hmm... Not a strong year... Hema Malini should have won for the complex Rihaee, but to hand an award to an icon whose star was fading, box-office clout was non-existent, plus she was on the wrong side of 20... even she knew she wasn't going to win. But lets hand it to the stars of that decade that all the nominees turn up for the show even when they know [all winners are secretly told in advance so they turn up on stage!] they aren't winning... unlike today!
As its the popular award and there was no bigger hit than Dil, Madhuri Dixit had to walk away with the Best Actress trophy.
Sridevi booked ended these years - she won for Chandni (1989) and won again for Lamhe (1991!). Once an icon, always an icon.
She should have won again for English Vinglish, Mom, Nagina, Mr.India... well, it's a long list.
